OMG - such different cars - sooo satisfying but completely different…

Just drove my 911 GT3 first time in while - OMG that car is loud aggressive brutal and so tight (in a good way) - 9k red line - PDK upshifts are a delight! But OMG do you hear the road noise and it’s always making noise - sometimes satsifying sometimes not so much - low seating position - quick steering - good throttle response if you are in the rev-range…

Park the GT3 get into the Taycan

hmmmmmm this is a relaxing SPA treatment that does 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds - quiet ride, smooth ride, lots of space (vs. GT3) - so quick so responsive - so big - but OMG satisfying in a way that is fundementially different than the GT3…

both are awesome cars - one can not replace the other - and I wouldn’t want them to - if I had to pick one the Taycan wins because of it’s great comfort, space, and less brutal environment - but it’s not because the GT3 is “lesser” - it’s just more in some ways that make it more specialized and more of an aquired taste (especially for the spouses)…

but there is only one of these I’ll take the track - and it’s not the Taycan - the GT3 is hands down better for that use case.

Nice take on the two cars; I can definitely relate. Unfortunately for me, due to issues relating to available garage space and other practical reasons I had to give up my '14 GT3 to acquire the Taycan. While I miss some things about the GT3, not least that glorious run through the gears to 9K, I'm very happy with the exchange and so is my wife!

Really enjoyed this post. I'm in the midst of a car-identify crisis and this resonates.

I think a lot of it depends on your non-track use and what that drive is like. For years I enjoyed driving a 2005 330i stick, and then went to a DCT M3 for my work commute which was way faster but not nearly as fun. So then a manual 911, thinking it fun was all about the car... and came to realize that it's not. My commute is all behind a wall of Priuses and rock trucks going 55 and not letting folks go by, so it didn't matter how much torq/HP I have nor what my engine sounded like.

So in my identify crisis I'm letting go of the 911 (young twins, no time for club drives or track) and trading in for a Taycan. At least it would retain some fun and yet be more suitable as a DD... and maybe cost less to maintain if I keep it a long time...

And maybe eventually I'll get a manual ICE "fun car" that's a stripper E36 or S2000. After all, I'll have a ton of track fun in those cars without needing the capabilities of a 911 at my novice driving level.

In this crushing identity crises you must find professional help while waiting for your Taycan. But rest assured, once you drive your new baby off the lot, the world makes total sense again! :giggle:

the GT3 was spectacular today - perfect (and I mean perfect) monterey early summer weather today - laps were done - 101 octane fuel was burned - passing occurred - the GT3 behaved like the champ we all know it is…sound limit was 90 db - I have dundon quiet muffler with laguna turn-aways - I can make 92 db but not 90 db with out short shifting between turns 5 & 6 - so no improvement on lap time today - but there was also a lot of traffic - impessive turn out of vehicles - wide range - it was 100% automotive candy store today to wander around the paddock…

but driving the GT3 home after a long day at the track I would’ve really preferred the Taycan - I was tired, the GT3 was loud and a bit bouncy due to the track stiffened (factory stock) suspension - some congestion on Hwy 1 north - and no adaptive cruise control or land keeping made me wish I was in my taycan - I could’ve also used some massage seats vs. the hard shelled sports bucket seats (which are great for the 6 point harness when on track)

both cars are super fun - but the Taycan is more useful for a wider range of activities - and ONLY falls down for track duty as it’s only weakness - the GT3 does the track way better than virtually any other street vehicle bar none - but lacks a universal roundness and a lot of creature comforts I appreciate in a more sedate vehicle - Taycan’s EV instant torque is a match for the GT3’s power and acceleration - and it’s low center of gravity covers a lot of sins…
  • the Taycan wins as a more suitable vehicle for a wider range of use cases…greater comfort and stellar performance
  • the GT3 wins as probably one of the best examples of 2 door sports car that also excels in actual and repeated track use…it’s a highly evolved product (100’s of years of ICE tech combined with relentless iteration by Porsche from the 911 product line) - but it’s purposely designed to be “less comfortable” so that it can excel in a low use case but extremely demanding track enviroment while not entirely sucking for normal street use.
neither vehicle will disappoint you - but both have their strengths and weaknesses - and there are use cases that both vehicles will excel at - and use cases that one or the other vehicle will completely fail…

the GT3 is a perfect track weapon and weekend sports car - every other use case is a compromise…
the Taycan is really really good at a wider variety of use cases (but I consider it fail at track use despite porsche marketing assertions - the Taycan can do a good lap - but not many good laps - keep trying guys)

if I had to keep one and get rid of the other - the Taycan is the keeper - cause track use is a low % use case and I need a car to be more functional more often in a wider range of circumstances, and the Taycan is still uber fun with all it’s instant EV’ness, tech, and low CG and 4 door’ness w/truck & frunk…

the GT3 is a rare bird - please stop trying to compare the Taycan to 911 sports car - they are whole different beasts…both however are wicked fun.

Another point that I’d propose — if used as a daily driver, after several years perhaps the Taycan will be more reliable and lower cost of ownership than a 911, assuming it acts like other EVs that is relatively static except for battery degradation.

Assuming of course all the early first gen bugs get resolved.

and maybe cost less to maintain if I keep it a long time...
no maybe about it…EV’s cost less to maintain…and the porsche website confirms it…

just look at the Porsche Scheduled Maintenance plans and the lack of any schedule maintenance in the Taycan’s service plan. EV’s quite simply don’t need maintaining.

tires and repairs for things that break - EV’s are maintenance free not repair free…

but there is no maybe about it.
