This was a really bad charger and my first negative EA experience.
The first 350kW I tried would only dispense at 67kW.
The second 350kW gave me 100kW but still frustrating.

I bailed on it and moved on to Grants, NM which the charging planner figured out for me.

This was not part of my original plan but the car called this audible for me after ABQ sucked.
This was my first charge in the rain, too!

Great charger worked immediately with full speed. No picture on this one.

Wow either you’re flying or it’s one heck of a head wind!
Why not both? ;)

I wonder what the trade off of speed vs charge time is. In my wife’s car, I observed that 55 MPH consumed 2/3 what 75 did. There’s a well-documented relationship between speed and power consumption*, but anyone know if there is a study on that relative to additional charge stops/time?

* One example:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/07/15/tesla-range-plotted-relative-to-speed-temperature-graphs/

or:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_drag_coefficient where it is stated “Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed; therefore it becomes critically important at higher speeds.”

This was a "bonus stop"

The destination chargers at my hotel were very tiny cramped spots - not Porsche safe - so I ended up going to EA Flagstaff to charge before bed.

This station was a complete shitshow.

2 pumps down completely showing unavailable.

One pump down stuck on a loading screen.

Porsche Taycan Road Trip Report - Texas to California Round Trip IMG_0051

The only pump that worked was a 150kW, and the parking curb for just that one charger was so far out the short cable would not reach my car!

I had to straddle the spot - at least all the chargers were dead so I wasn't blocking anyone.

Porsche Taycan Road Trip Report - Texas to California Round Trip 67730884677__04743C78-ACCC-4EB3-9372-BFBF1BE2F6E6

I finally made it to the hotel after something like 18 hours on the road, exhausted.

I have photos and details about all the stops but I'm not going to try and deal with them tonight.

Will probably shore all of it up after the drive.

It could very well be both. I bet the trade off is in favor of reduced speed. I haven’t taken a trip yet but planned to use range mode @ 80 mph. Of course that could change if/when I repeatedly get passed up by Civics, Corollas, and school buses.

Was looking around for any prior stuff on the interwebs on the topic and came across this Reddit thread:

Basically, their philosophy is more about optimizing for a 2.5 hour charging cadence rather than total trip time. The trip delta isn't typically significant and it's less taxing than multi-hour legs.

To be good at optimizing you need to take the same route and use the same stations multiple times (and recently). Plugshare can help with that, but hopefully that data is accurate and up-to-date.

Not sure if this works for you, but I usually stay at the Residence Inn in downtown Flagstaff. About a block away is the City of Flagstaff building and it has two level two Chargepoint chargers that are free curtesy of the City of Flagstaff. I have a good friend in 'Flag and that has been my routine for years - stay at that hotel, then let the car charge slowly overnight. The lot is safe because it is right next to the City building and has security.
