There's nothing practical about a dream car.

That being said, I'm a father of two. I ordered the sedan.

They both fit in the back without bumping their heads. I tried the back myself and I'm comfortable. I actually have more leg room then in a C-class Mercedes.

Go for the sedan

PS: my wife fully supported the idea. "It's your midlife crisis, go fully in"
Similar situation… two teenagers who are on the taller side. Initially struggled with moving away from the practicality of two larger vehicles at home… but after talking with my wife, she didn’t hesitate to support my sports sedan desire.

Go for the sedan… figure out the rest later. That’s my vote! ?

Personal taste is personal taste. I prefer the ST style, though. The ST side profile and back part is "beefier", and I like that. And it is more practical as well.

All these replies are great - thank you ! And at least give the impression that it is not uncommon to be of two minds of this - as they are going 50 / 50 :)

Any reflections on the options/ color/ wheels ?

I struggled with this myself and got the Turbo Sedan. In the winter, I like to ski in VT and was in a snowstorm last month wherer I wished I had greater clearance. And it's a bit tight getting my skis and stuff in the trunk with the seats down. BUT. Every time I approach the car I absolutely love how it looks. Absolutely no regrets here.

I don't mean to play Cpt Obvious, but a Taycan is not a 911, so if you dreamed about the latter, you won't find it in the former. Are you looking to go electric, or what prompted the search for a new car? (No need to answer, I'm just hinting at a decision algorithm.) If propulsion is not a factor, then what is - the utility, the aesthetics, other (mystique, obsession etc. - no judgment, it's perfectly normal)? If utility, then how much do you need? Pay for that - and not more (and definitely not for what we're saying here).

I went through your same dilemma. I preferred the looks of the sedan and preferred the practically of the CT. In the end, the practically won out. When I finally received my CT 4S I was stunned at how much better it looked 'in the wild.' Just today I saw the same exterior spec in the sedan and I think the CT looks better.
With the chalk and the long black glass roof you'll have great contrast.

Well the algorithm is basically tax... :( Difference in owning a full electrics vs ICE is massive where I live... My wife has a Tesla, I really am not a fan of the build quality as well as driving behavior ...

I went for a CT and painted the wheel arches. The ST wasn’t annonced when I ordered. The trunk is more practical and the 2cm extra clearance too in my case. I would choose the CT again but I also prefer the look of the CT / ST.

I had an x5 45e before that. And space was less anyway. I bought a roof box for the holidays. I would choose a pano roof on what ever model you chose to have to possibility to put on roof box when extra space is needed.

Before ordering I first had the plan to rent a diesel stationwagon (5 - E A6) for the holidays but apprently those are really hard to find because of shortage on the market and crazy expensive to rent for a week.

Many years ago one of my old colleagues had a 5-series estate as his company car. He was a keen hiker and mountain biker and when the X5 came out he asked for one.

He was super disappointed.
He said it was an "inverse Tardis" and he could get less in it than the 5-series estate because of bulky wheelarches. It was slower, handled much worse and used far more fuel.

As soon as he could he went back to a 5-series estate and never considered an X5 again.
BMW, who supplied the cars, were surprised since the X5 was a super popular model - further evidence vehicles are very much a fashion item for many people I think.

I had a 525 d rwd and a 530d xdrive touring before the X5 . Great cars. Really fun to drive and practical in use. Tbh nicer to drive than the X5.

I don‘t understand the appeal of station wagons, but i see they’re popular in Europe. Does anyone make a fake woodgrain kit for a Taycan yet? ;)

Every day of the week I'd take an estate over an SUV. Drive like a car, decent centre of gravity, loads of room and boot space and (despite the picture), they look great. Gotta love a wagon. personally I think the ST/CT just looks awesome. Those hips don't lie ;)
