  1. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

All. Try driving a 4S out here in the desert Southwest in June, July, August, and sometimes September when it is 105-115F on I-8 and I-10 at 80-85 mph, the speed of the traffic and semi's. I did, and for a ranges of 100% down to 10%, and 80% down to 10% I calculated from the kWh/100 mile...
  2. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

feye, We tried ECO mode for a very short time. It's not what we could comfortably stand, when it was 115F. Also, the Taycan 4S we drove had the panoramic glass roof which despite its "insulation" was hot to the touch. We normally set the A/C at 74F. On the trip to Dateland, we had a rear seat...
  3. A Taycan 4S is only as good as its charging infrastructure, & it isn't good!

Kort, I see by your zip code you are from the east coast of Florida. So I would not be surprised by your getting 220 on a 100% SOC. And yes I actually put my story in three threads. The ColoradoKid said I should try to put it into something other than the EA response to the "sucks" comments in...
  4. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

You are correct. Lithium ion batteries like it warm, circa 83F to charge. They can discharge at up to 131F (55C). Folks who run track in their Taycans found out that at 132F the Taycan lowers the performance of the car until the battery cools down.
  5. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

As long as you don't need to run the A/C all the time and not at ECO, and don't need to cool the battery at the same time, and not drive in the mountains, you can get the range you mention. It is a desert here...means it does get hot AND there aren't a lot of human habitations along our...
  6. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

Probably the same effect. The battery temperature management system has to heat the battery to 85F when its below 50F just as the system has to run the battery heat pump to cool the battery when it is over 95F. During one charging at a Electrify America station here in Tucson, when it was only...
  7. A Taycan 4S is only as good as its charging infrastructure, & it isn't good!

Here's the results of driving a 2021 Taycan 4S with the 21" Mission e wheels and the 93.4 kWh Performance Plus Battery (83.7 kWh usable) here in the desert Southwest when it is 105-115F on I-8 and I-10 west of Tucson and Phoenix. This is both a driving range and charging infrastructure story...
  8. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

Ok. It is time to report on the results of driving a 2021 Taycan 4S with the 21" Mission e wheels and the 93.4 kWh Performance Plus Battery (83.7 kWh usable) here in the desert Southwest. This is both a driving range and charging infrastructure story. Both are critical to "enjoying" driving...
  9. Received an Interesting Call from Electrify America

How timely your thread is! I have just completed a week long 1300 mile documented test drive of a 2021 Taycan 4S with the Performance Battery Plus option (aka 93.4 kWh battery) and 21 inch Mission E Design wheels, plus 28 other options. I rented the Taycan 4S using the Porsche Drive Rental...
  10. Taycan 4S gets 323 mile real world range in Edmunds EV range test!

I know you all enjoy beating the EPA estimates in a Taycan; however, I have yet to see anyone taking on a long trip here in the desert Southwest when it gets to be 105F-115F (41C-46C) as it does in June, July, August & even early September. This is particularly hazardous when driving along our...
  11. Taycan 4S Range in Southwest Summer

Actually, EA now has 2 ea 350 kW and 5 ea 150 kW charging stations in Needles CA. The new 2021 Taycan with the 93.4 kWh battery should be able to comfortably do better than the 2021 Taycan 4S and its 227 EPA estimate. The combination makes it possible to drive from Tucson to Las Vegas via EA...
  12. Indio, CA to Buckeye, AZ -- 219 miles. Charging speeds at Electrify American charger in Buckeye

ColoradoKid. I hope you are correct in that the charging infrastructure will change in the year to come. I don't have the same optimistic view when it comes to driving and charging EVs here when its 105F-115F. :-( Just to let you know I have been researching the issue of Taycan range...
  13. Indio, CA to Buckeye, AZ -- 219 miles. Charging speeds at Electrify American charger in Buckeye

ColoradoKid. Thanks for getting back with me. I envy your ability to do long trips. I too had motorcycles here in Tucson...a Harley Streetglide (FLHX), and a Suzuki M50. Sold them to buy my first 911 in 2013 and then sold it to get the 991.2 911 in 2017. Was looking to buy a Taycan 4S but alas...
  14. Indio, CA to Buckeye, AZ -- 219 miles. Charging speeds at Electrify American charger in Buckeye

Funny you should have driven this particular route. Last July I wrote an article for my local PCA chapter on how the range of the Taycan with the 93.4kW batter, and the limited number of reliable DC Fast Charging stations made it impossible to drive from Tucson to Las Vegas via...
  15. Electrify America completes cross-country EV charging route

Well, they don't call the desert Southwest the desert for nothing. Suggest no one try to drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix or vice versa. The lack of 50kW stations in Needles CA or Kingman AZ make the trip exciting if not dangerous! Both possible routes between Las Vegas and Phoenix have 200+...
  16. Distance & Range Anxiety - How Far Have You Gone

You got it. The more I explored this I found we here in the desert Southwest are in somewhat of a unique situation...we are literally a desert in two ways...climatically and charging infrastructure. I discovered if I were in Southern California or even in Palm Springs/Indio, I would have no...
  17. Distance & Range Anxiety - How Far Have You Gone

Frank, I don't disagree about the flexibility for those wanting to travel throughout the US in an EV. A viable charging station infrastructure will take time. Wish our Federal Government would do what the German government just did: mandate that ultimately all gas stations also have EV...
  18. Distance & Range Anxiety - How Far Have You Gone

All, Everything I have researched confirms that speed kills range! I have no argument with that, and that EV drivers need to take that into account when driving long distances (normally over 200 miles) between charging stations. Daveo4EV, has done an excellent job of laying out what an EV...
  19. Distance & Range Anxiety - How Far Have You Gone

Scandinavian, The issue I have with the PRI-D estimator is that it appears to not take into account the many other factors that are associated with a specific trip and range. I have asked the 3 Porsche dealerships in the Tucson/Phoenix area to even do a simple test with the Taycan on-board...
  20. Distance & Range Anxiety - How Far Have You Gone

Daveo4EV. I understand your position as well. I am still in a position of being able to wait. I still have my 2017 911 for the long distance trips, and my 2013 Boxster as my daily driver. Also, the pandemic has delayed the production of the all aluminum roof Taycan 4S I prefer, and it will...
