exactly the same was true for the C6 Z06 18 years ago. It had way more power than GT3 and GT2 and was faster on a drag strip and for a single hotlap at 50% or less of the price of a GT2. And we always had these discussion for the whole car market even 30+ years ago when the Japanese grew in...

yes of course: Porsche GT2(RS) vs. Corvette Z06 and Nissan GTR. Man, we had tons of discussions in trackday forums 15-20 years ago. Even the price multiplyer was very much the same as now. And the issue was also close to today: you had to mod both Z06 and GTR a lot to gain constant track...

to get you a better understanding what it means to gain some percent laptime: this is how a Plaid looks like on slick tires and completely modded & stripped, that shaped 3-4 seconds from the stock Plaid.

the only way to acquire these "PIDs" is sniffing with a Y-cable or be a good digital reverse engineer. I started like ~10 discussion with potential reversers and explorers promising great expectations in PMs here, never got a single useful result.
