To be fair, Tesla basically did stop selling the S entirely for most of Q2. If the Taycan still has the lead after Q3, though, that would be very surprising (IMO)... and extremely embarrassing for Tesla.

Still, good on Porsche, and good on all the other people who recognize that the Taycan is a great car!

Wow. More than 5,000 Taycans sold in the US in half a year. Happily ignoring the supply issues, this would mean 10,000 a year. With the US typically counting for about 25% of global sales, this means (potential) sales of 40,000 units globally in 2021. Quite something.

Is this ranking meaningful given the global semiconductor shortages? The shortages have a wildly uneven effect on sales not only by brand, but by model containing various options requiring semiconductors that may or may not be critically backordered.

I do think the Taycan is gaining traction in the US. I had a reservation for the new S release since early Spring that was supposed to be delivered in September of this year. Tesla delays, primarily business decisions on filling reservations for people that paid the 10k price increase after July rather than chip shortages, moved my delivery date to "Sometime in 2022". Ordered a Taycan in July and it is currently on a ship nearing the US with a projected delivery in October to my dealer.

I'm definitely happy to make the switch. I never even considered a Taycan prior to the last minute delay shenanigans with Tesla. Still have the reservation sitting in my pocket, and I think Tesla has a good product, but after sitting in a Taycan this summer for the first time, the overall quality and finish radically changed my mind on what quality level in an EV you should get for the pricetag that the Taycan and the high-end Model S play in now.

Very happy to see the numbers Porsche is putting up. Very promising, given the pandemic and shortages.
