Yesterday, I found that a 150kw charger was sending 173~5 kw to my Taycan RWD for several minutes.
So it can send more than its max rate?

A few others have commented about the same recently. I’m just curious, what rate do you see in the car at the time?

yeah the 150 kw chargers I've encountered (when I can get them to work) often times deliver more than 150 if conditions are right - the most I've seen so far is 187 kW from a 150 kW charger…and the most I've personally experienced from 350 kW charger is 264 kW (with 270 kW being the Taycan's maximum according to Porsche)

both numbers are excellent and make the Taycan in my opinion the fast charging EV in production - it's not only the high rate of charge - but the Taycan's ability to maintain these high rates over a bigger portion of the battery's SOC range…I have years of experience with Tesla's and fast charging and while Tesla's are no slouch - they have much more aggressive taper curves - they have good peak charging rates, but do not maintain the high charging rates for very long…

in practice the different between 350 and 150 kW stations in terms of time spent at the charging stall is minimal - because if you get 150 kW (or more) and it doesn't start to taper until like 60% SOC - that's really really fast and means you're leaving in 30 min or less if you don't push to charge much above 90%.

in my experience the rate "in car" and on the EA charger screen have always been "in-sync" only slight difference of 1 or 2 kW if not identical…

screen shot below is from a charging session Feb. 26th, 2022 @ EA 150 kW charger in Aptos, CA

charger and car showed virtually identical kW ratings…in this case 174.9 kW - while the charger itself is rated/advertised for 150 kw.

I’ll add that I’ve only just recently seen upwards of 178kw from the 150kw charger I use most frequently. I’ve also neared the 270kw max charge rate with 267kw pulled from a 350kw charger before.

I have enabled the optimized charging option, which I think keeps the charging rate down. I will try to avoid anything over 200 kW except during long trips

Many of the 150kW chargers have an amperage limit that puts it at around 150kW for 400V vehicles, but with 800V architectures they're no longer amperage limited, but just total power delivery limited and they'll do a little over 150kW. Typically 175kW. The 350kW chargers have the same dispenser (the unit with the display) and just has two 175kW chargers (the grey cabinets) working together.

Electrify America labels all of them 150kW for consistency, and because that's just the limit that most people will realistically see when using the chargers. Completely normal!

In theory they could merge them all and let them pair on demand (so 2 dispensers either act as 1x350kW or 2x175kW), but there's probably a good reason why they don't.

The rate that you see on the EA charger and most of DC chargers is sent from the car to the charger, the charger says that if you read the small letters while charging..
