Positive thread alert!

Completed 2x, +500 mile, 1-day trips this week….
  • Charge planner much faster as widely reported.
  • Plug & charge is a joy, working seamlessly with Ionity. I had the 22kW charger on my previous Taycan so did not have this feature. Takes c. 30secs from connecting to charging start.
  • The improved charging curve has changed my approach from driving fast and running the battery down to 5-10% to allow charging for as long as possible in the fastest 270kW range therefore minimising time stopped. I now just stop and top up when I feel like it. This is of course helped by the increased number of 350kW chargers around the motorway network.
  • Having 30% more range is noticeable on long trips, more charging options come into play to help find 350kW stations (see above), this is significant for long trips.
  • The car now displays when it is pre-heating the battery, the battery instrument menu indicates “Charging Planner active”. It starts ramping up battery temperature before a planned stop as you would expect, but it goes on and off -I am still trying to figure out what factors it is taking into account.
  • My J1 4S had air suspension but did not have PDCC and was a superb ride on motorways but Active Ride on the J1.2 is a clear step up, very little body movement making long days in the car more relaxing -helpful when spending 9/10 hours in the car!

Did you end up going with the 21inch wheels?

I'm assuming that you had a 2020 car? As that was a thing for that model year (incorrect cert was installed into the unit during manufacture). But from MY21 onwards the 22 kW on-board charger did allow plug & charge.

Takes c. 30secs from connecting to charging start.
Porsche says it has knocked 17 seconds off the charging start time when using RFID/APP and presumably similar for plug & charge:

Really interesting to read about your experience. A couple of questions from an owner that hasn't done too many long journeys but has generally found them more complicated than your recent experience::
  • Do you always use the Porsche satnav and charge planner? I ask because I find it not as good at selecting the best route as, say, Waze. But that, of course, takes the charge planner out of the equation.
  • Do you only use Ionity chargers and are they the only ones where you benefit from the plug & charge speed of hook-up benefit?
  • On long journeys, do you always plan your charging in advance? I found on my 2023 CT 4S that doing it on the move is really quite complicated - and basically requires a stop!

Good to read that one can take advantage of faster DC charging in England.
New England 350kW EA chargers seem to all reduce the curve to fit under ~200kW.

yes, the new 21" aero wheels with the Hankook tyres, I'm swapping to 20" with Michelin PS4s this week to assess the difference, noise level in particular

I had a 2021 CT previously, it did not work on that car but I did not try to fix it as I thought the 22kW charger was the problem

Glad you found it interesting, I cover about 22k miles per year so have become quite familiar with it all.

I use Waze on short/local trips, I agree it has the best guidance, traffic updates and importantly police warnings. On longer trips where charging is required I use Porsche satnav for the planning, battery management and to view in advance how busy the charge station is -albeit not 100% accurate as it is delayed info, but it gives you an idea if a stop is likely to have a queue (if it flips from 1 or 2 chargers free to none). On these long trips, I also use Waze for the traffic and police, I simply disconnect airplay and run both Nav's. I have my phone mounted with a proclip neatly beside the lower control display.

I prefer Ionity for ease and cost, but don't go out of my way to find them. Sometimes you need to force the nav to use a given charge stop by searching for it and setting it as a stopover, for example I prefer the coffee at some stops vs others!

Long and unfamiliar journeys I will check in advance to have a main and backup charge stop. I have been using the Porshce mobile phone app for this recently (rather than zap map), it really is excellent. Plan the route then scroll over it in the interactive map with the 'show charging stations' option checked, it is fast and slick, showing other chargers along the route. When on the move the Porsche nav is good to show other HPC charging options on the map with an indicator of how busy they are, the map is quite simple to manipulate, pinch and zoom etc.

that's a bummer!

The new battery display now indicates if the charger or car is limiting the charge level.

Are you using 20" wheels with Michelin PS4S or Michelin PS4 NF0 tires?

Also would you say ActiveRide is noticeably quieter at highway speeds as well as on broken pavement?

They are PS4 NF0. Not managed to fit them yet, waiting on jack pads.

Active Ride suspension noise is similar to standard suspension.

Any experience in Europe ? I'm thinking of buying a used J1.2 4S ST next year, I drive to Liguria in Italy at least twice a year, TM3 LR, obviously route planning and charging is abviously a doddle.

I've noticed an improvement in the non Tesla charging in France, Italy is a bit of a mixed bag. My wife's ID.3 route planning is awful, a particular favourite is sending you in the opposite direction to charge when there are options in the direction of travel, hence bit concerned re VW group (and others) route planning capabilities. I guess ABRP and car play would solve that one.

I have a test drive on the 18th and would keep this car for a good 5 years which will probably see me into retirement at which point the Euro mileage will increase (I plan to watch all 3 grand tours in Italy, France and Spain, do Norway and the south of Italy and Spain), the improvements in efficiency and battery density are encouraging but the software side has maybe made less progress ?

Thanks in advance

Not road tripped in Europe but the charge planning works great in the UK. Others, @tigerbalm have done extensive Euro road trips.

Not to Italy but to other places in Europe such as Germany to Istanbul, Kyle (OutOfSpec) has done long, repeated Europe road trips in the 2025 Taycan.
