Hi Guys

Omar here from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I have been studying and researching what the proper internal designation for the Taycan is and have finally concluded it is 966. I have found no online references to this but only one lone photo from Porsche that eludes to this designation number. So that makes the Porsche current line up as follows

966 = Taycan
911 = Carrera - Targa - Cabriolet
718 = Cayman - Boxster

You can find this image on the cover page of the Taycan official catalogue which can be downloaded from Porsche official website.

I believe Porsche refers to the Taycan as internal designation Y1A - you can find that in their internal documentation. It’s also been referred to as J1, but haven’t seen it with a numeric model designation.

Thank you for your replies.

At Porsche each car has an internal designation number to identify the project name (the car) but sometimes the marketing department doesn’t want the number to be affiliated with the car for reasons as mentioned above.

In short 966 is what I believe to be the internal porsche designation number as no previous car had this number and using it so prominently on the cover of the Taycan catalog is not a mistake.

The story with 911 is a little funny, Peugeot had a patent for X0Y, so 901 was out of the question and they added +10 for 911.

I read somewhere once that they called the eponymous 911 the Porsche “901” and only as they were about to release the car they realized that Peugeot had indeed protected 901. As they were not flush with cash at the time, and had already ordered the metal numbers to put on the car, i.e. lots of 9s, 0s and 1s, they decided to bin the 0s and order more 1s and chose 911.

So in theory the 911 could also have been the 900, 100, 199!
