you can purchase the following for just the cost of the Porsche 25ft cable
  1. Tesla Gen2 UMC 32 amp charger
  2. a full set of NEMA adapters (8 different north american plug types)
  3. 80 Amp JDApter/TeslaTap
  4. includes a bag for your mobile usage
but about $100 _LESS_ that just the the 25 cable from Porsche.
Dave -

I'm new to the EV world, and love my Taycan 4S. I would rather have a more mobile charger in the trunk for trips, and the 4 items you mention above look just right.

Assuming I'm reading this right, your help on a couple of couple of questions would be appreciated --
  • Q1: It seems Items 1 & 3 provide a charging solution for the Taycan that I can take on the road - correct?
  • Q2: Item 2 provides different connector plugs, but for what receptacle types?
  • Q3: Do you happen to have any links to websites where I can purchase these items?

Thanks!

Q1 - correct - the charger comes with a NEMA 5-15 plug adapter - this is a normal household outlet - you can purchase additional adapters listed below to cover most plug types you'll encounter.
Q2 - the set of receptical types are listed at the link i’ll provide below - you dont’ have to purchase them all - but the kit is useful and covers _MOST_ plugs you’ll actually run into in the wild. - see post #34 on this thread for a picture of plug-types provided in the bundle.
Q3 - see below

https://shop.tesla.com/product/gen-2-mobile-connector-bundle
https://shop.tesla.com/product/nema-adapter-bundle

this approach REQUIRES purchase of either an 80 amp JDApter _OR_ 80 amp TeslaTap - so you’ll need to purchase one of these from either of the two links below - but not both - you'll need the adapter to convert the Tesla plug type to the standard J-1772 plug type used by the Taycan - with out purchasing one of these adapters you CAN NOT use the Tesla mobile charger w/Taycan. But the JDApter/TeslaTap is useful beyond the mobile charger, it also lets you use Tesla Chargers (not superchargers) you find at businesses…so it serves double duty.

https://www.shop.quickchargepower.com/JDapter-Stub-40-Amp-Tesla-Charge-Station-Adaptor-JDPTRSTB.htm

or

http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=17&product_id=100

Notes:
  1. the Mobile Tesla UMC is 32 amps maximum charge rate - not 40 like the porsche - but for occasional road-trip use its more than sufficient - but if you want a 40 amp mobile charger you’ll have to look at other products from other vendors - but keep in mind only 2 of the adapter plugs are 40/50 amp plugs - all the other plugs are fewer amps than 32 so when using those plug types a 32 or 40 amp charger doesn't matter…since the plug type will limit the the maximum charge rate to 24 amps or less.
  2. why 80 amps? you do not need the 80 amp version to use with Mobile charger - it’s only 32 amps - the reason to have the 80 amp version is for when you use it with someone else’s Tesla Wall Charger (hotel, golf course, winery, restaurant, etc) - it may offer more than 40 amps and the Taycan will gladly charge at 48 amps and potentially overload a 40 amp JDapter/TeslaTap.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

here is the list of NEMA plug-types that are included in the connector kit bundle: - the mileage gain per-hour of charge for the Taycan is between the Model S & Model X or so…

this adapter is quite useful for charging at RV parks

https://www.evseadapters.com/products/tt-30-adapter-for-tesla-model-s-x-3-gen-2/

the most common electrical outlets found at race tracks and RV parts are either:

NEMA 14-50 or TT-30 plug type - the NEMA 14-50 plug type is covered in the adapter, bundle, and the TT-30 adapter for the Tesla UMC Gen2 (UMC = Universal Mobile Charger) is available from evseadatpers.com…

May be good to mention that a Taycan with 20" wheels gets efficiency between a Model S and Model X in the chart above. Thanks for as sharing that detail and your very clean charger setup Dave.

Just FYI. The cost of the PMCC (7PP-971-675-BL) purchased by itself, is $2093.88. The cost of the 25 foot car charging cable (7PP-971-676-BC) is $927.95. The cost of the 14-50 power whip (7PP-971-678-ED) is $203.42. The cost of the "Fixing Set" (the 2 M4x10 countersunk Torx screws and the Torx T-15 allen wrench, 9Y0-927-129) is unknown right now as the dealer just gave me the kit!

So, to get a complete functional charger outside of your initial purchase will cost you at least $3,225.25 plus sales tax/VAT in your area. Please keep in mind, you MUST have all four parts listed above to have a complete and functional PMCC.

Please don't ask me how I know.........

Toby
Wow that is expensive! 3225 plus vat etc? No wonder Porsche forced you to buy this and not as an option for the fisrst owners. Ridiculous!

At least we here in Europe can get a good alternative that was brought to my knowledge by Teslabjorn.

This is a good road trip set and additional connectors can be bought for a reasonable cost.

Hello there,

for people in Europe, the Keba KeContact P30 x can do load management spread out over up to 15 P30 chargers. That is good enough for a reasonable garage ;-).

What it can also do is to vary the charging power with the amount of power available from a specific source, in my case the solar cells on the roof. So you can specify "only charge with so much power as remains after the regular house functions have been fulfilled, and adjust it for every cloud obstructing the sunlight automatically".

Cheers,
Henrik

Europe also has access to the Porsche Engergy manager which can do load balancing across multiple PMCC's (based on the marketing description).

Correct but at a price. And to be honest the functions with HEM is not that fantastic. You can control solar power and load sharing as well as restricting charge with the PMCC. But it is not easy to set up and requires quite a lot of extra sensors etc.

For home use I am jealous about the guys in the UK with the Zappi, which seems a great product.

Zappi is really good. I’m about to pull the trigger on solar panels to feed into it.

Interesting! I tried using my TESLA UMC and got a charging error every time....... Wondering if I might have version 1 and that that makes a difference or the European one just does not work on other cars.... It does say on it that it only works with Tesla cars but that can be a legal disclaimer if there is an electrical fire or other major problem caused by the coupling of the UMC and a non Tesla........

PS I bought the NRGKick so am good but the Tesla UMC is just so simple and small...... :)
