Another data point.... I replaced my PMCC with a Chargepoint Home Flex 14-50 charger today. Too much uncertainty with the PMCC with hot cables and potential derating for Porsche. One hour time well spent to dismount the PMCC and install the Chargepoint. Glad the PMCC is part of the lease.

Moving on
Completed 3 separate three hour charges this week. The power cable supply to the Chargepoint was a little box warm (below 100F) at the completion of each charging event (garage was ~85F). The Chargepoint box and cable to the car were essentially ambient temperature. Very happy with the upgrade.

The PMCC is now collecting dust on a shelf. Will probably use it for road trip, although it's pretty bulky.

Here is updated (as of July 25, 2022) Porsche TSB about Porsche EVSEs causing high temps on Taycans. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10217261-0001.pdf

Status:
"Please advise customers to reduce charging current to maximum 30A (Mobile Charger Connect) or 50% (Mobile Charger Plus). This topic remains under investigation. This document will be updated with additional information when available."
But how do I lower the amperage myself? I only have the basic charger.

My car is going in for the ANA6 update tomorrow. I am bringing along my PMC+ for the WMP2 recall as well. Is the WMP2 just documentation and a sticker or is the PMC+ modified via firmware so that it operates at a lower rate. When using my PMC+ on a 40 Amp 240v circuit the car charges at 8.6 kW which I believe means it is drawing 35+ Amps, which is above the 32 Amps I expected.

For me it was just a sticker! The technician just wanted to make sure I new how to run the charger at 50% or 20 amps!

they do not modify the PMC+/PMCC physically or with new software - if they "adjust" the PMC+/PMCC it's a configuration change that you can override once you have the unit back in your possession - it's the ultimate pointless recall - no actual changes - just kinda of an admission the units can get warm/hot when run at full capacity.

if you want a quality 40 amp EVSE look elsewhere rather than the Porsche EVSE - they sticker and this campaign pretty much seal the deal that their EVSE sucks.

They should offer a "No EVSE (-$1,000)" option or reduce the price and make EVSE an option in the build. It should help their supply chain woes too, less EVSE's to source, each EVSE having many suppliers for its various parts I'm sure. Tesla already made the EVSE's optional a while back, so not unprecedented and no big public backlash (and Tesla EVSE's don't suck either). Unless of course Porsche has boat-loads (perhaps literally) of PMC+/PMCC's that they need to get rid of.

EVSE's will eventually become like USB chargers - no one need another USB charger - I agree the EVSE should be optional - and Porsche's would be last on my list of choices.

So, I wrote into Porsche customer service complaining about the charging issue with the PMCC and received this letter back today. At least they said it is a temporary issue and they are working to resolve.

Porsche Taycan [ANNOUNCED] - PMCC tech advisory : charging rate amperage lowered for "normal" usage of the PMCC (rate reduced by half) 1666800113594

Thank you for reaching out to Porsche Cars North America regarding your 2020 Taycan Turbo. We regret to learn of your disappointment regarding the recently sent update detailing our current temporary fix for your Porsche Mobile charger. We understand any frustration you may be experiencing, and I appreciate this opportunity to follow up with you.

We would also like to apologize for the delay in our reply, as we have been undergoing internal restructuring, we have seen an increase in our response times.

At Porsche, customer safety is our top concern, in every product we manufacture. In order to prevent any potential safety hazards, such as overheating of the charging cable, we have temporarily reduced the charging speed of the Porsche Mobile charger by 50%. At this time, we do not currently have a timeline as to when a permanent option will be available, but we appreciate your patience during this time.

We value your passion for Porsche, and thank you for taking the time to reach out to us. If there is anything else I may be able to advise you on, please let me know, or give us a call at 1-800-PORSCHE. Our hours of operation are Mon - Fri 8am to 10pm and Sat 8am - 8pm EST.

I appreciate your time and thank you for your understanding. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day.

Anyone remember long time ago when the iPhone 4 had the antennagate issue, where the signal would drop if you held the phone a certain way? Apple's solution was to let people buy 3rd party cases and get imbursed for them for free.

There's an idea for Porsche. If you can't fix your EVSE then let the owners buy one that'll work and then give them the money back. Its not that much. Typical mobile EVSEs are like $500 or less while Porsche sells theirs for 2000-3000$$$ from the dealer.

it does if the car can handle it…if you have an 80 amp onboard charger (optional for Taycan and other vehicles) then it should pump 19.2 kW no problem.
Hypothetically, yes. I was more or less commenting on Porsche's track record of delivering reliable EVSE units.

Their goal was a universal 80A charger for all EV's. Did Porsche start officially supporting other EV's on their Wall Connector, or at least unofficially made it work?
