If you haven't tried regen in auto mode (press and hold the regen button on the left near volume control) its very cool. Car automatically senses traffic in front and engages regen otherwise with no traffic it will coast will no regen. Very nice feels like a downshift. (sort of ha ha) Try it !!!

How are the two situations different? The car always uses regen for slowing down unless there is a severe need to stop/slow down, right? At least, that is what I understood.

In Auto regen mode, the amount of regen applied (when you lift off of the throttle) will vary based on the speed of the vehicle in front of you. Basically it will apply more or less regen as needed to slow down. You have to decide if you like the unpredictable nature of that or not. Personally I do not but there are others on the forum who do - for example when coasting downhill. So, it's good you have the option for no regen at throttle lift-off, fixed regen at throttle lift-off, and variable (auto) regen at throttle lift-off.

Also note that none of the regen settings change the fact that when you press the brake pedal the car will use regen to slow down until the needed deceleration exceeds the regen capability (first 500 miles of the car's life notwithstanding).

I've been wondering about a related question: at what degree (if any) of this automatic recuperative braking do the brake lights activate? If the car in front is at a much lower speed (thus calling for a stronger auto-braking), does this activate the brake lights? What about when a much more subtle degree of auto-braking is called for? Does it behave the same if in ACC mode, Innodrive mode, etc?

The brake lights will come on if you press the pedal, or if the auto regen deceleration is above a certain threshold.
