The autonews article talks about generating torque at a larger diameter, and that’s what made me think of it.
But power is limited to current and voltage. So, if you use develop more torque, you do so at a lower speed (for a given power).

Ring motors typically have higher pole counts so they rotate slower for a given frequency. They work well in applications where the pole count works out to be able to direct-couple them and eliminate the gearbox entirely.

I’m not sure if these work the same or not.
