I have the heads up display (HUD) in my car, along with adaptive cruise control. The speed displayed is about 98% clear, but when I adjust the distance between my car and the car in front, the lines that are displayed are very blurry and have almost a double-image look to them. It looks like the image gets worse the further away from the speed displayed. It's very apparent that there is something wrong with the projection.

I brought it to the dealer yesterday, and they had no idea why it was doing this. They promised to look into it, so I'll wait to hear from them. They even confirmed it with another car, and mine is clearly messed up.

Has anyone else seen this before? It's almost like there is an extra layer of plastic on the HUD module that is causing the double projection. When I touch the HUD module in the dashboard, it feels like a plastic cover. It's certainly not glass. And I don't have any coatings on my windshield. It's a brand new car, but it does have the acoustic noise-reduction glass.

I have HUD, too, but have never seen this. Do you have pictures?

Did you try to move the location of the HUD display? - if it's over at the extremes you could suffer optical effects. Does the problem get better/worse if you move your head around? (sit higher/lower/to side).

I don't have a picture at the moment. I tried moving the location around, but it doesn't improve at all. The dealer tried the same thing without success. If I move my head around, nothing changes. My best guess is that there is something in the optical view path that is causing a double image - but I don't know what that is.

I have a bit of an experience with this.
In late 2023, when I took delivery of the new car from the dealer, my HUD was blurry in general. Not "hard to see blurry", but rather "makes you wonder why it is not sharper". So, when I addressed the dealer, they had absolutely nothing to say.

Fast forward one year, my windshield gets a stone and is changed shortly after, all done at the dealer. And, lo and behold, HUD is suddenly super crisp, miles better than it was. Dealer - again, no idea.
I happen to have a second car, a w222 coupe, and had a chat with my mechanics servicing it the other day. They simply laughed and said this issue is very old and is common in Mercedes too - sometimes the software controlling the HUD just needs a re-flash. Which is what the dealer routinely did when changing the windshield. Since then, my colleague who got a Macan EV has also complained about a blurry HUD since new.
