So took delivery of my 4S on 10/8 and am loving the car - most fun I’ve ever had driving. Day of pickup my dealer told me that the PCM was having an issue accepting my Porsche ID and that there was an issue on the back end with Porsche AG. But the car won’t accept any ID / password combo - is states “The feature has been disabled”. Anyone else experiencing this who recently took delivery? @LukeManning have you seen this?

Confirm that the Privacy option is turned off in the Settings. In my experience, it became available after about a day.

Pretty sure privacy is "inactive" but I'll check again. Not sure how the car is supposed to communicate with the rest of world...does it have it's own hotspot vs having to tie it to my home wifi?

It has a limited purpose Verizon SIM that uses an LTE data connection. It cannot connect to other internet connections like home wifi.

2021 Taycan - On order
Country flag
Apologies if this is in the wrong thread. I am new to Porsche and to EV. My Taycan is on order. Orignally scheduled for 1/1/21 but I pushed it back to 1/30/21 so that I could take advantage of some new MY21 options. My question is around the Connect app and Porsche Accounts. Do I really NEED either of them? Since I don't have a vehicle to register yet, I don't really know what they provide. I read all the threads and I understand that having the vehicle "connected" gives me the ability to check on it's whereabouts, pre-condition it's temperature, change charging profiles and store my identity (and credit card) for Electrify America charging use. All good things, of course. But 99% of my usage will be charge from home, no overnight parking it anywhere, charging profile set on the car itself. I'll use Carplay alot and all my music is stored on my phone. Settings for seat positions, mirrors, etc are stored "on the key". So, given all the issues with the Connect App and UserIDs, my questions are:
1. Can I use the car in the fashion I describe without ever "connecting" it?
2. What does having the car connected to my Porsche ID really give me? Are there other "services" that are provided through the ID? I imagine OTA updates is one of those "services" that I would be missing out on.
3. Does privacy mode essentially "take the car offline" or is it still "connected" just not transmitting certain private data?

Thanks.

Hey there Jeff! SO sorry for the late reply.

I don't believe I have seen this error yet. I know occasionally Porsche in Germany does updates on the server and it usually ends up being around the time when I'm trying to log a client into a car here in the US.

I would just say keep trying. When we first got our Taycan here I had to enter in the Email and Password over 25 times for it to finally register because it kept saying "Username and Password Incorrect" even though it was correct... More often than not the server is the issue, not the car.

In response to your questions:

1. Can I use the car in the fashion I describe without ever "connecting" it?
-I would not recommend it. You'll basically be relegated to the Guest account for the car, which is finicky and will often delete all of your settings such as your seat memory, favorite stations, saved addresses, music settings, etc. etc. In training they told us ALL TAYCAN MUST BE CONNECTED BEFORE LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP. Dealers are also tracked on their connection status. I wouldn't ever let a Taycan client of mine leave the dealership without having their vehicle connected.

2. What does having the car connected to my Porsche ID really give me? Are there other "services" that are provided through the ID? I imagine OTA updates is one of those "services" that I would be missing out on.
-Some software updates, Satellite Maps, Maps Traffic, Weather App, News App, Being able to connect to the car via the Porsche Connect App, Seat Memory, Memory for the Music/Media system, Remote Access for charging, Free Charging Service through Electrify America, I'm sure more but I'm forgetting.

3. Does privacy mode essentially "take the car offline" or is it still "connected" just not transmitting certain private date?
-It is just not transmitting certain data. Car is still technically connected to an LTE signal and transmitting certain data to Porsche.

All in all I would highly recommend getting your Porsche Connect Account set up in order to enjoy everything the Taycan has to offer.

Thanks for the thorough response. Very helpful. A quick follow on. You mention that "seat memory" is one of the items stored in the profile. I assume that this information is stored locally (car?, key? ) since you want the seat settings to take effect as soon as you open the car and thus possibly before the car connects. Also, does the car know which account to load based on the key that it detected or does it always default to the last account used? In other words, if my wife and I both have a key and an account, how does it know which account settings to load?

It actually does not store the Seat/SteeringWheel/Mirror Memory locally in the car. All of those settings are stored in "the Cloud" (Porsche Server) so when you start up the car it quickly accesses the cloud and pulls down the memory. Every time you make a change to the Seat/SteeringWheel/Mirror it automatically saves this change to your profile.

There are 3 seat memory settings on the side of the door, like all Porsches. These are tied to the car and you can save 3 different seat memory settings to these dummy buttons. That being said, they do not interact with your profile. Meaning whatever you save to the buttons will not be automatically updated if you make changes, you will have to manually pretty M and then the number you want it assigned to.

Your Porsche Connect profile allows you to create another profile under a totally different email/password for the same car. Your wife could either create her own profile, and switch to it anytime she gets into the car. Or she could just save her Seat/SteeringColumn/Mirror settings to a dummy button on the door.

Hope this helps! Sounds more complicated than it actually is.

Since October 11 I haven't been able to log into the car (after the 12V battery died). Porsche customer support says they are working on it with no date for a fix. I tried creating a secondary user account for my wife and logging in and get the same result - incorrect credentials even though I know they are correct. I don't have the time and patience to try 25 times (since it takes at least 60 seconds for it to fail). One of the options suggested was to factory reset - this also fails (the factory reset step fails, then after restarting the PCM I still can't log in).

I'm sure this is what you meant, but just to clarify: the profile is connected to the key, so depending on which key unlocks the car, the correct profile is loaded and used. You do not have to manually select the right profile.

I logged out of my account to set up my wife's login in the car. Big mistake. Now it is telling me that "Logging in is not possible at present. Please try again later".

I guess it is now her car. Go buy yourself a 2021 to correct the problem. Hope she enjoys it. Wink.
