each about 1/2 the cost of the Porsche charger
True, but they don't provide the feature of the Porsche charger:

There is a nice video created by Tom Moloughney, North American Plug-In Vehicle Specialist called "Everything You Need To Know About Charging The Porsche Taycan." He makes the same point you do, @daveo4EV, that one can save $400 bucks with a 3rd-party charger - and that most of the Mobile Charger Connect features are available from 3rd party products – except connection with the car for per-conditioning, connect to one's Porsche account, and interconnection with the Porsche Energy Manager.

Are these additional Porsche-specific features valuable?

here are my thoughts:
  • you don’t need the porsche charger to start/stop charging remotely you use the porsche app for that and talk to the car - the charger is not the remote start/stop control
  • schedule is via the app not the porsche charger - again that is the car not the porsche charger - the charger is not what manages the schedule
  • some 3rd party chargers have charging history some don’t - after the first two months you’ll never look at it again
  • porsche energy manager isn’t a thing in the US - porsche energy manager is currently not available in North American markets
  • touch screen is “Meh” - it has about 4 menus and slow
  • wifi is the for the remote features that you’ll never use so that it can upload the charging session data to your porsche account
the one thing that the Porsche charger does that is almost useful (note the almost) is that it uploads your charging session data to your porsche account - if for some reason you care to view it…I‘m not sure how valuable that actually is...see below - sure it’s fun - but honestly what difference does it make you’re going to plug in and charge the car - it doesn’t matter how much power it uses or how long it took or when you did it.

and the third party charger’s NEMA 14-50 plugs don’t overheat if you buy a good one.

I have the PMCC - color me unimpressed - especially for $1200

the Porsche charger is not awful - it’s just super expensive for what it does and it’s not that great given the price - it does however charge the car and will “just work” - but so will other chargers.

Keep in mind PMCC is rated at 22kW so ensure you compare apples with apples.

PMCC is also designed to integrate with Porsche Home.Enwrgy Manager but not sure many folk make use of this.

There is nothing wrong with the STD PMC Plus either which you get for free - 9.6kW + and is WiFi enabled. Perfect for home and mobile charging.

I just configured (actually re-configured for the 9th time!) mine this AM and the web site does not have any of this..hope it is true
2021 Turbo S standard E-Mobility feature list from configurator:

Does not show something called "Porsche Mobile Charger Plus"

Anyone have a reference to a "Porsche Mobile Charger Plus" ?

From the Porsche newsroom article, The charging process: Quick, comfortable, intelligent and universal :

Porsche also offers the following charging equipment:
  • With a capacity of up to 11 kW, Porsche Mobile Charger Connect is a quick and convenient way to charge the Taycan at home overnight.
  • With the portable, three-kilogram Porsche Mobile Charger Plus (available from mid-2020), it can be charged at home or on the road with a maximum of 11 kW.

not the US - 9.6 KW - unless you get the 19.2 kW version - which earliest availability is may - cost unknown - availability unknow - and then in the US it will _NOT_ be mobile - 19.2 kW would mandate a “hardwired” version as per US building codes for 240 volt appliances in excess of 50 amps - (19.2 kW would be 240 volts at 100 amp breaker - 80 amp charge rate - hardwired, not portable).

in the US all mobile chargers are limited to 40 amps (9.6 kW) via a NEMA 14-50/6-50 plug)

so yes comparing apples to apples the porsche 9.6 kW mobile charger is $1200 where you can buy an equal charger for $300 that will not overheat like the PMCC does, is more mobile (smaller and lighter) and has a wider range of adapter plugs that the vendor won’t charge you $432 for (yes that is what Porsche charges for the NEMA 10-30 plug adapter for PMCC via parts post purchase).

that article is wrong and must be referring to the european version - Mobile chargers in the US are limited to 9.6 kW (240 volts @ 40 amps) - 11 kW charging requires a 60 amp breaker (48 amp charge rate) and there is _NO_ plug in North America that supports 60 amps - _IF_ you have a 48 amp chargers (60 amp breaker) it will be hardwired and not mobile.

Porsche and their dealers know very very little about EV charging (actually worse than little, cause they spread disinformation cause they are sooo wrong), are often wrong, and information is confusing because Porsche is a euro-centric company and they are mostly unaware of differences between the europe and the US…so the dealers parrot talking points that are not applicable in the North America markets.

the information you are being fed is mostly incorrect for the North american market.

Aside from the country / region differences check the STD equipment list in terms of charger provided. PMCC is an optional extra and the PMC Plus (aka PMC) comes FoC - in UK /.Europe at a minimum.

The PMCC (or PMC) are.both classed as "mobile" given they dock and can be removed as required. No argument.

The UK / European model of PMCC is 22kW capable (works rather well on single phase delivering 7.4kW @ 32 A) and the lower spec PMC Plus is rated at 9.6kW (7.4 kW / 32 A) again perfect for home use and geographical region.

I believe the PMC+ is networkable according to the operating manual (that’s what + gives you). It has a lower output to the PMCC (9.6kW rather than 22 kW max) and doesn’t have the touch screen display. I’m also not sure how well it fits in the Porsche Charging Dock as it is a lower profile to the PMCC.
Do you know if the PMC+ (Or PMCC) allows you to be notified if the vehicle is not plugged in by a certain time each night? Via app or email? I know a lot of third-party chargers such as the ChargePoint homeflex, the Juicebox, etc. all allow that “reminder” which is sort of nice… Especially for first time electric vehicle owners who have not yet built the habit
