Porsche Taycan Custom Cross Turismo Rear Bike Rack Group Buy IMG_7998

4/12/2022 Original Post:

Hi,

Those of you who followed my thread about my custom rear rack have shown alot of interest so I've put together this group buy. Deadline to sign up is 4/22!!

With no reliable ETA on the Porsche rack in sight, and issues and complaints that users have had with the Porsche unit, I had my rack quoted and have details below for anyone that wants to purchase the same setup.

The details are as follows:
  • Includes 2 fully assembled extension bars, anodized black, stainless steel hardware, and plastic finishing caps. Bars are 32" long, 3" longer than my prototype for added clearance to car.
  • Includes 2 1up roof tray racks with 1up hardware for universal mounting as well as hardware that will bolt on the extension bars flush, as pictured.
  • Load rating for the rack is 75lbs per bike. 3.1" tire width limit.
  • Expected shipping June 3rd.
  • $955 including shipping with $500 deposit once minimum 10 people have signed up.
  • Outside continental US we can sort out shipping rates separately.
I can also build you an optional trailer light plug that will deactivate rear PDC, LCA, and remote hatch opening. $50. You can also make this yourself by following the instructions I posted here.

The timeline I want to stick to to get your racks to you by early June is as follows:

4/22: If 10+ orders are confirmed, I'll provide instructions to send me the $500 deposit by venmo/paypal/zelle. I'll place the order for the 1up racks and the extension bars as soon as I get 10 deposits which may be before this date.
5/3: 10 day lead time for machining. Should have pics of the bars in process and ready to ship.
5/31: 4 week lead time for shipping extension bars from China. My wife was kind enough to use her factory contacts to set this up with a trusted machinist. Exhausted efforts to find a machinist in the US but our supplier will be lower cost and overall lead time about the same as reputable shops stateside. I'll also be doing some small machining work for the locking pins in the US.
6/3: Packed and shipped out of California. Before this point I'll be getting your balance and shipping address.
6/10: Delivered around this time via Fedex Ground.

Please express your interest by replying below and I'll add your name to the below list. If you want the trailer plug, please specify, otherwise I'll assume you don't want it.

  1. @Visceral incl. plug

I am in if I ever get my car. I am waiting on a port hold with a few others, with no confirmed completion date. Mildly hopeful this month, but who knows.

Will confirm once I know (or if I give up).

Thank you for putting this together - really quite cool of you.

Great job. I allready have the 1 UP tray. How much for just the bars? $435?
$487. We're getting the 1up trays at a 10% discount so I just subtracted the discounted amount. Let me know if you're in for just the bars.

Got it, I forgot about the 10% off on the trays. I need a little more time to see if my dealer will let me keep the factory bars that I have or not. Most likley I will want to purchase the bars from you.

Yep I’m in.

I’ll probably make my own plug with a switch so I can open the hatch. Does the hatch open when you’ve got yours plugged in?

Great!

Only manually by the external button. The touch screen controls will unlatch the hatch, but it won't power lift. Can't remember if the key fob is the same as the touch screen or if it's deactivated completely.

I'm in! So this will stay as a completely assembled unit? Do you have an estimated dimension for it assembled? I would also like the trailer plug.

One more suggestion if it’s not too late :)

Could we add a countersink to the bottom fastener holes so we can use flush head countersunk screws instead of the cap head screws? That would allow for a dab of epoxy in the Allen hole to make disassembly/theft very difficult. Apologies if I’m over indexing on the theft thing but I’ve seen some crazy stuff here in the bay!

It needs to be disassembled to be removed so the 4 bolts that hold the trays on would be removed and essentially up have 4 long slender parts to store away. I have also just unassembled one bar and tilted the trays up to remove them from the sockets in the car. That works too if you've got somewhere to hang the assembly. About 57"x32" foot print.

I hear you, I swear I would make a good thief if given the chance. I was looking at my Thule Pro XT rack the other day and realized that even with the lock, if you had a hex driver you could take off the bikes locked to the trays in just a few seconds.

Unfortunately, the carriage bolts come from the t-slot in the tray and the bottom "tamper-proof" hex socket is actually an internally threaded nut. Not sure if you could find a countersunk head for that. I just have a 0.5mm chamfer for lead in on those holes. *Edit: you could still use a countersunk screw and a t-nut, is probably what you were suggesting. If you wanted to further customize your rack with a larger chamfer, that would be pretty easy to do.

Do you have an approximate weight assembled? Also if you are by yourself you would just need to install one tray?
