EDMUNDS SAYS:

These two luxury EVs are very closely matched. The Tesla Model S offers more range and features for less money, while the Porsche Taycan counters with more refinement and driver engagement. From Edmunds’ standpoint, the Taycan squeaks out a slight win here.

Excellent objective article. I especially like this quote as the Taycan's range is my most prominent concern, "The upshot? In real-world driving you won’t notice as much of a range difference between these two cars as the specs suggest."

Tesla makes a better EV (the best EV)
Porsche makes a better vehicle (perhaps the best)

two different focuses - both could learn from each other.

Software tech : advantage Tesla
Mechanical tech : advantage Porsche
Combined : tie
No?

The article describes driving aids and software tech (like carplay) in the Technology section, not mechanical. So I think Tesla is a clear winner there.

Mechanically Taycan is a clear winner, but that probably falls under the Driving Experience.

A tie for technology?
yeah - I'd humbly suggest porsche loses this one - but Edmunds not had to live with it - on paper Porsche looks to be a tie, but in reality they are more than a bit behind.

I note that Edmonds is sticking with the 323 range for the Taycan. Even if not true, the Taycan is competitive. But anyone buying a Taycan is doing it for the driving experience.

Tesla wins on charging infrastructure. Not to kick the hornets nest, but if the charging reliability on EA is solved and they continue to expand, Porsche arguably wins charging with the 800V pack.

Edit: obviously a US centric view, although I suspect Tesla has a leg up in almost all parts of the world right now.

They also omit tradition, style, pedigree and heritage.

Porsche takes it on this one, by a quantum leap. Combined with driver experience that seals it for me.

No matter how many fancy tricks the Tesla has up it’s sleaves like showing a fire place on the screen or playing Mario Bros or whatever. It’l never make up for the aforementioned.

Very much so!

In EU the public charging network is already pretty strong and in China the SCN is irrelevant. My old MS90D can now only charge with an adapter even on the SCN. We pay usually between 1 RMB and 1.6 RMB per kWh (15 to 25 cent) on public fast chargers...

Not IONITY in Germany but a south western grid company. There was even a Taycan waiting for a free spot. EA users are lucky, they have always free chargers!

Highway resting place 200km northeast of Beijing past the last Chinese great wall historically in Mongolian territory. Installed by a Chinese grid company.

hey, at least I called out my own bias?

Clearly I need to spend time driving an EV in other parts of the world.
