I was recently exploring the excellent EV site:

https://www.evseadapters.com/collections/new-tesla-model-3-gen-2-charging-adapters/

and this site has a number of custom and well made NEMA plug adapters for the aspiring EV road warrior - they have made these adapters for the Tesla Gen2 UMC - so if you already have one of these EVSE's in your kit - you can bolster your kit with even more charging plug adapters to sit unused in your frunk for many years to come…

for me from this site these are the most interesting ones I've found:

50A Locking (CS8265 / CS8264 / CS8269) to NEMA 14-50R EV Adapter
L14-30 Twist-lock Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2
L5-20 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3 Gen 2
L5-30 120V Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3 Gen 2
L6-20 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3 Gen 2
L6-30 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2
L5-15 Twist-Lock Adapter for Tesla Model S/3/X/Y Gen 2
NEMA 10-50 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3 Gen 2
NEMA 5-30 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2
NEMA 5-50 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2
NEMA 6-30 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2
TT-30 Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3/Y Gen 2

some of the "L" plugs are all rounded "locking" plugs - these are common on generators and a great way to charge your EV in a crisis when all you have access to is a generator.

I expect the ultilization of these plugs to be very very very low over the life of your road warrior kit - but they are additional plug types you might run into…

of the list above there are 2 that are most interesting:

TT-30 (RV parks and camp grounds)
6-30 - 30 amp plugs in race car garages for tire warmers (Laguna Seca)

@daveo4EV I’m coming back to this thread since my car was delivered today (not ready for a few more days however), why the 80 amp converter (Tesla to J1772) versus the 50 amp? I am not aware of any Tesla hotel / public stations that run that high. Do they? Is there a reason for the higher amperage?

well techically according to an eMail thread I had with the TeslaTap guys - 50 amp model is rates for 40 amps continuous load…and some Tesla Destination chargers will charge your taycan at 48 amps.

the maximum rate your 2020 Taycan will charge at is 48 amps - and if you plug into a 48 amp or bigger Tesla charger (ones at Sea Scape in Aptos are 80 amp chargers) then you need the extra head room to be in specification.

As always you are a wealth of information. Thanks for the detailed response...80 amp it is!

@Dlurker20 - honestly the 50 amp is proably “fine” - but it’s a $15x,xxx vehicle, and burnt/melted plastic is not good for the paint job - and difference between the 50 amp and 80 amp is less than $50

better to be safe than sorry in this space

This adapter is backwards for Taycan use
I think that you are thinking of the small plastic adapter that comes with Teslas to use a J1772 on a Tesla. The TeslaTap and others like it are $200-$300 adapters with a Tesla female to a J1772 male and can be use on most any non-Tesla EV.

Dave,
What do I need to do to the PMCC settings if I am out in the wild and using a 14-50 to 5-15 adapter. The PMCC is no longer getting 240 with this set up. I know my PMCC came with a 115 plug but am trying to avoid the swap over.

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Rob

the PMCC comes with a NEMA 5-15 supply cable - I’d recommend using that - but if you are using a NEMA 14-50 to 5-15 adapter - you would need to dial the amps down to (12) - 12 amps is 80% of 15 amps...

my assumption is you‘re going this way

PMCC <—- 14-50 <—- Adapter <—- NEMA 5-15R (household plug)

again I’d just use the NEMA 5-15 supply cable that comes with the PMCC in this case so that the PMCC will just do the right thing.

Yes agree with Dave, and you change the amperage on the screen of the Porsche Mobile Connect, you should not need to do anything on PCM @r553

Especially since the PMCC seems more stable than the car (if firmware is updated).

Usually, nothing bad happens because you pop the house circuit breaker if the PMCC tries to deliver more than 15 or 20 amps (depending on NEMA 5-15R circuit). The danger (happened to me due to a 1.8 kW heater) is if the current drawn is just high enough to almost, but not quite pop the house breaker - heat on marginal circuit connections start to melt wire insulation. Or, worse case, start a fire. But circuits managed by a computer never fail, right? :(And this is why the safest path is Dave's suggestion.

the supply cables are pretty easy to swap _IF_ you don’t worry about the set-screw - personally given the “locking mechanism” for the PMCC supply cables I believe the set screw is more of a “theft” issue than a safety or security issue - but I honestly don’t know - if there is no set-screw swapping PMCC supply cables only takes about 30 seconds…

daveeo4EV, do you have a recommendation for mobile chargers for the Taycan? I have a Tesla wall charger on a 50 amp circuit in my garage and will buy a Teslatap for home charging. Now that the PMCC is not required, I did not spec it on my 4S and would like to have a mobile charger to keep in the car. Thanks.
