Paying with Shell

All electric vehicle (EV) drivers can use a Shell account to activate and pay with Ford Charge. To pay for your charge:
  1. Open the Shell App on your smartphone. The Shell App is available on:
  2. Locate the name of the charger you want to use. Look for the "Hello, my name is..." label.
  3. Locate the letter that corresponds to the connector you want to use (A or B) on the front of the charger.
  4. Follow the instructions provided in the Shell App to begin charging.
    Important: Never use a connector that appears damaged.
Your charging session should begin momentarily.

First, be sure to use the regular Shell app (for gas stations), *NOT* the Shell Recharge (for EV charging).

In the usual main screen, do *NOT* press the prominent Pay button on the bottom center (even though you want to pay for something, specifically, EV charging).

Instead, click the small fuel pump symbol on the top right (even though you're not pumping fuel).

Now you'll find yourself in what looks like the Shell Recharge app, but ... it's not.
Instead, it's just the, ah, um, Shell Recharge section of the Shell [not-Recharge] app.

This screen will display nearby Nearby Station(s), which will not actually include the Ford Charge station in front of which you're currently parked (and at which you're currently trying to charge).

Instead, click on the Locations button on the bottom left of the app.
That will take you to this screen.
Click on the usual gps location button on the bottom right, then you'll see the screen below -- be sure to DESELECT the Shell Recharge Only button in the middle top.
Now you can use the app to pay for Ford Charge!

As for the question, Why not just use your credit card? ...
... some PlugShare reviewers had reported that the credit card reader was working at only one of the three chargers, but that the Shell app could be used to pay at the other two.
The Ford Charge Response indicated as much.

However, when I called Ford Charge (888-357-1009) for app instructions (for which the rep was helpful, although got me only about halfway through), the rep verified that actually two of the chargers were entirely unconnected, and hence could not be paid for by any means, even by Ford drivers with Ford pass.

You can also see from the screen capture that all chargers are shown as unavailable, although though only the middle one (Hydro) was actually in use (one plug by me, and one plug by a woman in a Q8 with Vermont plates, who looked very cold and unhappy).

Meanwhile, in the alternative universe where commercial providers of goods and services want their goods and services to be purchased (i.e., as opposed to independently owned Ford dealerships who had public DCFC stations forced upon them by Ford and hence commit acts of commission by ICE'ing them and acts of omission by not doing anything about broken chargers) ...
... the gondola at Bretton Woods ski resort had broken down the prior afternoon.

Which is of no concern to me, since I was skinning up there anyway.
(Real backcountry skiing at Mt Washington across the road was a rather unattractive combination of cold, windy, icy, rocky.)

And which was not of that much concern to the lift-served skiers, since even with one high-speed chairlift not yet open for the season, the resort was still running three high-speed chairlifts without the gondola, and hence only the most minimal of liftlines.

But it was fixed overnight anyway.

I went through the Shell App motions at a Ford dealership with 4 plugs, but none were labeled, so I did a round robin with $75 card hold each try, and when I figured to which one I was plugged in, the charger gave me a Comm error, so I could not charge at all. I agree this is an awful way to do business when we non-Ford drivers are willing to pay in this case .85c/kWh and I would have paid whatever as my other option was to do a 1.5h roundtrip to the closest EA station.

I would like to know if anyone successfully charged at a Ford dealer? or a charging station where Shell App is required such as a Circle K? The reason I am asking is to find out if Taycans are compatible with these stations.

Confusingly, Ford is partnering with different providers.

I successfully charged at a EV Connect unit (though I had to call customer service to reset the unit)

I checked PlugShare to see if the two broken chargers had been fixed yet.
(Needed something to pass the time while warming up in the lodge after four skin/ski laps before using my nordic pass quota of one lift ride per day to take a gondola "victory" lap.)

The answer = obviously not.
But special bonus = the day after I charged at the one working charger on January 4, that too broke.
So all six plugs are broken at the Ford dealership, less than a year after they opened.
(Gotta love the PlugShare euphemism of Under Repair for the reality of In Desperate Need Of Repair.)
