Having seen some of the discussions about the EV charging at home, I researched how to reduce my rates the most. Here in NY, ConEdison has a program to give lowest rates ($0.0155/kWh) to those customers who install a second meter that is exclusively used to supply EV Power. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it?

$0.015/kWh certainly seems worth it - at 3 miles/kwh for the Taycan - that owuld mean cost per mile for electricity would be about $0.005/mile driven - vs. a gas car at $0.15/mile and with normal electricty rates closer to a $0.10/kwh leading to $0.03-$0.05 per mile...

1.5 cents per kWh is extordinarly cheap driving and almost a no brainer.

That is a crazy low rate. Continues to weep here in CA.

The cost for a separate meter here between installation, permits, inspection, can be as high as $2500. You just need to do the math to see where the break even is. Seems there also is a monthly charge at Coned of another $16 for the meter, so look at those costs and the taxes and whatever else they hit you with.

Whoa, thank you for that. Probably not going to do that...

It is worth checking out to get all the numbers. CA is really creative with charging for permits and inspections and permits for an inspection and inspection fees for a permit, and this is an installation for a luxury good, so I think maybe the rates are higher than if I needed a dryer outlet moved ;)

I don't know - if you think about driving over the next 10 years
  1. you're going to drive 120,000 miles (avg. 12,000 miles year)
  2. you're going to have more EV in your future not less
  3. $0.015/kWh is almost free - I'd go for it
  4. 120,000 miles is ~40,000 kWh of charging
  5. @ $0.015/kWh - that's a total fuel bill for 120,000 miles of $600
    1. less than most of the options on your Taycan
seem like a pretty sweet deal - especially when viewed from the fire capital of the world due to poor electrical grid planning that is California where the off peak rate is measured at like $0.18/kWh...

$0.015/kwh is effectively free driving - and make even solar power irrelevant

OK, I will look into it and let the group know.
