Good question. My car seem to have an internet connection without the phone being in the car. It doesn't connect to my house as a hot spot (tried but was told not possible), so I am not sure where it is getting its signal from. I have not purchased any data package....
The car has an unlimited data package with its own mobile card for the car functionalities. The data package is only for you to connect your smartphone to the car and use the cars internet on your phone or laptop (any device).

Got it. Then the internet radio has to be part of the car's basic functionality. :)

OK well......more research needed after a year of ownership :(.
Lots of discussion on this a while back on the other board and my take-away was.....the WiFi hotspot was basically non-functional…..except for minor things such as synching the calendar and reaching Porsche Connect.

Apparently the WiFi connection between the Taycan and the iPhone is required to use Apple CarPlay. I'll find out when I get WMA5 loaded on my MY20.
@Tay Tay said, "Both wifi and bluetooth are bidirectional communication protocols. Wifi has greater bandwidth so is required for things that are more data intensive (like wireless Apple Carplay)." https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/what-is-the-pcm-hotspot-for-anyway.2200/post-30554

Any updates on this topic?

I have just got my car and use Internet radio a lot.

I don't have an iPhone or use Apple carplay.

On day 1, I somehow managed to search for and get an Internet station I use a lot, but no idea if it was from the car or via my phone (mobile data / Bluetooth?).

I couldn't save the station. And havent been able to repeat it since, while sat in the car at home trying to set things up.

So basically, does the car allow access to Internet radio (in the UK) without purchasing any additional data package?

Yes correct - your phone or additional data package for the car is not required for car functions (and radio services) which require internet connectivity - uses its own LTE service.

Data package is only there to enable Internet sharing to non-cell enabled devices - e.g. tablets - via the car's WiFi hotspot - you do not need this (you can share your phone's package via it's hotspot function if ever needed).

In your media settings you have Internet Stations (globe) and DAB (Antennae) as shown below

Would it use the same functionality which allows it to pick up GPS signals? ... Limited cellular?

I moved from Tesla to Taycan Turbo S. Great move. But... on my Tesla I had a ton of internet radio stations that I liked, and I can’t find over half of them on the Taycan even tho on my computer at home i can find them all. Anyone knows if it’s my car or the Taycan internet radio sucks in general....? (Not talking about XM, talking internet online radio)
After a year of this....

- internet radio is not dependent on your cell phone, it is built in into your Taycan
- You don't need to buy a data plan to use it
- it is not Sirius XM, iHeart radio, Apple play or Android play or any third party app
- it is a tuner for radio stations that transmit through internet from all over the world.
- Tesla has it and it gets a lot, A LOT more stations than Porsche does, no idea why.
- You can't ask Siri to tune a station as it is unrelated to your phone
- I have not been able to get Hey Porsche to do anything other than normal radio
- I have been able to set my favorite stations from Rome, Frankfurt and Mallorca/Barcelona through the Taycan Internet Radio
- But I am missing a few from elsewhere in US (like my favorite station in San Juan). They show up on Tesla and they show up on my computer but they don't show up on the Taycan and no one knows why.
- I can use my cell phone, Car Play and the internet from the phone to find the station but that defeats the purpose and I have to pull over to tune in on the cell phone browser or on an app, which is stupid.

Net, my original question, a year later, is still unresolved. Why can't I listen to the same internet stations I listened to on my Tesla and I listen to on my computer. Why?

How did you have it. in mine bought it 3 days ago internet radio is grey out I have only xm radio and normal radio . Even if in connect the subscription is showed but I can’t listen or select internet radio or Apple Music which I did sync with my account.... any walk around ? Thanks
You probably do not have internet connectivity. Check to see if the LTE icon is present on the upper right hand portion of the screen. Are you getting traffic information?

I believe that not all internet radio services are equivalent. There are differing providers for Internet Radio. We are stuck with the service Porsche has contracted with. I was able to find most, but not all of my favorite stations, too. It is a minor problem given all the other options for listening.

Yes I do. I have weather, news, traffic, and I DO have internet radio. I just don’t have all the stations I can get on my computer or the Tesla.

Yes they are. There is only one internet. You either access the internet and whomever puts their radio stations there will show up or you don’t access the internet. There is no such thing as accessing internet lite. ☺ Internet radio is not a service. It is basically a tuner that picks up whatever is broadcasted on the internet. Drive a Tesla. Try it out. ☺
