Hi all,
First post! Thought I'd make it a *hopefully* helpful one since I searched far and wide for some insights into the wiring for this install and ended up just figuring it out myself. Obviously you're responsible for not frying your own car or yourself. I'm just passing along a narrative of my experience.
I am installing a Uniden R7 radar detector using this MirrorTap, and this Blendmount. Also, I found these trim tools to be extremely helpful, although you could likely make due with a credit card or something non-marring to start the prying. Be gentle and patient.
You need to remove two trim pieces to get at the mirror harness. The first one is relatively easy. I used a very thin trim tool and pried down across the whole rear seam (highlighted in red). There is a rubber retaining strap which is easy to remove and get this out of the way.
The second trim piece is the small piece that covers the rear side of the mirror stem. It's more difficult and very tempting to force something and break tabs. There are instructions elsewhere to remove this, basically you squeeze the sides (where the arrow is) to release it. This also has a red string retainer which must be released to remove this trim piece. Its wrapped around a plastic hook, the string can slide out of the hook towards the drivers side.
This is the target harness partially unplugged. I needed to gently pinch it with needle nosed pliers and it released immediately.
The plug has only three wires. The upper row are the 12V (outer) and ground (inner). The views below are the top view of the plug (easiest place to verify with a multimeter), and the front of the plug.
Now that this is all understood, you need to insert the taps of the MirrorTap into the back of this plug. Perhaps obviously, the black goes to the ground location and the red goes to the 12V location. This does require some force and wiggling, but not massive force or pliers. I found that these taps only slid in BELOW the existing wires rather than on any other side...
You're basically done. As instructed by the MirrorTap instructions, zip tie the tap to the existing wiring to prevent it from pulling out. Reassemble the trim, and decide where you want the cable to come out. I chose the lower right corner of the trim piece, it's pretty clean and there is enough space to have the trim still mate nicely.
Enjoy!
