OK - results are in :)

Want ahead and tested the voltage and amperage from the rear (specifically the fast ) charging USB-C plugs and compared to the USB-C slots in the cubby of the console .

Bottomline is they are essentially identical which TBH surprised me! So yes the console multi-function ports appear to offer the same level of change capability as the rear dedicated charging ports.

Voltage/amperage fluctuates for example between having the iPhone awake vs asleep and even then to some degree in either state.

It is true that the highest amperage I briefly saw was in the rear at ca 1.5 A but the front reach 1.4+A too. Voltages from front and rear are essentially the same and varied from 5.15 to 5.19 averaging about 5.17 v.

Some pics (obviously with iPhone active) - when put to sleep mode the voltage and amperages decrease in both sets of ports.

Here is an example from one of the front console usb-c ports again with iPhone attached, charging and awake

And here is an example again with iPhone attached, charging and awake from the rear seat charging usb-c port:

Thank you, that's very interesting. I had hopes Porsche would have supplied QC3 or better type charging but I guess it's limited to 5V only according to your measurements.

Thanks!

Yeah these v/A's are more than sufficient for me as TBH I just don't use the car to (primary) charge and a slow top up in the car is just fine for my everyday use - main reason for a mag holder in a more convenient loc. for me was to avoid mucking with that ridiculous console lid :)!

Surprised too. In my experience the in-console USB-Cs were not as effective/powerful as those in the back seat. I'll try it again now that you've gotten these measurements. Thanks.

Hmm... unless... the measurement device doesn't allow for the ports to switch into QC/WC mode? I heard some people commenting that the back ports would charge the phone really fast... Can the measuring device deal with 6,9,10,12 volts?

Yes it can measure from 3 to 30 volts and 0-5.1 A

Specs for this usb voltmeter are as follows:

My solution cost me ca $55 (OEM ashtray) + $14 (mag mount) to have this modified Porsche ash tray now storage insert that retains the cupholder lighting - bought my OEM insert back in Nov 2021 - just looked on Suncoast and that same insert is now $65(!!), but still essentially same price as other options here it seems.

This solution is perfect if all you want is a holder (more work to convert to a charger) i.e. I do not interact with my phone whilst driving - others may need to and more upright holders probably preferred. My iPhone 13 Pro sits perfectly edge to edge with the black top of the console :)

The cool thing about this mod is that you are not mucking with any part of your car with clamps etc and of course the cupholder pops right out should you actually need to revert to a cupholder vs a mag mount-storage.

I cleaned out the interior of the ashtray parts to make a full usable storage bin - and the mag mount is simply secured to the lid (via modded hole) with the screw nob it came with i.e. can be swapped out with any other 3rd party mag and/or charger mount.

PIC 1: Porsche's ashtray cupholder right for the Taycan (and other models) - my modded version on left with black mag mount:

IMG_7029.jpeg

PIC 2: Interior of ashtray is not usable space other than for ash/cig butts - I cleaned out mine of those parts and now usable storage.

Which Magafe charger did you use? It seems like the cable goes down?

I used a 90 degree tiny usb3 plug adapter to rout it down - if you look at the pic below you'll see the adapter at about 1 o'clock on the charger - not by car right now but can take a better pic later - end result looks very neat and OEM to my eye.

Thanks to @ciaranob and his help, I have copied his solution with the ashtray. For now I just leave the cable outside, I was afraid to open the whole part to hide the cable. I wished Porsche would have done something similar. Also as ciaranob mentioned, you still have some room for stuff inside the ashtray.

I really like the nine-volt.com offering as it's more elegant that the 3D-printer solution previously mentioned by me (& others) on this thread. I particularly like that the color rings still show up. Price seems very fair.

The one trade-off is that for the 3-D printer solutions (at least the one I have) it's very quick & easy to remove and reclaim the front cupholder in case of need.

My removable converted ashtray holder now a fully functioning charge pad and storage device with completely hidden usb-c power cord routed back to console hatch.

Finished installed pics - my converted ashtray holder storage for house keys etc:

Part 1 - removing the rear cupholder assembly - I actually used a trim/removal tool to pop the first retaining clip on the front cup holder with far less effort than using thumbs/fingers as suggested elsewhere.

I can simply pull either OEM ashtray cup (modded or unmodified) out and use as such if desired - again the whole point of this mod retaining all original functionality - the wire to the charger just unplugs - that said I never have open or closed cups in my cup holders - literally never.

I tried many solutions (including ashtray) but finally went for the following :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0912GR7CK/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it sticks with double tape, cable (6ft / 1.8m) runs from the in-console port. It is hardly noticeable when empty, at the same height of the other screens, doesn’t block the vent, and easy to interact with the phone with the left hand (i’m left handed). I can have the phone up or down with 2 magnets inside the case.

Got my GTS and wanted to try something different on this car since I didn't want a clip on the racetex.

Similar to the Nine Volt solution, except wanted it to look OEM. I lose a cupholder but never used it anyways.

Modeled a base that slides into the cupholder, then glued a magsafe charger into a cover piece that was wrapped in a matching piece of Racetex. In a future iteration I'll make this a snap in piece instead of glued like it is now, my Racetex wrapping skills suck too.

Overall happy with it, looks OEM, almost like a palm rest, but then just rest my phone on it without it sliding around everywhere. While still retaining the OEM glow ring.

Attached are pics of it, what it looks like before I wrapped it, and a closeup of the glow ring (excuse the bad Racetex wrap job).
