According to this announcement today there might be some hope that we get a PCM update for the pre facelift Taycan and some nice new features:

New PCM feature: YouTube integration in four further model lines

09/12/2024

Even more convenient media enjoyment in PCM: YouTube is now included as standard in all Porsche 911, Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan models that support in-car video. The video platform enhances the driving experience, especially on longer journeys.

Porsche Taycan New PCM feature: YouTube integration for J1.2 Taycan ... maybe hope for pre facelift J1 Taycan? thumbnail

Porsche is expanding the entertainment options offered by Porsche Communication Management (PCM) in four further model lines. YouTube, the world's most-used video platform, is now available as standard in the 911, Taycan, Cayenne and Panamera, following its successful launch in the all-electric Macan. In newly configured vehicles, users have access to the video portal from the moment they take delivery of their vehicle. Existing vehicles that have already been delivered and have in-car video functionality can be retrofitted free of charge via a software update.

Porsche is thus offering its customers access to YouTube in its vehicles. Depending on the model series and equipment, streaming is possible for the front passenger either while driving or during driving breaks. YouTube is seamlessly integrated into the PCM via the in-car video function.

YouTube offers an almost inexhaustible range of entertainment and educational content. This means that travellers can get inspiration for a stopover along the way, for example at a place of interest or a restaurant along the route. Those who prefer a dynamic detour can access tips on inspiring routes. The portal also contains helpful videos to help understand the functions of Porsche vehicles, for example Porsche's own tutorial series ‘Spot on’.

YouTube also offers direct access to weather reports, news and other information on current events in the local area. The streaming service is not just for entertainment. Rather, it provides another almost unlimited source of knowledge directly in the PCM. YouTube works free of charge in the PCM with no prior registration. After optional login with a personal YouTube account, users can directly access individual recommendations, subscribed channels or stored favourites.

All compatible Porsche models play YouTube content on the central display of the PCM when the car is stationary. This makes productive and entertaining use of charging breaks in electrically powered vehicles. A passenger display is optionally available for the Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan model lines. It is designed so that it cannot be seen from the driver's seat and does not distract the driver. This means that passengers can also enjoy YouTube content while the car is in motion. This comprehensive entertainment system makes long journeys in two- and four-door Porsche sports cars even more entertaining. The Porsche becomes a mobile multimedia hub.

Porsche forgot about the pre facelift J1, I don't think we will see any updates but my PCM seems stable.

I tend to agree with you. I am just hoping I am wrong.

Unlikely, we will get this update. I assume 2025 model has faster processor that enables video. Not sure it would run on earlier models. Loved this feature on my 2022 model x. I would definitely pay for an update should it become available as an option.

I could not think of anything more useless than having YouTube on my PCM (sorry).

An utterly irrelevant addition to any vehicle IMHO.

Yes, and no.

It would allow for me to use youtube music / playlists. It would also enable listening to the many podcasts that are only on youtube. It would also enable listening to the many content creators that are also only on youtube.

I for one, would love it.

Quick reminder for those who don't know: Your iPhone has YouTube... with soundtrack thru your Taycan's PCM. If you get bored while charging, just pick up your phone. And you know what? Any other streaming app or game works too! Pretty amazing!:bandit:

For me the good news if there was a PCM update for the J1.1 is not YouTube, it would be that they did some development for that plattform. Could not care less about YouTube.

IMO they should focus their obviously constrained software resources on making the current software more reliable, as well as think through and improve the UX design. Maybe add interesting safety features like Teslas recent feature to block door opening if there is a car coming from behind. Simple, useful, increases safety. But, those are boring features harder to implement because they require integration with a car (vs. just porting the YouTube app to run in a docker container on PCM - no interaction with the car other than screen). Next up, Tetris on PCM, with more games coming soon (just more tablet apps copied from Android ecosystem). The simpler way of course would have been to just provide an HDMI input and let people connect their own devices to the PCM screen (enabled while parked on main screen, passenger screen that cannot be seen from the driver's side always enabled). Want console games, connect your PS4 or Xbox. Want YouTube, connect your phone, tablet, freedom of choice. Heck, provide a cubby with power, cooling and HDMI jack where you can store your device of choice semi-permanently.

Yes. Provide configurability, information, let me put the parameters i want where i want them in some kind of advanced mode, with configurable instrument tiles. HUD, instrument panel, PCM and the MyPorsche app. Simple for dummies, powerful for advanced users.

Sorry, none of this for me. Certainly not anything that gets between my hand and opening the door. Why would anyone in their right mind want to play Tetris on the PCM ? This feels like an infectious disease whose patient zero is Tesla. This is everything that is wrong with the gimmickifation of BEVs, and the Porsche brand should take an inflexible stance against any of this garbage.

Everyone is free to do what they want on their phone, why force this on a car ?

This is why features like this can be turned off, no different than stability control if you don't want anything between your foot and applying proportional motor power.

Beats me, but some people evidently like it. That said, Tesla thinks through their UX, unlike the traditional car makers. For example, why do I need an ON/OFF button for my EV? In a Tesla "it just works" when you get in or out of the car. In a Taycan sometimes it kind of works (e.g. PCM does not unlock if a passenger gets in while the driver is loading the trunk), the car status in the phone app can be trusted (unlike the Taycan), you can easily set target battery SoC, even the charging speed maximums, etc, etc. Most importantly Tesla has functional over the air updates, which Porsche still requires an overnight dealer visit for. I saw this review of VW's brand new model:

To me it illustrates the traditional carmaker's approach to software. I will say it again though, Porsche is actually better than its VWAG siblings. My wife has an Audi, it's even more moronic UX without any rhyme or reason, other than perhaps they just hired the lowest bidder where the coders just put checkmarks next to features on a list, but none of them have ever sat in the car they work on.

For safety reasons – I don't think they'll bring video to any car that doesn't have the "privacy" filter over the screen that stops the driver from being able to view it.

They bring it to the 911 which lacks that screen and option. I have hopes it will come to us peasants with the j1. My passenger display already is able to play video from USB, and it pauses nicely when I start driving
