Porsche Taycan 4S Arrives At U.S. Dealers

April 17, 2020

Atlanta, Georgia. Today marks the introduction of an exciting new addition to the Taycan model line, as the new 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S joins the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S at dealerships in preparation for customer deliveries.

Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of PCNA commented: “The new Taycan 4S sits right at the heart of our electrified model line-up, delivering the effortless performance and engaging dynamics expected of a Porsche sports car with the space and connectivity that make it viable for everyday use. Even in these challenging times, it is a credit to our dealers that they have developed innovative ways to support our customers. This means the first of the Taycan 4S’s to arrive here in the US will be delivered by our dealers to awaiting customers in the coming days.”

The jurors of the World Car of the Year Awards agreed, by giving the Taycan two awards, a first for Porsche: ‘World Performance Car of the Year’ and ‘World Luxury Car of the Year.’

Powering the Taycan 4S is the 93.4-kWh Performance Battery Plus that allow its dual motors to generate up to 562 hp (420kW) using its overboost function and when launch control is activated. When configured in this way, it can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Its top track speed is 155 mph, made possible through its two-speed gearbox.

The EPA estimated range for the Taycan 4S is 203 miles. Supplemental third party range testing conducted by AMCI will be available on our web site.

The Taycan was unveiled in September of 2019 and the global debut of the Taycan 4S, and subsequent media launch followed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Customers can, in states where it’s feasible to do so, collect their cars in person, or if required (or preferred) receive their new Taycan via contactless home delivery – providing customers with access to new cars without leaving the house. This is part of the innovative ‘Porsche at Your Service’ program, designed to assist customers with greater flexibility and convenience when it comes to online sales, vehicle collection and delivery as well as servicing.

Designed and engineered from the ground up by a new team at Porsche, and built in a completely new factory located in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the Taycan represents a bold and innovative step in Porsche’s investment in electrification.

But that is also the exact same range as the Turbo S with the 21 inch wheels. Sounds odd.
Well, it is for the Performance Battery, but with the 19" wheels. Add the 20", and it's probably modestly more, but who knows. EPA's cert. is not yet on their website. I assume they also used the Performance Battery.

Prior to today, I was able to find the application for certification submitted by Porsche (no longer available online). They used the same two test results that were submitted with the application for the Turbo and Turbo S. Btw, both these tests showed 295.3 and 281.1 miles of range and were adjusted by an arbitrary 70% factor that someone else on this forum previously explained. It appears that to calculate the 4S range, adjustments were made using the other two vehicles and differences between rolling coefficients that I couldn't understand and lacked explanation as to the reasons for the differences. Maybe this makes sense to somebody else?

I think EPA would have to have the performance battery, it's all they ship to America.
The EPA value is just the Porsche value with the 30% derating that they do by default.

California Rates Taycan 4S. For those interested in range "estimates" the California Air Resources Board (CARB) rated the Taycan 4S at having a range of 289.7 miles. HOWEVER, like the EPA, CARB uses a Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) for its range estimates. Which means it really hasn't driven any miles under actual roadway and extreme environmental conditions. This leaves a lot of environmental and traffic conditions that can adversely affect range such as extreme's of cold and hot weather requiring high usage of the HVAC system, and terrain such as hills/mountains. Also, as with the EPA "estimated" range, I assume that the CARB UDDS tests start out at 100% charge, and may take the charge down to 0%. I live in Tucson AZ where the summer temperatures often exceed 110F, we have some mountainous terrain between Tucson and a favorite place such as Las Vegas NV. Additionally, the cars along this route average 70-80 mph. To complicate the Can I Get There From Here problem, there is currently a shortage of 50kW charging stations along the I-10/US 95 route to Vegas, particularly between the 205 mile stretch from Blythe CA to Las Vegas. This makes for an 80% to 5% charge range of 230-250 miles a necessity with full A/C to avoid being stranded literally in the middle of nowhere (aka between Searchlight and Boulder City NV). I am still waiting for someone to prove that they can drive at 75 mph from Tucson or Phoenix AZ, in 110F+ weather to Las Vegas in a Taycan 4S with the 93.4kW Performance Plus battery. A 50kW charging station in Needles CA would make it possible for what may be the 200 mile range Taycans and even Audi eTrons under these extreme conditions to make this trip without charge anxiety.

Well, since a few of the 4S only just arrived in the US this week, and I don't think Tuscon temps are yet at 110F yet, and the 4S probably aren't showing up in any volume in AZ or NV (since they aren't CARB states) until October or so when the temps will be lower, you probably will have a really long wait.

Reg,
You are right not likely to see someone in a 4S do it. HOWEVER, I would like to see ANY Taycan make the trip from Tucson/Phoenix to Las Vegas this summer to prove that it Can Get There From Here even in the extreme's of summer, on an 80% recharge, and the lack of a 50kW charging station between Blythe CA and Henderson/Las Vegas. All it would take is a dealership in Tucson or Phoenix AZ or in Las Vegas NV to drive the I-10/US95/I-11/I-515 route or reverse, on a 110F degree day in June/July/August at 75mph even Eco Plus HVAC setting (Range mode) to prove it can be done, even once. Such is the challenge.

Since they are selling all the cars they get, I doubt any dealer would take the time and effort for such a trip.
I would agree, the best you can hope for is another 4S customer with an early delivery slot from Tucson with a hankering for good buffets. ;)
And maybe a few other extracurricular activities.
