Porsche electric sport sound YES/NO?

Is electric sport sound a worthy option?

Previously: 914, 944 and 997 911S. Now Taycan
Country flag
I never understood this, it does not affect performance, safety, or comfort. I had a friend who paid more to have his BMW M3 make more noise. I thought that dumb too.

I do miss the growl of my 911S, but that was natural and did not cost extra.

Obviously there are others that feel differently and, since I own stock in Porsche, I say go for it.

I wouldn't be without it, sport sound gives me a bit more of a fighting chance of getting out of my drive without a bicycle or jogger getting embedded in my front wing as they hurtle past the blind exit. I can just touch the (programmable) diamond button on the dash to turn it off when I'm safely out.

My understanding is that without sport sound optioned the Taycan still emits sound at low speeds to warn pedestrians. This video apparently shows it:

Here’s an interesting article: https://thenextweb.com/news/we-ranked-the-best-and-worst-ev-pedestrian-warning-noises
Yes, as has been discussed, all EVs in the UK and many other jurisdictions are mandated by legislation to emit a low speed sound to warn pedestrians... With sport sound enabled the Taycan is simply louder and much more obvious to those pedestrians/cyclists etc. and, in my case at least, makes getting out of my drive a much safer affair.

I was on the fence about ordering it, but I found the almost perfect Taycan at my dealer, and it came with the package. We’ve had 5 Hybrid vehicles, 3 Porsches, 2 MBs. They were all driven on total electric 60%+ of their lives. I had so many instances of people walking right in front of my car, at 5 MPH, because they don’t pay attention to anything but the sound. Blowing a horn is a no-no! But the Sound is ”polite” enough and they are aware from a decent distance that a car is approaching. I have it set in the “individual“ position on the much discussed steering wheel knob, so I can turn it on in a second without looking or stretching, as I have a torn right rotator cuff. “They” notice it. Besides, once this is factory ordered, Porsche could update it’s capabilities someday. I not sure this can be added later. Beep Beep.

Why not? I'll blow the horn anytime - beats someone hitting my car! Vast majority of people walking through parking lots don't hear the "sound" anyway. :swear::rolleyes:

That's defenately NOT the Sport Sound nor the standard sound of the Taycan.
It sounds like an upgraded sound imho.

Here's mine:

Before I walked in for a test drive I was dead set against the sport sound. I've owned two other EVs and both made only the barest whispers at low speed as required by local safety legislation. I have always been leery of the artificial sound in modern sports cars because it seemed like pointless theatrics for nostalgic people that couldn't let go of the past.

Much to the SA's disappointment I insisted on doing most of the test drive of a 4S without the sports sound. On the way back to the dealership the SA convinced me to give it a go and, much to my surprise and dismay… I actually liked it.

At an intellectual level I _know_ that it's an artificial sound but driving this car is not an intellectual exercise. It's all about _feeling_. Throwing this car around a backroad is emotional (only way to explain the grin). The sport sound added something to the experience that my head couldn't understand and my heart never knew it wanted.

I ordered the Sport Sound on my 4S CT and I'm hoping my head can forgive my heart when it arrives.

I'm getting a buzzing/static noise that increases and decreases in volume in tandem with sport sound volume. Has anyone else experienced this?

It reminds of the times when the music CD was introduced and some people preferred vinyl because it had authentic imperfections in the audio that made the music more real.
Or people that continued to use analog photographs in photo clubs because of the imperfections of the analog photo process.

Now you see the same: People are used to the fact that car make a lot of noise. So the want to keep it. Especially the enthousiasts.
But in the longer run all music specialist and photo club members also moved to digital. Because it was simply better. The imperfections do not have character, they are just plain disadvantages of the product.

I am strongly convinced the same will happen with fake electric car noises: in the longer run everybody will switch to silent cars and don't understand why anyone would add something that adds a disadvantage (making unnecessary noise) to a product.

I found sports sound useful and I put it on a diamond button on dashboard, so I can turn it on with one click... when I'm closing to the area with wild animals.
With Night vision, I've often seen deer, running away.

I think this question can't be answered by others.
What if everyone likes yellow? Would you pick yellow as the color of your car?
Just go test drive one with Sport Sound and if you like it, buy it.
If you don't like it, still buy it, in case you regret it.
Just like music, it's too personal to give you any opinion.
I love it though.
I think this the only answer. It's like when people ask what color to choose, how can any one of us make the decision?

Because opinions, I’ll add mine. Before the PEC day I was not going to order sports sound. The I took to the track and it’s just really useful: either as an actual reference point or frankly, just for fun and to bring a smile. Because as well as buying the car for serious-ish reasons, I bought the car to have fun in.
Now with the car IRL I’ve found it useful at slow speeds in crowded car parks because without it the volume is much lower and people just don’t notice you because the pedestrian sound isn’t very loud. I will also use it once summer comes when I’m ‘getting on it’ on some good roads and again because it’s fun and adds an element to the car.

I do leave/ turn it off in normal driving because it is a little irritating over longer periods.
