Well I see a rather hopeful video on Taycan 4S range test in Germany by the somewhat little known "The Autobahn Specialist".

I have watched most of it though understand none. Read and translated the comments. The math seems correct but I don't know how to gauge the driver or the route.

Maybe a German speaking forum member can contribute their feedback??? I know that the comparison was done with respect to a Tesla P85 but I am not trying to bring up that debate, just that Bjorn Nyland's test was tried on the Taycan which seems reasonable.

Here are comments in English:

I drove both cars in perfect conditions. 16 degrees. No wind.
Driven route 130 km Munich to Oberau to Munich on A95

Consumption Munich Autobahn start to Shell Oberau: 16.1 kW per 100 km
Consumption Shell Oberau to Munich Sendling: 14.1 KW per 100 km

Average 15.1 KW per 100 km

Total route traveled on this day: Augsburg Munich (130 km / h)
(30 km city traffic) / Straßlach / Munich Sendling / Oberau / Munich Sendling / range test / Landsberg / Augsburg

Odometer reading early 1580 km State of Charge 91%
Odometer reading at the end of 1992 km State of Charge 18%

Distance traveled 412 km

City traffic 30 km,
Range test 130 km at 90 km / h
Mixed highway operation 252 km (60 to 130 km / h)

20 inch winter wheels (2.9 bar)

Porsche KM range according to display: 373 km Here tipical range 23.3 KW per 100 km charging time 0 to 80% (hypercharger or similar): 22 minutes

That is really odd that it is so different. Interestingly, the range test is at 90kmh which if I remember right is still in the “first gear”. People speculated that the difference in other non-epa tests was due to the efficiency of the “second gear”

Paging all German speakers! Is there something that is missing or some caveats about this?

Thanks for finding this Ron, you always manage to find interesting things!

My understanding is that first gear is only used during launch control for the additional boost. Second is the primary gear which the Taycan will use while driving normally.

This is correct. You have to mash it to get it to use 1st gear.

The first half, he is driving Taycan but only either praises the Porsche center he borrowed the Taycan from or how much much he likes his MSP85D. The rest of the video is virus and politics... :)

The gist of it is: On a sunny day 16°C (61°F) he managed to drive the Taycan 4S+ in Range Mode - almost all of it on highway - with 90 km/h (56 mph) top speed consuming 15.1 KW per 100 km. He used the SoC battery from 91% - 18% and drove 412 km (256 miles). That would push the range to a calculated 576 km (358 miles).

He did say that EPA is rubbish.

No, it's the selected drive mode that determines if 1st gear is used (Sport and Sport Plus).
2nd gear is used in Normal and Range mode.

About the vid:
Average 15kW/100km seems very good...

I'm not sure your statement is accurate. Yes, 1st gear is used in Sport and Sport Plus, but only during launch control and possibly if you're doing 20 and push the accelerator to the floor. Otherwise, even in those modes 2nd gear will be active during normal driving.

I don't think LC is available in Sport mode.
In Sport and Sport Plus second gear is only used after 100kph (60mph).

"A newly developed, automatically switching two-speed transmission on the rear axle ensures noticeably improved dynamics. The extremely short-ratio first gear benefits initial acceleration, while the long-ratio second gear holds acceleration reserves for high-speed manoeuvres." - Taycan Brochure

"The Porsche's gearbox has a single planetary gearset and two clutches that handle the ratio swap or decouple the rear motor altogether, allowing for efficient running using only front-axle power. The gearing step is large, with the second-gear ratio roughly half of the first and the shift point happening around 50 mph. In most driving, the Taycan runs in top gear. First-gear starts happen in Sport or Sport Plus mode; to do it in Normal, you'll need a large accelerator input." - Car and Driver https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28903274/porsche-taycan-transmission/

My belief is that even with Sport [Plus] mode the car will still use second gear if leisurely pulling out, and I don't think it'll use first gear if I'm driving consistently at 40 mph.

Point is, you don't want to be in first gear when you're driving 40mph constantly, it's less efficient.
Still, I didn't know it shifts to 1st if you step on the accelerator hard in normal mode.
Nice! :)

Thanks, that was very useful.
But maybe back to the main point of this thread, the crazy range here.

What do we think of this?

You have to know that above 90kph the wind resistance is playing a big factor and will increase exponentially.
So, driving at a constant speed below 90 gets you the best out of an EV.
Still, a Tesla is slightly more efficient but only just.
This is the huge advantage of a gearbox, one for (repeatable) ridiculous accelerations and one for range.
The Perfect EV if you ask me...
