This was new to me... they made prototype electric Boxsters back in 2011:

So apparently they've been looking at EVs for a good while...
That's totally Right!
The first actual "Porsche" cars were Hybrids and EV's back in 1900 (called Lohner Porsche).
So, electrified type of driving is a topic, which was more or less part of the companies history.
It really began with the first hybrids (GT3-R) in the Motorsport market and went from there to the series model to now the first complete EV car: the Taycan.

What most people don't know or not think about in this rEVolution is the fact that brushless electric motors is AT LEAST as important as new battery technology!

They are way more efficient (especially when brushed motors get old and burned) and long lasting than brushed motors. And powerful. And quiet.

I'be been doing RC car racing all my life, and we're always early to embrace new technology. The shift to brushless motors was a BIG improvement as we wore out the brushes on the brushed motors very quickly.

Then we moved from NiMH batteries to LiPo. The combination of LiPo and brushless gave us power and runtime like never before. And less weight.

Furthermore we used very advanced charging methods for NiCad and NiMH batteries. For Lithium batteries it's a very simple method.

Most people have no idea a lot of their household appliances have moved from brushed to brushless motors.

I also do 3D heli flying - here we've moved towards higher voltage (like in the Taycan) many years ago. It gives the same or more power but with less heat. And you can use thinner wires. A real win-win also.

Exactly and when you increase the voltage you reduce also the size and the weight of the motor:) , There seems also to be interessting developpement for the future to have battery with capacity up to 1000 Wh in developpement (meaning a weight of 90kg for a 90 kWh battery), see following post

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Porsche say pretty recently that they have a major battery technological upgrade in line for 2020? So maybe there will be a v1 Taycan that will be released either late 2019 or early 2020 and then a v2 type of Taycan for late 2020 or early 2012 that has new battery technology?
