Hi there,

Please forgive me if this is in any way obvious but I want to have the facility to simply have the car charge between 0030-0430 when at home to take advantage of Octopus GO. Everything seems to be predicated on minimum charging levels and, even when I select preferred charging times, mess around with minimum levels etc, so as not to have optimised charging selected it just starts charging straight away. I’ve got no general Profile active and direct charging is de-selected. The EVSE is an Indra Smart Pro (frankly, an oxymoron given the unfriendliness of the web app it uses).

For example, I’ve just set it up to start in a 4 hour window at 1500 (typing this at 1520) and to charge from 61% to 70%, so should be well within the capabilities of a single phase 32 amp EVSE to achieve a 9% uplift yet the minute I sent this profile to the car (at around 1430) it started charging.

The same happens if I set the charging schedule on the EVSE app. Can it really be beyond the possible just to have a simple setup which says start charging at time A and end charging at time B. The whole thing feels far too clever for its’ own good frankly and it’s driving me mad.

My wife’s Fiat 500e is doing the same too so it’s not unique to Taycan.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Use a timer set to your target charge (say 85% for example) with a departure time of 4:30. Turn off climate settings (unless you also leave at 4:30). You do not need a profile, so just turn that off.

A couple of notes:

My comments are for the settings in the car. I don’t know about other setting that may be available on the EVSE.

The car will always charge to 25% min no matter what as soon as you plug in. No way around that.

If the car needs to start earlier than 00:30 to get to the target charge setting, it will start earlier. No way around that (other than ways to make it continue charging after 4:30, which doesn’t help you).

If you use a profile, it will charge to that set min immediately.

If you use preferred times, it will try to charge to either 100% or your timer target charge (if set) during the preferred times.

There’s a charging calculator below you can play with to see the expected charging profiles of different settings.

Thank you Jeremy,

I’ll give that a whirl. Every day’s a school day….

You should be able to do it very easily. I do it with Octopus Go and it works well.

My advice....
Don't use any setting on the EVSE (charger).
Let the car manage it all.
So make the charger 'dumb'...just provides the leccy as and when the car tells it.

Think of it like having a Timer on the plug on a TV recorder - which you want to record something at midnight.
Don't mess about with a Timer on the plug - let it just provide the power and let the TV box manage everything else.

I have mine set to Octopus cheap time with a charge of 85%.
So any tine the cars state of charge is above 50-55%, it should manage it all within the 4 hours.

Its really simple once you know how. First off delete all current profiles and timers set in the PCM. Ensure they are also removed from your App (they should auto sync).

Remove any programming in your EVSE / charger as this will confuse the car. The car controls the charging and not the other way around.

The following is my daily timer and a locational based profile (called Home). This guarantees a minimum charge of 25% (if your battery is at 20% then it will charge immediately until 25% is reached and then pauses waiting on the timer and will ignore otherwise) and a daily charge of 85% between the hours set.

I would recommend a minimum charge level which is 25% to allow sufficient time to charge to your desired level within the time window set.

The car will charge to a 25% min without the profile.

Also, the 4-hour window is only good for about about 30-35% charge (for their EVSE). OP will have to plug in around 50-55% to stay within their charging window, as noted by @Fish Fingers

Let us know how you get on and what (hopefully) works.

It will then help others in the future who find the thread.

I use Octopus go tariff in the UK with 4h low cost 5p between 12:30 and 4:30. My use case is to only change during this period even if it is over multiple evenings, I tend to use most range over the weekend which has informed my set-up. I tend to get 29% in this window (we have two chargers that load balance). I have seen some threads changing changing %. The approach I came to was:

Charging profile at Home:

Minimum change 25%
Preferred Charging Time 12:30 to 04:30

A single timer:

Friday only 8am i.e. does not repeat every day
85% charge

When I plug in on a Sunday, for instance, if less than 25% will charge immediately to 25%
Sunday evening will charge only in the window 12:30-04:30 [to c. 54% for me] then stop
Monday evening will charge only in the window 12:30-04:30 [83% for me] then stop
Tuesday evening will charge only in the window 12:30-04:30 [85% for me] then stop
Car charges no further (I have 22 model 4sCT)

Clearly if I use the car on any week day a bit more changing will take place. The one time this approach will charge outside of the 4h window is of plugged in on a Thursday evening will less than 56% charge if will change outside of the changing window to get to 85% at 8am Friday morning.

This is really 'doing what is says on the tin' which is charge my car to 85% by 8am Friday morning with a the 4h window preference. I have seen in other threads other are looking to do something similar.
