We went to a wedding in Baltimore last night. Given the somewhat rough reputation of downtown Baltimore where our hotel was (I apologize for my prejudice as the environment turned out to be quite lovely), I planned for my wife and I to drive down from Princeton in her ICE BMW. However, a couple of hours before we were supposed to leave and my wife realized that we were not going to take the Taycan, she became very angry with my childish scratches&worse-phobia. She stated that it is just a car and that its silent gliding would make for a more comfortable journey down the highway than with her BMW. Knowing that any pushback from my side would have been futile, I rushed into my garage to try and top up the battery as much as possible before we had to leave. At the departure deadline, we left with an SoC of 95% and a guess-o-meter-projected a range of 329 miles in Range Mode and 326 miles in Normal mode. The extrapolated range in Range mode at 100% SoC would therefore have been 346 miles , or an extra 17 miles.
Porsche Taycan Range mode carries a 4S 330 miles (531 km) on the highway in the summer 11jul2021

We drove to Baltimore yesterday Saturday and covered a distance of 148 miles and came back today Sunday, covering 151 miles (slightly different route), for a total trip distance of 299 miles (481 km). Upon our return, there were a projected 14 miles left in the battery. Since @epirali correctly suggested to use actual miles traveled as a better base to calculate real-life range purely on guess-o-meter extrapolations, I would state that the range with a fully charged battery under these conditions would be 330 miles (531 km) which is 14 miles left after the trip (projected) plus 299 miles driven (actual) plus 17 miles covering the 95%-to-100% SoC (projected).

Of the 299 miles driven, more than 275 were highway. The outside temperature on both days was around 30C/86F and the battery temperature hovered around 33C/91F most of the time. It was dry and there was no wind. On the highway, I kept the speed in the 75-80 mph band going to Baltimore and in the 70-75 mph band coming back. The A/C was in Eco mode and set to 19.5C/67F both ways with the front seats' ventilation being on at max capacity going and being off coming back. I forgot to check it yesterday but today's 151 miles journey back logged 26.3 kWh/100mi (16.3 kWh/100km) in the trip computer. Extrapolating that measurement, assuming that the useable battery capacity is 83.7 kWh, projects a total range of 318 miles (512 km) under these conditions, or slightly less than the 330 miles measured. This suggests again that the battery's real capacity may be slightly higher (86-87 kWh?) than 83.7 kWh.

My wife is the opposite. I was told we can’t drive the car out to my Mom’s house (140 miles away) because she has a gravel driveway and it might scratch the car…?

my Guess is that you are right. After the software update my range went up a lot. Guessometer is consistently above 300 and as high as 330.

What I love about the guessometer of the car is how accurate it is. Drove about 200 miles one way and compared the google maps data to the cars display. As long as I wasn’t going too crazy, the miles went down steadily just like on google maps.

Why does everyone always refer to it as a “guessometer”? Is there something that I missed? It seems much more accurate than my Macan, which sometimes tells me it has over 600 miles of range (ha…silly Macan…no you don’t…).

Let's call it the know-o-meter then...

"Guess-o-Meter" isn't a Taycan-specific term; I've been driving a variety of EVs for the last nine years or so and that's just the term of art. I expect it started because some early commercial EVs like the Nissan Leaf weren't particularly accurate in range projection, and some were just convenient fictions, like my Fisker Karma that dutifully reported "50 Miles" of EV range on a full charge, which would fall rapidly as the actual range would be anywhere between 35 and 45 miles depending on conditions.

Wow, 26.3 kWh/100mi (16.3 kWh/100km) going 70-75 mph (~115km/h) with AC is really low, that is excellent! I am not sure, If I get it that low!

For some reason, you keep forgetting, that the car is not yours... :giggle:

I give you another 6 months and you have a Taycan, too...

Because their math (voltage * const = range) did not quite check out? ;)

@Kingske I think you are right that the useable battery capacity could be a little higher than the stated 83.7 kWh or at least the SOC reported by the software is is a bit of a moving target. I got these readings which shows the time spent at 100% SOC appears to be temperature dependent.

Time spend at Indicated 100% SOC. Target speed was 71.5 mph.

Minutes into tripAir Temp ~15.8FAir Temp ~36FAir Temp ~53FAir Temp ~69F
0100100100100
2100100100100
49810098100
6979797100
8969797100
10959696100
1294959598

When the air temp was ~69F it took more than 10 minutes for the battery SOC to drop below 100%. I remember wondering at the time if something was broken but ended with a 300 mile range test.

I think the high tire pressure may be an important contributor. Sometimes I wonder whether it is too high...
