Stupid question about unplugging cables

So, when I read the manual (haven't had a walk-through yet), it says to remove any charging cable, just press and hold the button, wait for the white light, and then remove. You only need to push the button on the car when it won't release. However, no matter what, I always seem to have to push the button on the car. Is this true for everyone?
