Good morning! Heading to the airport to spend a few days with friends in Maui. Had a lovely time in Monterey with friends.

And, on the way to the airport, I stopped for a 20 minute electron fix. As long as I am passing a 350kW station... I may as well top up.

This morning, even after driving 30 minutes, the Nav hasn’t yet remembered it is in an EV, so it wants to lead me to gas stations. Sigh. Worse, it wouldn’t pre-condition the battery to accept a fast charge.

Workaround: I was “forced” to put the car in Sport-Plus mode and do sprints. Accelerate very hard. Brake hard. Go very fast. Brake hard. Each sprint raised the battery temp by about 2°F. Wasteful but fun.

Charging rate: between 101 and 149kW.

I really hope they upload a new software version of the navigation to seamlessly integrate changing stations in the US and pre conditioning. I also wonder what processor chip set they have in the infotainment system? Such a basic needed feature should not have been skimped out on. As I have said here before its not a "our first EV build from the ground up" build if you are looting the ICE navigation OS from the spare parts bin...Come on Porsche you can do it!

I have heard that if you accelerate fast enough the dirt falls off by itself...
If you drive it through a snowstorm it also cleans itself.

It would be interesting to note how much the "vampire drain" will be when you leave it at the airport.
Currently at 68%, 150 mile estimated range.

I’m hoping that by the time all of you take delivery, this bug is fixed. I’m doing this for all of you!
Even better would be fixed before my road trip is done. <hint, hint>

It’s good to be home again. Aloha, Maui.

The tunnel was closed (something about whales and leaks) so I had to fly.

My mom and I went for a hike in Point Lobos State Reserve. It is probably my favorite park in California. If I had to pick just one. Luckily, I don’t, because there are many wonderful parks here.

If you enjoy seafood and don't mind splurging for a really great meal, my favorite seafood restaurant on the planet is Mama's Fish House in Paia.

Yes. Mama’s is excellent.

I also love the food truck poke behind the 76 station, 3’s Cafe for their breakfasts, and Sensei Sushi. Lots of great food on the island.

Hi Don. Hope you're having fun in Maui. I was there this summer and it was a blast. I just thought I would let you know that your adventure is part of a research paper I am writing for my Masters Degree. It's a paper on EV Public Charging Infrastructure. Thanks for all the good info so far.

Forgot to ask if you had a lot of serious elevation changes in your ride through canada and how that affected range? Looking at a trip through Utah and Nevada.

Aloha!

Yes, there were big elevation changes. It does have an effect on range, but it’s not huge. And the Nav knows about it when it plans Charging stops.

I don’t have specific data on the effect, just basic “uphill takes more juice; downhill takes less”. I never worried about it.

I don’t think it is as capable as the latest Tesla Full Self Driving but I think it has the hardware to be close to early 2015 Mobile Eye version. ie lane keeping, traffic aware cruise control. But I’ll take your word for it since you’ve been able to try both.
I can vouch that Tesla AP1 was/is far superior to the LKA that I ordered on my 2018 Macan GTS. I was disappointed in the LKA ability in my Macan (not the car itself, just that specific feature). I'm on my 2nd Tesla that now has AP3, but as someone else stated I would be completely happy with a car that had the ability to compete with Tesla AP1 (very effective lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control).

I have some experience with Tesla AP, and the Taycan InnoDrive is definitely is that league but not as “you can do whatever you want” in that it won’t let you just let go. But its ability to hold the road, follow cars, and even prepare for maneuvers while nav is on is very good imo.
