Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan

08/23/2019

Porsche is entering a new era with the new Taycan and the brand’s first all-electric sports car is setting standards in interior design.

Porsche Taycan Press Release: Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan! Taycan-Interior-Dashboard2

Classic design features have been reinterpreted and brought into the digital age. “Less is more applies here too,” explains Ivo van Hulten, Director Interior Design Style Porsche at Porsche AG. “The Taycan interior combines design elements typical for the brand with a new type of user experience, and impresses with its simple elegance.” Porsche will present the Taycan to a worldwide audience in September 2019.

Typical Porsche: a dashboard designed for drivers and a sporty seating position

The original 911's cleanly styled dashboard from 1963 was the inspiration. The stated goal was to bring it into the present day. The cockpit signals the start of a new era with its clear structure and a completely new construction. It is clearly driver-focused. The instrument panel has a clean, minimalist and ultra-modern design, and operating the controls is quick and free from distractions. The free-standing, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. It is clearly focused towards the driver and ensures that everything that's needed for driving is in view.

The innovative instrument cluster consists of a curved 16.8-inch screen with the rounded look that's typical of Porsche. A cowl has been omitted, which ensures a slim and modern appearance in the style of high-quality smartphones and tablets. Real glass and a vapour-deposited, polarising filter give anti-reflective properties.

Porsche Taycan Press Release: Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan! Taycan-Interior-Dashboard1

Drivers can choose between four display modes for the instrument cluster:

  • Classic mode (power meter) evokes the rounded instruments typical of Porsche. This display delivers information that's clearly arranged information, allowing for fast readability. A power meter replaces the rev counter in the middle instrument.
  • Map mode replaces the central power meter with a map layout.
  • Full Map mode intentionally omits the round instruments in favour of a navigation map displayed across the full display.
  • The Pure mode displays only essential driving information such as speed, traffic signs and navigation using a minimalist arrow.
There are also small, touch-control fields at the edges of the screen for operating the light and chassis functions. The instrument cluster is therefore wider than the steering wheel and reminiscent of the iconic original 911.

The steering wheel has a light appearance, with two models to choose from. In addition to the basic version, which can be customised with coloured inserts as part of the accent package, Porsche also offers a GT sports steering wheel option. It has a distinctive design with visible screw heads and features a typical Porsche round mode switch which can be used to select the various driving modes.

The upper and lower sections of the dashboard stretch across the entire width of the vehicle in the shape of a wing. A central 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look, thereby blending in visually with the interior.

All user interfaces have been completely re-designed for the Taycan. The number of traditional hardware controls, such as switches and buttons, have been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – via touch operation or a voice control function that responds to the command “Hey Porsche”.

All vehicle configurations for the Taycan, such as Porsche Active Stability Management (PASM), can easily be set up on the central screen via direct access. The driver can quickly access all apps via a clearly structured and customisable home screen. Apps include navigation, telephone, media, comfort and Porsche Connect. With optimised voice control, drivers can access the required function even faster. For the first time, front passengers in the Taycan have the option of their own touch display, allowing them to easily alter settings without distracting the driver.

The elevated centre console intensifies the feeling of a low seating position, as you would expect from a Porsche. It features a large 8.4-inch touch panel with haptic feedback. This allows the air-conditioning settings to be altered directly. Integrated handwriting recognition also allows quick address inputs.

Every detail has been reduced to the essentials. Like the Porsche 918, the Taycan has a compact direction selector switch in the instrument panel instead of the classic selector lever. This gives the centre console a tidy look and creates storage space. A reduction to the essentials and a clear approach are also evident for the air vents. These have been fully modernised and can be operated intuitively. Traditional, mechanically-operated louvres belong to the past, as airflows are now controlled both digitally and fully automatically ("Virtual Airflow Control"). By clicking the Climate menu, it is possible to switch between “Focused” for fast, directional cooling and “Diffused” for draught-free air conditioning. If the optional four-zone automatic climate control system (“Advanced Climate Control”) has been ordered, an additional 5.9-inch touch control panel with haptic feedback allows the system to be operated from the rear seats.

A wide range of personalisation options and innovative material concepts

The Taycan’s colour and material design allows for individualised equipment, from traditional through to sustainable and modern. There is also the option of classic leather as well as the sustainably tanned Club Leather “OLEA”, which uses olive leaves in the tanning process. The natural quality of the leather is accentuated by means of a special cloud print. A new feature is the fully leather-free interior with state-of-the-art surface textures. “Race-Tex” material is used, a high-quality microfibre material partially consisting of recycled polyester fibres. Its production has 80 percent less CO2 than traditional materials. The floor covering uses the recycled fibre “Econyl®”, which is made from, among other things, recycled fishing nets.

The Taycan is available with a wide range of interior and exterior configurations, in both traditional and modern styles. Interior accents and trims underline the attention to detail, while meeting the highest quality standards typical of Porsche in terms of material characteristics and workmanship. Interior colours Black-Lime Beige, Blackberry, Atacama Beige and Meranti Brown are exclusively available for the Taycan. The optional interior accent package also gives customers a choice of special contrasting colour schemes in black matt, dark silver or neodyme, an elegant champagne tone. The doors and centre consoles can be wood trim, matt carbon, embossed aluminium or fabric.

In addition to the host of innovations, there is another detail that no Porsche should be without. Similar to the ignition lock on conventional Porsche models, the power button is located on the left behind the steering wheel.

Porsche has taken the wraps off of the interior of the all-new, all-electric Porsche Taycan ahead of its world debut September 4. Gone are the buttons and the clutter. This is a minimalist and sleek interior for the modern digital age.

Porsche released Thursday several images of the interior. Earlier this week, TechCrunch was among numerous media outlets that got an up close view of the interior (along with some other things we can’t talk about) and a chance to play around with the infotainment system.

Porsche didn’t just slap a bunch of screens in and call it a day. Here are the inside details and what stood out.

911 design lines
At first glance, the dashboard might give viewers a twinge of deja vu. And they wouldn’t be wrong.

Designers used the dashboard from the 1963 Porsche 911 as inspiration. And that’s evident in the pictures below, which shows a clean and sleek dashboard.

The 911 DNA is evident. But this isn’t some throwback. This is a modern vehicle with its own design story, which includes horizontal digital screens that are sandwiched between the upper and lower dash lines and stretch all the way over to the passenger seat.
Porsche Taycan Press Release: Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan! Taycan_Interior-2

The elevated center console stretches down from the horizontal central screen to two air vents that are not the mechanically-operated louvres found most vehicles today. Instead, the direction of the airflow is controlled digitally via an 8.4-inch touch panel that is located just below the central screen. This touch panel houses the climate control system and includes a track pad with haptic feedback. The trackpad can also be used for quick address inputs.

Tucked under the touch panel is a small flat space to place a wallet or phone. Two cups holders and then a storage unit, which is equipped with wireless charging and two USB ports, completes the center console.

Porsche’s design team repeatedly talked to TechCrunch about the emphasis on the driver. And that shows. (The design team worked on the interface alone for 3.5 years.) Although there are plenty of passenger features here as well. From the driver’s seat, everything is in reach and without constantly looking over to the center display. Natural voice integration courtesy of Nuance is activated by a “Hey Porsche” trigger or simply pressing the voice button on the central display or dedicated button on the steering wheel.

The minimalist design continues to the all-digital instrument cluster. This free-standing panel, which houses the instrument cluster, has a slight curve to it. Interestingly, it doesn’t have the standard cowl or lip that is often used to prevent reflection. Instead, Porsche used glass coated with a vapor-deposited, polarizing filter.

Porsche Taycan Press Release: Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan! Taycan_Interior-2
The digital instrument cluster is the highest point of the dashboard in the Porsche Taycan.

The Instrument Cluster
Inside the 16.8-inch cluster display, the driver will see three round instruments that display information. Drivers can customize what each of these instruments displays. Drivers can also remove the information for a more streamlined look in “pure mode.”

This pure mode displays only essential information such as speed, navigation or traffic sign recognition (so you know what the speed limit is). Pure mode, which manages to give the interior an even more minimalist look, could be a handy and fun feature for a Taycan owner on track day.

Perhaps one of the most functional features is the map mode. The map replaces the central power meter in this mode. But it really becomes useful when “full map mode” is turned on, which extends the map across the full display. TechCrunch wasn’t allowed to take photos of the interior during its visit to Porsche North America headquarters, so readers will have to imagine it a digital map taking up most of the instrument cluster.

Finally, just to the left and right of the main instrument cluster, drivers will see small, touch-control fields at the edges of the screen for operating the light and chassis functions. One of these buttons is a trigger key, which lets drivers customize what it operates.

A piece of a Porsche 918
Scanning the interior, it becomes quickly obvious that the classic transmission shift selector lever is not in the center console. Looking to the right of the steering wheel and in the instrument, is a compact transmission shift switch — the same used in the Porsche 918.

All The Screens
The Porsche Taycan has several screens. Oh, so many screens. Beyond the digital instrument cluster is a horizontal 10.9-central display. Directly below this is a tilted screen that houses climate control as well as a digital track pad that gives haptic feedback.

From the central screen and moving to the right, is a display for the passenger. The passenger display cannot be turned on if the driver is the only one in the vehicle, according to Oliver Fritz, director of driver experience at Porsche.

Porsche is experimenting with streaming video on the passenger display. This likely won’t be available when Porsche begins delivery before the end of the year. But could be rolled out in future over-the-air software updates. For now, the company is testing technology that would prevent the driver from being able to view the screen. Fritz emphasized that this idea was still in testing and Porsche won’t roll out streaming video unless it’s sure the driver cannot see the screen.

Dark Mode
Porsche designers have made “dark mode” the default in the instrument cluster and rest of the infotainment system. That can be changed to a white background, Porsche said. TechCrunch doesn’t recommend that though. The dark mode, and the ability to turn off the central 10.9-inch infotainment display and optional passenger one, should let drivers enjoy the road and escape the annoying “blue light” that is emanates from so many vehicles these days.

Interior colors and leather-free options
Porsche will offer a number of color combinations in the interior, including an all-black matte look, which TechCrunch viewed. The company’s design team didn’t reveal the total number of interior color combinations, but they did list a few. There will be four exclusive interior colors for the Taycan, a black-lime beige, blackberry, Atacama beige and Meranti brown. An optional interior accent package will include black matte, dark silver or neodyme, which is like a champagne gold color.

The doors and center consoles can have wood trim, matte carbon, embossed aluminum or fabric.

The company is also offering a leather-free trim interior, which includes the steering wheel. Once such material is called “Race-Tex,” a microfiber material partially consisting of recycled polyester fibers. The floor covering uses the recycled fiber “Econyl,” which is made from recycled fishing nets, among other things, Porsche said.

Porsche designer Thorsten Klein was careful not to call it vegan. He told TechCrunch that even synthetic materials can be treated using animal products. Porsche is pushing to source materials that don’t use these processes, but until then the company won’t use the vegan term.

Today, Porsche uses a process called “OLEA” for tanning the leather used in the Taycan. This process uses olive leaves.

Apple Music and more
Earlier this week, Porsche announced it will integrate Apple Music into the Taycan, the first time the music streaming service has been offered as a standalone app within a vehicle.

But Apple Music is just one of the many features in the infotainment system. The user interface is laid out to always show three main buttons: home, vehicle and messages. The messages feature lists notifications coming into the vehicle. The voice feature can also be used to read these messages out loud.

Other buttons on the central screen include navigation, phone, settings, climate, news, calendar, charging information, weather and Homelink, which can be used to open the owner’s garage door.

See you in Five. Let me see the pics and read all the stuff.

1. It has 4 screens
For the Taycan, owners will feast their eyes on four available screens in the interior. To start, Taycan has an all digital instrument cluster that measures out at 16.8-inches. The driver will get 3 classic gauges that are customizable with the steering wheel controls. Along the side of the instrument cluster are touch-sensitive buttons.

Next to the instrument cluster is a 10.9-inch high definition centre touch screen for the infotainment system. You will be able to configure up to 3 features on the screen such as the map, your music and a list of your recent phone calls. If not, you can select one feature to fill the entire screen. Along the left side of the display are three touch-sensitive buttons for the home screen, car settings, and notifications. The car settings button allows you to access things like comfort or trip settings while the notifications button allows you to check things like missed calls, navigation updates, and service messages from the car.

On the centre console is an 8.4-inch touch screen that serves two main functions. The top half of the screen is where you’ll be able to control the air conditioning settings, while the bottom half of the screen is a trackpad for the infotainment system. The track pad includes a handwriting function and haptic feedback.

Last, but certainly not least, is an optional second 10.9-inch touch screen (previewed in the Mission E concept) that the passenger can control independently from the driver. Placed beside the centre screen, it allows the passenger to take over as DJ while the map is open on the centre screen. The passenger can also go through the navigation system and add additional stops or change the destination for the driver on long trips.

The only difference between the passenger and centre screens is that the passenger screen only comes with the home button and not the car settings or notifications button. It also can only be activated when someone is sitting in the passenger seat.

2. It has a voice assistant
For the Taycan Porsche is debuting a new voice assistant (think Siri or Alexa) that allows the driver to make changes while driving. To activate the assistant say “Hey Porsche,” followed by your command. It’s important to point out that won’t be able to change safety settings with voice control.

3. You can’t physically move the vents
The Taycan comes with an advanced climate control system that uses electronically controlled air vents – meaning you can’t just fiddle with them with your hands. You will have the choice between two pre-settings (focused or diffused) or and individual setting that allows you to adjust the airflow using the touch screen.

4. It doesn’t have a lot of buttons
Porsche Taycan Press Release: Digital, clear, sustainable: the interior of the new Porsche Taycan! Cayenne-Coupe-interior-679x424

For the interior, Porsche stated that their goal for the Taycan was to achieve “digital simplification.” As a result, there are not a lot of buttons inside compared to previous Porsches – like in the Cayene Coupe’s interior pictured above. For each of the available screens there are only a handful of touch-sensitive buttons to use. Most of the controls are done using the touch screens.

5. Transmission shifter has moved
Owners of the Taycan are going to have to get used to the the idea that the transmission shifter is no longer on the center console. Instead it will be up on the dashboard behind the steering wheel.

6. It has 5 drive modes
From what we can see in the latest interior photo from Porsche, the Taycan will come with five different drive modes: Range, Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual. We’re prevented from telling you any more about them (or about what they feel like) until Sept 4th.

7. It always tells you where the nearest charging station is
As a way to help people deal with range anxiety, the GPS will constantly let you know where the nearest charging station is as you make your way to your destination. For long rides, it will include charge time as part of your total trip time.

8. It comes with a new gen steering wheel
Porsche is introducing a new steering wheel generation for the Taycan. There will also be an optional sport steering wheel available as well.

9. It has available leatherette upholstery
For those who want a more environmentally friendly alternative to leather seats, Porsche has you covered. The Taycan will have a leatherette upholstery option called RaceTex. Of course, traditional leather will also be available.

10. The floor mats are green
The Taycan’s floor mats will be made from partially recycled materials. Not the color green.

11. 3 different seat options
There will be 3 different types of seats available for the Taycan. Customers will have the choice between standard, comfort, or sport seats.

12. The interior can comfortably seat people in the back
Depending on how the driver and passenger like their seat settings up front, getting into the back of the Taycan can be a tight squeeze (although that’s coming from someone who’s 6’3”). But once you’re inside, passengers 6’3” and under should be able to sit comfortably thanks to Porsche’s foot garages.

13. It has “dark mode”
Well not actually, we just made that name up. It’s called “reduced mode” and it turns off all of the displays in the instrument cluster except for the speed.

14. It also has “Cockpit mode”
If you get a Taycan with the optional passenger touch screen, passengers will have the option of seeing how fast you’re going on their side in “Cockpit mode”. That said, having your driving partner know how fast you’re going might be a reason NOT to get this particular option.

15. Foot garages!
To make the Taycan as comfortable as possible for passengers, Porsche has developed foot garages for the rear seats. The foot garages are indents on the floor where a piece of the battery would normally be that provide additional leg room.

16. Apple Music
The Taycan will be the first vehicle to be fully integrated with Apple Music. Apple Music Subscribers will be able to stream their favourite music (50 million available tracks and plenty of curated playlists) on the go without using their phones.

17. Driving position similar to a 911
Keeping true to its racing pedigree, Porsche has designed the seating position of the Taycan to give you the same feeling as the 911.

18. There’s an optional 5th screen
We almost forgot! If four screens weren’t enough, there is a fifth screen available in the Taycan. For the rear passengers there is an optional 5.9-inch screen for rear climate control.

As for the rest of the car, check back on September 4th when we’re allowed to reveal all the juicy details like horsepower and 0-60 times.

I think the range indicator is purposely misleading with the posted figures.

Who cares about the range indicator!

I Love the Interior. Fantastic.

Interesting. From the sketches,it appears the seats are a mix between cross turismo and the 992 sport seats. Tought it was going to be 992 seats.

Another interesting thing is they talk about a new generation steering wheel. Cant wait to see it.

I’m not so happy about the idea of a stalk shifter. Tesla does it this way. I which they stuck to a 992 style shift paddle in the center console....

Looks pretty sweet overall though!

Love the look of the interior. While I appreciate the "green" approaches, it's a bit over the top for me. Just let me order my leather interior, and I'll buy some carbon footprint exchanges as penance!

All in all, I'm very happy to see this and looking forward to being able to order mine!
