We checked out of our hotel and headed to Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen – a trip of less than three kilometres. We're familiar with the area – and it's traffic – and are soon parked up in the underground car park.

And plugged in for a 11 kW charge – with the car at around 39% battery state-of-charge it would be five hours before its full – which is fine as we're expecting to be here that long.

On walking up to ground level – we see some faux Porsche police – really "site safety" officers.

To where the original factory was and where Porsche Factory Collection now takes place – alongside some dedicated Exclusive Manufaktur dedicated configuration advice and individualisation. We lament that we're not able to collect our Turbo S here in the future – as its not open to UK/Ireland cars at the moment.

In fact the entire place looks like it might be undergoing maintenance/construction.

We then went on the to our Taycan factory tour – to both the main assembly building and the paint shop. We want to do a proper write up of our experience here – so that will be a dedicated post later.

Afterwards, it's time for some (non-alcoholic) drinks and food at Christophorus – the restaurant within the Porsche Museum building.

We head to Heidlebourg – our over night stop tonight. Where the underground car park has an industrial socket on a pillar.

This is the perfect scenario – and reason why we pack our Juice Booster Travel EVSE with us. We select the appropriate 3-phase adapter and plug in – immediately getting 10.5 kW of power.

This is one of those situations where we'll leave our hotel tomorrow with an unexpected full charge – because of our travel kit.

I was about to ask... Yes please, let us know if they eventually found some of those batteries. Even better: get one of them and send it to me via priority mail before boarding in Calais...
I had a message from my dealer tonight, informing me that my Taycan that was built this week is missing the 12V battery.

Taycan Factory Tour: Introduction

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-08 at 23.11.01

The Taycan Factory Tour starts in the lobby of the Porsche Museum and will visit both the Taycan Assembly Line and the Taycan Paint Shop. No personal belongings (bags, cameras, phones, etc) are allowed on the tour and there are lockers available to store these items before you start.

You are given an ear-piece connected to an android phone running an app – to help you hear your tour guide as they walk around. We found it fairly useless and you couldn't hear through it very well – and we quickly gave up on it. However, our group was small – around 12 people total – and we had no issue hearing the guide just by standing near them.

Everyone else on our tour – except for the two of us – were Porsche employees or from suppliers – mostly from Singapore.

Taycan Factory Tour: Assembly Line

After a quick briefing we walked as a group across the round-about to the Taycan Assembly Line – where most of the tour takes place. On walking through the employee check-in gates – the first thing you get a sense of – is tons of forklifts taking parts off of trucks and racing them into warehouses. It's a hive of activity and you best stick to the paths and painted walkways!

As we walk deeper into the grounds – before reaching the assembly building – you can see 911's and Taycan's fresh off the assembly line being driven onto waiting trucks to be taken to either storage area's or loaded onto trains. You can tell the employee's driving these are having fun – especially the odd roar of a GT3 or the recent 911 Sports Classic that we saw being driven by.

We enter the assembly building – where we are given a brief talk about the building size, number of robots, employees, etc.

We then take an elevator – that's big enough to fit the entire group – up to the second floor of the building and enter the assembly area.

Inside the door you are in a "mini-warehouse" area – where parts that are going to be used immediately are stored. What we see is a guy using a forklift taking fully pre-assembled dashboard's down from high shelving and placing them onto a transport robot. The robot then runs along a pre-determined route to the exact assembly station that requires that part for installation.

The robots follow a plastic strip of QR codes along the ground – and we walk alongside them. If you get in the way of one – they stop and wait for you to get out of the way. There is nothing separating you from these robots anywhere on the assembly floors.

We follow the general direction the transport robots are heading – towards the main assembly line. Before we reach it – we pass a group of around 20 workers that look like they are doing some training on the battery/electric motor assembly. We continue on to the first station of the assembly.

Here the newly painted bodies that have come in along the nearly kilometre long (for real it is exactly 911 meters long) bridge from the paint shop – arrive at the assembly building for the first assembly task. Which is installing the orange high-voltage cables – clipping it along various parts of the body and the manual or electric charge ports are installed here also.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.12.00

We walk along the line – about 1.5 meters away from the workers – who mingle along with us. This is way closer – and less separated than we were expecting. There are tons of stations and the guide does not stop at most of them. What we see is forklifts or transport robots running alongside where we are walking – we often have to get out of their way – as they drop off parts to the stations. This seemed continuous – at each station you don't see more than perhaps six parts waiting installation. Most stations have a little less than three minutes work doing their task – so the inventory waiting at each station must need almost continuous replenishing.

The seat installing station might have eight seats waiting to be installed – two cars worth.

As we walk down the line we try and take stock of what the big picture is. Here are some random things we noticed:
  • There are tons of different coloured cars on the line. While often we see many black/white, maybe chalk cars out on the road – the colours coming down the line seem much more colourful.
  • We see a PTS mint green Taycan – first time our guide has seen this colour too.
  • It seems like 20% of the cars on the line today are the various "berry" colours: Frozen Berry, Frozen Blue, Coffee Beige – these colours are popular.
  • Neptune Blue is a colour close to our heart – very, very rare in Ireland – we saw at least ten Neptune's on the line of maybe 100-ish cars. Its popular too!
  • It felt like there were more "estate" variants on the line than salon.
  • Most Turbo S's that we saw had the black calliper option picked on the carbon ceramic brakes. The default yellow was rare enough on the line today. We're looking forward to ours.
  • We tried to determine Europe vs US spec cars – from the type of charge port plug – we saw installed. The vast majority on the line are Europe – we only saw a tiny fraction with the US style charge port.
We stop at the robot that installs the glass on the cars. It is one of the few places that is covered by perplex walls to protect people from the moving robots. The robots are from ABB and we can see on a display beside them the code they are running. As both of us are software engineers – we found that fascinating. It looked like a relatively high-level and simple (almost BASIC like) language. The screen was showing a CASE statement with two options and had tons of GOTO's within each CASE branch. Uugh, this looks a little 1970s!

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.07.24

The robot isn't doing anything and we wait as a group for a few minutes to see it do its thing. It is then we notice that the entire line has stopped. The guide decides to continue the tour.

We move onto an area of the tour where lots of the interior and exterior parts are being installed.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.04.44

We are free to see all the parts boxes at each station to see how things arrive there and are fitted to the car. We see fully assembled centre consoles in a wide range of leathers and trim colours waiting to be installed. It is fascinating to see all the variations and how accurately they match the correct car as it arrives at a station.

It is then that we notice that most staff are mostly hanging around and the line isn't moving. The robots we left behind – that we can see – still aren't doing anything. For the last 30 minutes we're on the assembly line – it doesn't move. We quietly ask one of the staff on our tour (not the guide) and they let us know that the line has stopped due to parts shortage.

We then walk to part of the assembly line where the cars are in fairly completed state – battery installed – wheels on – and they are are hanging from robots above us.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.09.55

We are free to walk under them – and its my first view of what a completed Taycan looks like from underneath. They are completely flat – with almost nothing sticking out – not even the suspension sticks out vey much and these are fully down as they are hanging over us being pulled by gravity.

We notice a lot of different brands of tyres on each car – we even see Hankook that we didn't realise was NF0 rated. It is then we notice a healthy 5% of cars on the line have the basic 19" wheels on them.

It's fascinating to see the car's raise up and down, or rotate up to 110 degrees – to help workers assemble their parts. Any part greater than 8 kg has some robot assisting workers carry, place and fit it for health and safety reasons.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.05.44

It is at this point of the tour – when we're starting to get "used" to the place – we notice two aspects that no picture can show:
  • There is no unique or special smell here – no smell of oil, rubber or even a "new car" smell.
  • The place is very quiet – even when the line was moving. Its normal office volume here. We mention this – again to one of the employees on the tour – and they explain to us that a big reason for this – is there are no pneumatic/air tools used on Taycan – they are all electric. This is to reduce noise and energy usage – no need to keep compressors running.
We then walk back to the mini-warehouse area and walking down the stairs to the floor below. This floor feels similar – but cars are in a more completed state here. It also has the mini-warehouse inside the door and robots are transporting parts to assembly stations.

The first station we see on this floor – is the marriage – where the body and engine/battery assembly are joined together – completely by robots with 52 bolts. We again wait a brief time to see if we can see a marriage occur – but the line remains stopped.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.09.00

We walk over to some large transport robots – each one carrying a Taycan battery. One is a performance battery and another is a performance plus – with the additional modules. We see the "foot garages" and the battery management system that sits on top – very clearly.

The area of the battery looks massive – no wonder the Taycan is the size that it is! We are amused that each battery has the same "Li-Ion – don't throw in bin" sticker that a normal AA-Duracell has on them!

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 19.59.49

We then walk over to a white "rig" which is where the front assembly (motor, gearbox, AC & DC chargers), the battery packs we saw earlier and the rear assembly (motors, gearbox, inverters) are placed on using manually operated cranes and bolted together.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.01.11

This activity is continuing even while the wider line is halted. We notice a box of 22 kW AC chargers waiting to be installed – all with Made in Ireland stickers on them – the months we sometimes had waiting for those!

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.01.49

We continue down the line – looking at front crash protection assemblies being installed.

Towards the end of this floor – we can see Taycan's with all their lights on – these are alive!

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 20.03.57

We strain to see if we can see 12-volt batteries in them – and its difficult to make out. What we do see is jumper leads attached to each positive and negative posts and running up to a device that is travelling with each car providing 12-volt power. We've no clue is this normal or powering the car in the absence of a battery. We suspect that it is normal – as we did see plenty of Taycan's fresh off the line being driven towards transport trucks as we were walking into the building.

A lot of of the line in this area has break-out areas beside various stations. Some are rest/snack areas - but others have white-boards and plenty of folks were working on these – looking like engineers and assembly leaders working together on various issues.

This looks so much more like an office than a factory.

We leave the assembly line building and walk as a group back the way we came – 911s and Taycan's with their transport protection – being driven everywhere – back to the Porsche Museum to catch buses to the Taycan Paint Shop

(to be continued)

I think most software engineers would be grossed out by what’s considered standard in industrial controls. 🤮

That's an awesome summation of your experience. You might've seen my GTS on the line too! It's definitely on my bucket list to visit Porsche HQ in Germany. Thank you for the post!

Is that Oslo blue colour not an option for your new car? Would surely be perfect to have the only one!!!

Day 15: Heidelberg (Germany) -> Luxembourg City (Luxembourg)

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 Screenshot 2022-09-09 at 15.35.06

A short planned transit day today – which is just as well.

On Wednesday when we were in Friedrichshafen – I got stung by a wasp on the left thumb – while paying for parking at the pay console. It was sore that evening and by the next morning, it was starting to show signs of swelling. As we had a busy day planned at Porsche, I used plasters from our first-aid kit in the hopes that would help it heal. However, it remained very sore throughout the day – only kept at bay with some pain killers.

Overnight it got a lot worse and this morning we could no longer ignore it – as it had swelled to a huge amount (gross looking – not going to share picture – uugh!). So first thing this morning at 8am we went to the nearest hospital emergency room at University Hospital Heidelberg – which also happens to be one of the largest hospital centre's in Germany.

It took us a while to find the correct building – but we eventually found block 410 – and registered as a patient. This is where the cross-border treatment capabilities of the European Union kick in – all EU citizens are entitled to emergency treatment in every EU country – the same as local residents – provided that the procedure can't wait until you return home.

The Irish health service (called the Health Service Executive - HSE) quickly approved the procedure – meaning that while there would be no cost to me for treatment – German tax payers will also be reimbursed by Ireland – so they aren't out of pocket either.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 52345519204_d6c84779e3_o

I'm given a ticket number – and sit in the waiting room – to be called. Which happens within three minutes of sitting down – very efficient.

After talking to the practice doctor – it becomes apparent that a small procedure is required to cut and drain the abscess that has formed.

A surgeon is requested and the operation is performed immediately under local anaesthetic alongside a tetanus vaccine – which I haven't received in a long time.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 52345535884_30ef8bc779_o

And I'm sent on my way. Driving is a little difficult but not impossible – so happily we'll be able to continue our trip as planned – though I'm glad that this happened in the final part.

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 52345476158_ef0e6253a3_o

We input our hotel in Luxembourg into the PCM and start heading north and west along the motorway. Compared to recent legs – it's all fairly unexciting stuff – which is just what we want today!

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Alps 18-day road trip 2022 52344280027_11872c656c_o

It's so bad that most of the Taycan's sensors give up! Really makes you wonder how will full autonomous driving be achieved – if adverse conditions can render sensors so blind?

Our original plan was to charge at IONITY near Metz – but we realise our hotel tonight is offering EV charging if you take them up on their valet parking – and as this IONITY station is our least favourite – we decide along the route to take it out and just head straight for Luxembourg.

We cross into France.

And point the car in a northerly direction.

And cross over the seamless border with Luxembourg – our third country in an hour.

And quickly find our hotel – parking on the street outside – until valet can move it to the charger.

As my hand recovers – I might be a little slower than usual with updates – and also want to finish out my commentary at the Porsche Taycan Paint Shop yesterday.

The days charging stats:

<At time of writing – car has not yet been placed on a charger>

Today we did 280 km over 4:35 hours, with an average speed of 62 km/h, consuming 21.8 kWh/100km.

Day 15: Heidelberg (Germany) -> Luxembourg City (Luxembourg)

And I'm sent on my way. Driving is a little difficult but not impossible – so happily we'll be able to continue our trip as planned – though I'm glad that this happened in the final part.

We input our hotel in Luxembourg into the PCM and start heading north and west along the motorway. Compared to recent legs – it's all fairly unexciting stuff – which is just what we want today!

Ouch!

Remember 'Top Gear Rules' apply here, last man standing and all that...this forum NEEDs you to complete this epic trip!

BTW, ought you not get a LHD TTS given you spend a considerable amount of your time on the wrong side of the road??

Is that Oslo blue colour not an option for your new car? Would surely be perfect to have the only one!!!
Would love that – but didn't want to add the PTS lead-time and complexity to the order. Or the price. However, since then I've learned that PTS car's are being painted all the time now and it does not add as much lead-time to car's as it did even a year ago.

Don't tempt me!

It's true – it feels like 50% of my milage on this car was on the other-side-of-the-road!
