Introduction

My co-driver and I have been thinking about this trip for a long time. After a few false starts – pandemic restrictions have now reduced enough to make the road trip viable, legal and safe.

Our planning has been completed and we're finally underway.

We hope you'll join us on this 18 day journey as we road-trip across beautiful Northern Europe and learn about how we and our Taycan 4S (build: PMFBLBS1) performs in colder winter conditions.

All the photos we take will be available at full resolution on a Flickr photo album at https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/albums/72177720296472072 and we'll post some more candid/on-the-way shots to Instagram at the hashtag #TaycanToTheArctic.

Epic!

Be safe and we'll all look forward to reading your log and gasping at the photos with your shiny new Leica!

Day 1: Dublin (Ireland) -> Cherbourg (France)

In the afternoon, we join the now familiar W.B. Yeats cruise ferry in Dublin Port for the overnight 18-hour crossing to Cherbourg in France. Travelling via what is known in Ireland as "the land bridge" – via the UK and across the Chunnel – would probably be our preferred route but it is still much easier to remain within the EU/EEA area from the perspective of COVID-19 travel rules.

As always, we plug in to the 3kW AC charger on the car deck – ensuring we'll exit the ferry with a full battery. The previous times we've used the charger on the ferry it was free – but now Irish Ferries are adding €15 onto the cost of the ticket if you book it.

A reasonable cost considering the convenience and it comes with the added bonus that they load EVs first onto the ship.

The cabin's on-board are very modern and comfortable.

51874314535_ac2a6a1404_4k.jpg

We leave Dublin on time for the 18 hour crossing to France – expecting to arrive into Cherbourg at 11.30 tomorrow.

51873803271_1941c42271_4k.jpg

Passing Poolbeg Lighthouse as we pull out of Dublin Port and into the Irish Sea.

51874932754_704f6577b1_4k.jpg

This being off-peak for Ireland, the ship is very quiet and probably only running to carry cargo.

Safe travel! Road in FInland these days is very icy due to zeroish temperature. Good to have proper winter tyres on.

Looking forward to this TB.
Really enjoy all your road trips.
?

That anvil cloud looks quite menacing.
Assuming it was a bit too nippy for cocktails and quoits on deck.
?

And I don't think you'll need to call on Neptune to dunk anyone as they cross the equator either.

Would have been good value if you’d managed to arrive with <10% battery charge!

18 hours x 3kw = 54kw… probably less than 50 at the battery… would not have charged completely !
