amazing tour and photos! I was planning something similar for later (warmer) this year. May I ask if it is more of an electric cannonball style - lots of drives and hotels, so more petrolhead oriented or do you also have time to visit cities and attractions?

On this particular trip the drive is the holiday due to the available time we have away from our work obligations and also because we enjoy experiencing what a long distance EV trip is like.

However, as we move into Scandinavia, the daily distances reduce and our Leica camera and photography will start to take more prominence. This weekend has been about trying to get from Ireland to Norway as quickly as possible while not driving for a dangerously long time.

Day 3: Köln (Germany) -> Kiel (Germany)

After a lovely breakfast, we pack up our car and continue our long hauling route to Norway, with Kiel near Germany's border with Denmark today's destination. The route takes us in a north or north easterly direction for the entire day – which feels good and about right!

In planning I added an additional charging stop today, to cater for the likely higher consumption at German autobahn speeds – while also taking into account that we're on Pirelli P Zero NF0 winter tyres. We made two "on-the-road" changes to our charging plan:
  • We skipped the first charger at Lichtendorf because we had got a full destination charge overnight
  • We swapped out the final charger – a non IONITY one – for the IONITY chargers at Standort – based on our actual consumption during the day

Charging always delivering fast energy with the combination of battery pre-conditioning and high-speed driving. Credit where its due to IONITY as well – every location has delivered an excellent experience so far. Every charging stall we pulled into worked first time – always delivering the maximum energy our battery can accept at the time. They are easier to find in daytime too!

Driving on the German Autobahn is always a fun experience if the speeds involved are still a novelty. This is the second time we've driven our Taycan on them and the A1 today was much quieter then the ones we had previously experienced between Munich and Stuttgart in the summer.

We were conscious of being on winter tyres – which have a speed rating of V (240 km/h) – lower then the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 that came with the car. For a trip like this where you are genuinely interested in making progress over the long distances, we found a sustained speed of 180 km/h was where the Taycan was most comfortable for today's conditions and traffic levels.

Energy consumption was approximately 7 kWh/100km higher than on 130 km/h limited roads, which we thought was very reasonable considering the higher speeds were held for hours at a time – outside of the speed restricted sections around larger towns and cities.

Our Taycan has the three performance options of Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), Rear Axel Steering (RAS) and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). Additionally we have the larger battery and the (white) Porsche Surface Coated Brakes.

It is very difficult to determine what – if any – impact these options had to today's driving experience. But we can report that the car behaved very well. Three aspects we noticed that built confidence were:
  • The regen combined with the brakes were excellent for pealing off high speed very quickly. Absolutely not a hint of brake fade after many hours of continuous high speed driving.
  • Changing lanes – at 200 km/h – was easy to control and very smooth.
  • There are a few sweeping bends at unrestricted sections and you could feel (and see on the driver display) PDCC keeping the car flat as the centripetal force tugged on the side of the car.
Porsche know how to make an autobahn car!

Throughout the trip so far, the Passenger Display helps the co-driver maintain excellent situational awareness – delivering their own preferred navigation experience and of course the practical abilities to tweak the planned stops en-route without impacting the driver.

We pulled into our hotel at Kiel as darkness fell and plugged into our destination charger for the night.

Just boarded the cruise ferry to Oslo

Our Taycan parked on a ramp – putting the parking brake to the test!

Twenty hours crossing to Oslo – so we're impressed by the quality of our cabin.

Looking forward to catching a glimpse of U-Boat 995 off the starboard side as we leave Kiel in an hours time.

Nice!

That's "a tad more" than your standard" "cabin with exterior view" i notice? :D

Thanks for the U-955 refrence. I was not aware of it, and it's history...and indeed that it is placed outside of Kiel harbour.

When I read these road trips, it makes me think that having to plan for charges actually makes it more interesting than if you were to do similar in an ICE car.

Rather than it being a hassle which most none ev owners would assume, it actually improves things as you plan more.

That said, I bet most people wouldn't do it properly and would end up stranded in the middle of nowhere with no charge.

Thank you – yep Google Translate works well for it. Hopefully Apple Translate (built into their OSes) will support Norwegian in the future.

Thank you for the links – much appreciated. I was aware of the list one and would be using it in our planning but I didn't have the map link – which is super helpful.

I think it is impossible to plan a firm route at this time of year – and we were very aware of that – for us its the adventurous element to this trip. A big reason we use hotels.com is that it allows us very late cancelling of accomodation – if we need to replan at short notice due to realities on the ground.

We're prepared to adapt as conditions require.
In case you want to try out the more quaint hotels in Norway I can recommend those that are part of a chain called The Historic. Definitely something out of the ordinary.

We had a sleep in this morning waking to see our ship – Color Magic – docking across the water from our hotel balcony.

Exiting our hotel – The Atlantic Kiel – at 11am for the literal five minute trip over to the docks where we entered the queue to board, with our ship towering above us.

Boarding after about an hour to allow trucks and cargo on first.

After checking out our cabins we went up to the aft sun deck where there was an excited mood among our fellow passengers.

Took a few times to figure out "the system". Keeping the snow chains away from each other in there is key – they just love to tangle themselves and the bag they came in was too big/awkward/bulky.

The Porsche Frunk Liner helps protect things and has saved me when I had a previous screen wash bottle leak.

But yep, it all goes in.

Spoiler: except the pink pigs – I just need any excuse to photo them!
