awesome trip! I don't know how you drive a right hand drive car on left hand drive roads. It must take some getting used to

It does! However, options and features on the Taycan do help. Key ones for me are:
  • Lane change assist
  • Current speed limit display
  • Inverted beam

Day 5: Oslo (Norway) -> Otta (Norway)

After an extremely calm and relaxing crossing we awoke for breakfast on Deck 15 – The Observation Deck – rewarding us with our first views of Norway.

Breakfast finished, we stepped out onto the optimistically named Sun Deck.

And soaked in the views.

We headed down to the car deck and very shortly were disembarking at the Port of Oslo.

Norway as a member of the EFTA (de facto Schengen) there were no passport procedures and we were in the tunnels under Oslo within minutes of leaving the boat.

Literally the first car we saw was another Taycan and very soon there were plenty more – we saw more Taycan's in our first hour in Norway than the entire trip across France, Belgium and Germany.

We joined the E6 – a road we're going to become very familiar with – and headed to our overnight stopover.

Weather was great, clear conditions, dry and not too cold.

We randomly stopped at a service station for a comfort break and some supplies. I was impressed to see banks of chargers there – my first sense – beside the number of Tesla's – that this is a very EV progressed country – a window into the future for the rest of us in Europe.

With our Taycan/Winter Tyres getting their first small taste of "snow".

We popped into a IONITY charging station – the first I think I've ever seen with more than four charging pedestals (there were six) – among the Taycan's and EQC's.

Before reaching our hotel at Otta for tonight. Though this hotel was a little near to Oslo – and we could have made it all the way to Trondheim today – we originally planned and booked this stop – expecting that we'd have to queue for Norway's mandatory health checks and COVID antigen's.

We wanted to give ourselves some buffer if that took a few hours – however, that requirement was recently dropped by Norway.

Still, leaning on the conservative side when planning is what helps make these trips feasible.

The days charging stats:

LocationStart SOC %End SOC %kWh addedCostDurationAmbient TempBattery TempCharger TypeNetwork
Øyer, Norway31%95%53.78€9.500h 28m139DC 350 kWIONITY

Charging Notes: We only needed one stop today with real-world consumption so took out our first planned IONITY. We record costs in EURO (€) as they hit my account – though they are charged here in NOK.

Today we did 294 km over 5:02 hours, with an average speed of 60 km/h, consuming 26.4 kWh/100km.

Irish Taycan in Norway

How on earth do you manage to keep your Porsche so clean and shiny, all the long way from Ireland? When I drive on the very same roads you are now, my black batmobile becomes dirty just after a few miles. So do you include wash and polish on your charging pit-stops on the tour as well? Just wondering, he he.

Very nice colour on your Taycan by the way, in good contrast to the background!! Enjoy the rest of your trip

PS Try to avoid speeding, because here in Norway it ain’t cheap getting caught.

I've genuinely done nothing to it since I left Dublin. I think Neptune Blue is good at hiding road grime. I imagine I'll give it a wash at some stage with a manual wand type wash. Also, my car has no protection, no special coatings, nothing.

I do have someone come professionally clean it every two weeks – so maybe – cleaning it thoroughly so often – means that there isn't any base layer of dirt to add to? I'm unsure, tbh.

Roger. I try to stick to local rules – guest in the country and all that – but yeah already noticed that some of the posted limits are really low – and plenty of cameras around. Heck, it will help with energy consumption!

Robot Room Service

Our room service robot back at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cologne. You dial 8080 on your room phone and the robot comes to your room. It rings your phone when it is at your door.

It was capable of navigating the elevators in the hotel to reach the different floors.

So it will bring your food / drinks up to you (with no tip)....and it shan't matter if you're lozzing about in the buff - or does it have a camera / mic with the operator watching?

It looked to me to be entirely autonomous – however, it only carried a limited set of goods in its belly. Think hotel mini-bar on wheels.

Day 6: Otta (Norway) -> Trondheim (Norway)

With not the longest day ahead of us, we awoke late in the morning for breakfast. We were very impressed by our overnight stay at the Thon Hotel Otta. For a three-star hotel it delivers well on the basics – clean room, welcoming service, modern decor and good wholesome food.

It snowed consistently overnight and we had our first "clear the snow off the car" chore day today!

The battery was at the ambient air temperature of -3 degrees celsius, and after getting underway, our initial energy consumption at 40 kWh/100km was very high as the car began warming up the cabin and the battery to more optimal levels.

On leaving Otta we immediately began travelling along a beautiful – and for us – unique – winter landscape.

As we didn't get an overnight destination charge – nor were we expecting one – we pulled into IONITY Dombås for a 20 minute charge.

And shortly we were climbing the 1000 meters over the Dovrefjell mountain pass. While the road was icy in some parts it was very navigable and I began to learn how the Taycan and Pirelli winter tyres behaved in the conditions.

While the outside air temperature fell to -9 degrees celsius as we gained height – the sky remained clear, there were no further snowfalls and we even saw a little bit of sun!

After crossing the mountain we continued north along the E6 towards Trondheim at an easy pace.

We were unsure if we'd get a destination charge tonight – we decided to pull into IONITY Klett for a quick 15 minute top-up. Our car looking decidedly more "Norway" than the day before!

Porsche Taycan Taycan To The Arctic Circle Road Trip 2022 51883780798_4aa1426ceb_4k

We drove the remaining 20 km into the city centre – hitting a little bit of evening traffic – and pulled up at the Britannia Hotel – our accommodation for tonight. It is valet parking here but they immediately said yes to getting the car charged up.

We took a few snaps in the streets around the hotel and retired for the evening – we've an early start tomorrow.

Today we did 244 km over 5:24 hours, with an average speed of 46 km/h, consuming 24.0 kWh/100km.

While the day started out with very high consumption – it averaged out nicely across the trip. I was impressed with the final figures and the last IONITY charge was really charging for tomorrow's leg.

Assistant Systems in Snow/Icy road conditions

With snow covering most of the markings on the road – and the driving line not always staying in the middle of the lane – we found that we had to turn off the following assistant systems:
  • Innodrive
  • Active Lane Keeping
  • Lane Keep Assist
We left activated "ordinary" adaptive cruise control (ACC) – however only used it on the traffic filled road into Trondheim. We wouldn't trust cruise control anywhere near an icy road!
