Hi everyone,
Yesterday someone ran a red light and crashed into the front right of our Taycan. There was one witness walking by who saw our light was green. It’s been a rough 24 hours to say the least.
Ours was a 2022 custom build we waited almost one year to get with 5k miles. Jet black metallic with ceramic coating and painted wheels/calipers. This was truly our pride and joy.
I’d appreciate anyone’s opinion on how severe this damage looks. Would the at fault insurance company likely total the car? My worry is that if repairs are required, our Taycan will never be the same. All airbags went off and the car had some error messages pop up. The car will be looked at within 1-2 days by the estimator and insurance.
I appreciate any advice from the knowledgeable folks on here! Attached are a few photos.

That sucks. So sorry this happened. Did you not have a dashcam? Wish I could answer any of your questions but I have no idea.

Hopefully you guys are all ok, and of course thats all that really matters.

The Taycan did it's job.

Sadly, that looks pretty bad, and if it were me I would push the car to be totaled or I would likely sell it immediately after repair. With parts availability and possible hidden damage including suspension and steering rack not to mention the possibility of battery housing damage and front drive motor, will likely be a few months in the shop.

I ran into a curb cracking the right front wheel and no body damage whatsoever on my Panamera and the porsche requirements for proper repair included a new steering rack and new suspension parts totaling 16K including a new wheel and tire. Insurance paid because it was Porsche required repairs to be back to full spec because of the force that cracked the wheel they could not guarantee lack of internal damage to the aforementioned parts.

So sorry this happened, and I would probably be putting in for another allocation right away, while waiting for the results of the evaluation and or repair.

Maybe you will be able to find a similar spec on a lightly preowned one that would make you happy?

I ran into a (small) deer in my oldish Panamera turbo at speed and that mushed all sorts of things in front end - radiator, aircon, intercoolers, body work etc. Cost about £10k to put right via a specialist.

Not saying it's the same thing, but i'd have thought (hope) a >$100k new car should have a value well in excess of the repair costs. Personally wouldn't bother me to get it fixed and keep it.

Good luck with it and glad you're all ok.

No dash cam. Only a witness walking by who saw our light was green. The next one will have a dash cam though!

In my case, I was happy to keep the car based on the damage I had, certainly worth it, but sadly the original posters accident is much worse and the unknowns with electric cars and possible lack of experience by techs doing these kind of repairs would make me wary of the end result. Certainly a personal decision on the tolerance to accept this kind of thing.

If they fix it….and that’s a big if, let’s hope the offending party has hefty liability insurance, if not, you may need to make a claim against your own policy to get the repairs done, get a replacement vehicle for a long period of time, etc. Lastly, and it’s very important, be prepared to go to battle for diminished value (if that is a thing in Texas, it is in Florida) because you will take a massive reduction in value if they fix it and you ultimately sell it. I’m in the midst of one battle now…although my accident hasn’t hit CarFax yet…where my claim was approximately $4000 against the driver who scraped us…but my diminished value with even a cosmetic accident has been estimated up to $7000 with a dirty CarFax versus a clean Car Fax. All my best, I’m glad you guys are safe.
In closing, it’ll be weeks of battling back and forth between the shop and the insurance company(ies) to determine the actual loss cost, there will be supplemental after supplemental as they dig deeper into the damage.

Appreciate the thoughtful insight. Everybody is ok and the Taycan really did do its job.
I fully agree with all of your comments regarding repairs and timing. I am mind boggled at the repairs required to fix your cracked Panamera wheel!!!
There is a local dealership who has a few great options available so we definitely have our eyes open.
Thanks again!

Make sure you go to a Porsche Approved Collision Shop(s) ….none of the dealers here in South Florida have a collision department….crazy, right?

Thanks for the insight. This is definitely a process we are taking day by day as we get status updates. Once we hear if repairs are needed are not, we can take the best route from there. Truly appreciate the info!

This December 5th minor sideswipe has turned into a five figure claim including vehicle rental, diminished value…soooo…..get ready for a lengthy, sometimes exasperating experience. My vehicle got fixed in a few weeks, but the diminished value claim….still being chased. She put a minor curb rash on my rim…”too bad….replace it!”…the tire was fine though.

Update: We visited the car today and it no longer powers on. At the accident, the car had 53% battery left. We visited it today and within 24 hours does not power on (pretty worrisome).

If there is indication that there may have been damage to the HV battery then I would think that the list of things that Porsche would want to replace would start tipping the decision into the "total it" territory. The Taycan is still new, so Porsche probably isn't going to want to deal with surprise warranty service or safety issues because they weren't extremely careful with their newly-written collision repair processes and accidentally let still-compromised Taycans back on the road. They are probably going to prefer if it gets tagged as salvage and never have to deal with it themselves again if there is any question at all about what may have been harmed in the collision.

One question is whether there's much of a market for damaged Taycans to get non-certified repaired/parted yet, though: if not, the insurance company might try to keep pushing for repair just because they might not be getting much for the damaged vehicle otherwise.

Edit: Another piece is the current supply chain: will the certified collision center even be able to get the necessary parts in any kind of reasonable timeframe? If not, it again points to more liklihood of being written off.

(this is all just complete, mostly-uninformed speculation on my part, though)

Glad you are ok - as people have said - any landing you walk away from, is a good landing.

I think it's borderline restore/write-off. Amazingly, the glass is intact so that points to restore.... BUT . Depends what damage is hidden under the front skin. Sorry, but it's a bit of a toss-up at this stage.

Here's wishing you get the right outcome for you. Good luck.
