New Nürburgring record for the Porsche Taycan

10/08/2022

Never before has a series-production electric car posted a faster lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife: Porsche development driver Lars Kern took just seven minutes and 33 seconds for a lap in the Taycan Turbo S.

The sports sedan was equipped with the new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and – aside from the required roll cage and racing seats – was an entirely standard production vehicle. It weighed the same as the series production car. A notary was on hand to verify the new record time on the 20.8-kilometre circuit in Germany’s Eifel region, while TÜV Rheinland confirmed that the record-breaking road car was a standard production model.

The performance kit includes 21-inch RS-Spyder-design wheels with road-approved, Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tyres that are now available for the Taycan. Their tyre compound is similar to that of racing tyres. Another element of the performance kit is a software update to the Porsche 4D Chassis Control so that it works in harmony with the sports tyres. The system analyses and synchronises all the chassis systems of the Taycan in real time. “In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range,” says Kern. “With the new performance kit I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot.”

Performance kit by Porsche Tequipment

The performance kit is offered through Porsche Tequipment. It is currently only available in Germany and only for the 2023 model year Taycan Turbo S sports sedan. Production of these cars started in late July 2022, while the performance kit itself is expected to be available from the end of the year. The plan is for the retrofit to be carried out after initial delivery, in the Porsche workshops in Zuffenhausen. Transport to and from the factory is included, as is the individual vehicle approval and registration of the Taycan.

The sports tyres are primarily designed for driving on the track. Buyers can therefore switch back to standard road tyres at any time. It is not necessary to restore the original chassis software when doing this.

“We’re delighted that the Nürburgring record for electric cars is back in Porsche hands,” says Kevin Giek, Vice President Model Line Taycan. “This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan.” The considerable power of the Turbo S, of up to 460 kW (625 PS; Taycan Turbo S: Electric power consumption* combined (WLTP) 23.4 – 21.9 kWh/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (WLTP) 0 g/km, Electric range* combined (WLTP) 440 – 468 km, Electric range* in town (WLTP) 524 – 573 km, Electric power consumption* combined (NEDC) 26.0 kWh/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (NEDC) 0 g/km), was a key factor in its success. With Launch Control active, the car maxes out at 560 kW (761 PS) from a standstill.

Porsche engineering over tin can brute force of Tesla

If you're unfamiliar with the performance kit, it encompasses new 21-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires while the Porsche 4D Chassis Control gets a software update. Customers can order the Taycan Turbo S with this upgrade through Porsche Tequipment, but only in Germany for the time being.

Priced at €13,377, the pack is available strictly for the 2023 Taycan Turbo S of which production kicked off at the end of last month. The kit is a retrofit that will be installed on cars after the owner takes delivery

At that price I would hope you can keep the original wheels&tyres!

And now the title is regained with the Tequipment Performance Kit (€13,377.32 currently only available in Germany and only for the 2023 model year Taycan Turbo S sports sedan). The previous record was 7:42 for the Taycan, set in 2019 in a Turbo, not a Turbo S. So that's nearly a 10 second improvement which is remarkable.

The model S plaid did it in 7:31 though I don't understand how it achieved this with the factory brakes which seem to be denounced everywhere.

according to the group pic guy's clothings the record was set some months ago?

edit:
the Plaid's 7:31 wasn't really a full lap and missing the part of T13 (former public NS entry). Official time was 20.8-kilometre Nordschleife in 7:35.579 min

was the Plaid's 7:31 really a full lap or missing the part of T13 (former NS entry)?
Yes I recalled that the Plaid was a 7:31 too - so was not sure how this claim was made - if its old news, sorry for posting as new ..... but still impressive to almost match a 1000hp car of similar weight with a far less powerful one...

It was a combined sector time based lap time.

I'm excited cuz it proves the Taycan is a better car.
Still, I think the lap can be quicker due to the topspeed of the Taycan which is "only" 269 km/h...
Most supercars run over 300km/h and that gains a lot of seconds on the straights, especially the last, long straight (even the Panamera Turbo runs 4 seconds faster).

The Plaid runs particularly faster than the Taycan so there's a new challenge for Elon.
I'm pretty sure he'll take up that challenge.
Let us enjoy this moment! 😂👍🏻

Sounds like Musk to fudge those numbers.

This one car review says it best: "Tesla Model S Plaid has brakes like a Toyota Camry."

This is quick - for a heavy car. So, now the fastest EV is a fraction of a second faster than a Cayenne (7:33.9)🐘, yet still 4 seconds slower than a Panamerra 🐩 . I can't get excited about that. I love my Taycan for host of reasons - but lap times is not one of them.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the video. The tyres were clearly working very hard, there wasn't much understeer and it cornered flat enough, but it didn't look fast like say a GT2 or even a GT3. It just seemed heavy (which of course it is) and a bit of a struggle to get through the corners.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, it is a 2 1/2 tonne car after all. Or perhaps I can't get the 919 out of my head :)
