Elon Musk just posted his first public comment after this report, and he doesn't deny the news. He says that supercharger network growth will continue though.

"Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations"

He probably didn't get the NEVI subsidy which would be the first time Tesla didn't extract from the tax payer.

Charging is a Money losing business.

How is this consistent with “Fires entire supercharger team”?

Hopefully that erratic nut job lunatic decides to spin off the supercharging network once and for all. It would be best for the EV industry since the guy can obviously not be trusted with such a valuable resource.

Now that the team that managed the alliance relationships to allow other car brands to charge at a Tesla supercharger location has been eliminated, what happens to the brands that have not gone live yet? Ford and Rivian got in under the wire, but I wonder if other brands may be negatively affected by this wholesale department elimination? Time will tell I guess.

it could mean that he believes that for the most part his network is pretty well built out and he is now focusing on expanding/maintaining the existing chargers rather than building new locations.

A friend was being recruited last year in L.A. to design the future Supercharging locations. They were aggressively going to expand it out. I saw all the plans they were developing more like the drive in theater, lounges, fancy locations that were more attractive, not just superchargers.
To fire the entire team is not a good sign. Don't forget they also axed the new car development team.
Tesla is in survival mode.

maybe that "stretching" of the concept is what drove him to axe the group.
movie theaters, restaurants, even lounges is not what road trippers want from L3 charging, they want to charge and go.

It wasn't just those concepts, Its standard ones too, but he got rid of all of them. Something happened for him to make such a drastic move

Wouldn’t it be interesting if some other car manufacturer (e.g., Ford, GM, Volkswagen??) were to hire Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s former Sr. Director for EV Charging, and most of her team to work on an NACS network to rival that of Tesla?

I understand that most of the actual work is done by third-party system installers so my guess is that new contracts could be let quickly. Elon’s loss would then be someone else’s gain.

With the right VC funding, they could even go off and start up a EV charging business from scratch.

If you read his tweets (or X’s) it’s more likely he got mad a the VP in charge of the charging efforts and fired the whole team.
