Our travel EVSE: Juice Booster 2

Did we use it on this trip? No, we didn't.

Have we used it? Yes, lots. Mostly at hotels that don't have dedicated destination chargers. Some purposefully don't install Type 2 chargers and just have country specific sockets at parking spaces.

In this case, I find a travel charger the best. I don't regret purchasing one – but I'm a bit into it and wanted to support this company by purchasing their product. It supports everything Europe can throw at you. You'd be surprised what kind of 3-phase industrial sockets that hotels – without dedicated chargers – have near their air conditioning units. I've pulled 22kW from hotels that technically didn't have charging.

You can likely get by with the charger that comes with the car and a few normal adaptors.

Passing cables in the window of a hotel in Ireland:

Note: I unrolled the extension cable – to avoid cables heating up dangerously. And yes, I had permission to park on the disabled spot!

Plugging – a loaner Taycan – into wall sockets at hotels in France on a previous EV road-trip:

Day 18: Cherbourg (France) -> Dublin (Ireland)

Woke up just in time for a lovely "Irish" breakfast in the ships restaurant – something included with the cabin we had on Irish Ferries.

Ireland looking faintly green off the port side.

Overnight the car charged at 3kW from 25% to 89% – enough to last me more than a week's "normal" driving.

We drove the 15 km to home – mostly under the city via the Dublin Port Tunnel.

Before the Taycan was back parked in its normal underground space beside our other city EV – a Peugeot e-208.

The only destination on this fantastic trip (and hotel choice and subsequent stress it cost you) was why spend the night next to CDG? You did not go into Paris so why get that close to a mega city, where the infrastructure is going to be stretched in general (even with an ICE).
I make the mistakes so others don't have to! :D

I've done this before when on non-EV trips – used hotel airports when not using the airport – and its worked out okay – but this time it bit me.

It could have gone so much smoother if we were a few minutes earlier/luckier. One of the car's that blocked the EV charger had just gone in before us. It wasn't until we got in and looked around that we found the chargers and realised they were blocked – and only just.

If we'd been quicker or found the chargers faster – we could have swapped parking spaces with the other car – we'd have pulled in to the EV space, plugged in and had another nights destination charge with no drama.

It was the nearby poorly maintained 175kW charger that brought most of the frustration that evening for me.

People like to complain about IONITY – including VW CEO – but based on the many I've been to this summer – if the ones being built were available now – we'd have got a charge with no drama.

We just need more and more IONITY (or whoever) style charging stations. And less fragmentation. It will happen – eventually.

This is superb. Thanks.
I’m also interested in the kit you took (expertly detailed in this excellent thread).
Anything out of all of it you thought was a must and anything you wouldn’t take again doing a similar trip?

Lastly, any issues using the Tesla destination chargers that you haven’t detailed?

Thanks

How much did we spend on charging?

All our paid charging went through the Porsche Charging Service. Even though we had a back-up of Shell & ChargeMap charging service cards, we didn't have to use them.

So just over 3000 miles for £160 of fuel. That is pretty cheap - and travelling in style! Obviously there are other costs relating to the miles on your car, but the fuel cost is way less than an ICE car which would have been 3 or more times that figure.

When I ran my Panamera Turbo S – it cost €0.12 per km – so this trip of 5,125 km would have cost approximately €615 on fuel – if done in Ireland.

Fuel prices are a little higher on continental Europe – so probably closer to €750 for this trip.

Very nice travel log! :like:

I think it's pretty irrelevant, who supplies it. The key feature is plug & charge.
