Maybe slightly off topic, but does charging at home via a 7.4kW supply precondition the battery before a drive? I know you can precondition the cabin, but can it precondition the battery so that you get good economy from the getgo? Or is preconditioning of the battery ONLY in relation to pre DC rapid charging?

From what i understand, with AC it does warm the battery up a bit as a consequence of the charging and cabin pre-heating. But it's not a feature, just a by-product, and in my experience just by a few degrees - i.e. its not going to get your HV battery from 5 to 30 degrees. Maybe 5 to 10.

Basically, no it won't and would take some time to achieve it due to the low power of the input supply.

The battery will naturally warm up due to the chemical reaction but not to the same level of DC which is around 32C.

Preheating of the cabin will also warm the battery a little simply as a by product of using energy but if the car is still connected to the EVSE I believe that that will be the energy source rather than the battery but I could be mistaken.

Preconditioning can only currently be triggered by selecting a DC charging location which is > = 50kW in NAV. Assuming there is sufficient distance to that location and Charging Planner is active then your battery will be warmed up to reduce time spent charging.

The alternative is simply let the DC EVSE spend the first 10 mins to precondition as it charges to reduce charging time. Again you can't control this.

Not being pedantic, thanks for the explanation. I just don't use timers at home as it's easier to set it on the Hypervolt and forget about it, regardless of whether I'm charging the Taycan or the wife's A3.
When setting timings etc only via the HV charger, can the HV charger also stop the charging, at for example 85% SOC?

No, but you can set it up as an 85% profile in the App. It will stop charging when the battery gets to 85% (although profiles can be somewhat confusing - see elsewhere on the Forum)

Jury is still out on that one. I must have a timer to control the end of a charging session otherwise I'll end up at 100%.

There may have been a software update that now controls this better with profiles (not had a chance to try) but in the early days you had no choice but to use a timer in conjunction.

What charger have you installed at home?

I am hoping to get the Taycan as soon as April per my SA. I do not even have tracking available in the app after I called PCNA to add it, possibly because they do not have a VIN yet. I have been researching what charger I want to install at home and settled on the Emporia that I have never heard of before, but I like the direct wire and getting 11kW at 60Amp input, which is not unique, but it seems to be not too big and has good reviews.

However, then I started thinking why would I charge at Home at all given our electric bill for a single-family home is already too high with primary draws being the tankless heater and teenager clothes washing, we even wash dishes by hand, with everything else being LED smart lighting.

Frist, my dealer is 10 min away and they just installed Porsche required DC charger capable of max charging if needed. This is closer than a Shell/BP stations we use for the Macan/Cayenne fill ups. I do not mind hanging around there while it charges. The only issue is that they have only 1 and it is not on the app with available/busy status, but the dealer says that no one is really using it but service, and I assume if I need it then I can ask service to unplug to give me priority. Not sure if this is a reasonable expectation but want to see if anyone else tried this.

Second, although we are in a modern metro area, we only have 1 EA charge point 30 min away that has 350kW units at a Wal-Mart in not so good part of town and 1 EA charge point 15 min away that has 6x 150kW units that do not seem busy a few times I looked on the app. Let's say, I only want to charge at max 150kW, how long does it take to charge it say from SOC 15% to 80% under ideal conditions (battery pre-heated via Nav) and me having no issue hanging around the dealership?

My question is, why would I install my Home EVSE and pay for the use on my electric bill, if I have free to use charge points to use that are closer or similar to a gas station we use for other daily use cars (although Taycan's range is say half of them).

You need to look at the relative costs of public charging versus home charging. Home charging will be AC based (therefore slower) and lower power (therefore slower) but for overnight charging is perfect and likely to be a cheaper regular option.

DC chargers are much faster - particularly 350kW units (you will get a max of 270kW in perfect conditions).

Depending on ambient temperature (32C ideally) 5% SOC - 80% SOC using 350kW will take 22.5 minutes (approx) - note there may be power restrictions which reduce the power flow and so charging will take longer.

Depending on ambient temperature (32C ideally) 15% SOC - 80% SOC using 150kW will take 45 minutes (approx) - note there may be power restrictions which reduce the power flow and so charging will take longer.

You get a 'free' EVSE with your car so why not install at home - convenience and cost is king?

Tracking query - nothing to do with VIN. Sounds like your dealer missed a process step at time of order being fixed and firm.

Also free charging with purchase only last normally in US for 12-24-36 mos depending on when purchased and only on Electrify America network. Great if you have one nearby and also have 350 KWT charging capes at them…then it’s 20-30 mins for full 85+% SOC. So great if and when available but can be variable depending on where you live in US and travel profile. So for me home charging even at level 2 is a no brained. Can charge overnight when electrons are cheaper. One or two charges a week at about $9-15 is good for me and waay cheaper than any gas fillips for any of my ICE vehicles So for my use installed to Wallbox 48amp chargers on separate 60amp dedicated separate circuits via each charger hardwire so charging takes me about 5hrs a night and am good to go! So that’s good for daily needs. Wireless and BT capeble to monitor charging on the Wallbox and so can monitor along with Porsche’s app as needed. Overall setup works for me so can’t say why one would NOT home charge with one of these cars.

I appreciate the inputs. I am not doubting the benefits of convenience and cost is not an issue here. I am going to try and see how I can do without since I do not have an ICE fill up station at home and simulate as if I have to fill-up the Taycan at a station away. 3 years of free EA is a lot so the 15 min EA station at 150kW should be plenty and hopefully more will be added during that time. Also, the charging at the dealer 10 min away is free for now with a single unit (recently added with no plans for more at this time since the cost was around $300K) and hopefully stays that way longer term. Of course, if I find it inconvenient, then the lead time for install of a 60Amp is may be a week and my electric point of contact already scoped it all out and ready to make it happen when I am. I just caught myself thinking, why do it at all.

I suspect you'll end up home charging too at some stage due to the sheer convenience of it. Why queue and charge when you can sleep and charge?

See how you go and happy if you prove me wrong.

Let me be first to trailblaze this. I am betting on everyone having a home charger so I can be the only one at the dealer charging using up their $300K charger after I drop off my son to school and score a free Perrier water and kick the tires of what appears to be only sold, missing amps, or used examples in the show room.

This is the least they can do for me with Taycan being 3rd purchase overall and the most expensive since it is a no compromises Turbo build.
More than likely you'll be setting up your own charger as I suspect that 1) the Porsche charger will be used on their own models and keeping cars ready to go for customers (the dealer has needs too other than charging your car daily and on the regular for free I bet). Also the dealers chargers are NOT that faster than the EV network 350kw ones. I once ran my Taycan CT4 down to less than 5% SOC and had to drop by the nearby dealership to use their sole Porsche charger to recharge my car to get my buddy back to to the airport and me home and after going to get a meal and back for oh about 1.5hrs I still only have about 30-35% SOC back in my car. To get it up above 50% would have taken much longer and I suspect Porsche would NOT have appreciated me tying up their single charger that long.

Also same goes for your EV network 150 KW charger plan. Will take much longer than 20-30 mins as you think/suggest so plan to have something to do for the hour plus or so you'd need to sit and charge your Taycan. Remember the free charging sessions are only for 30 mins or less...at 31 mins onward the meter starts ticking and you start paying! Of course you can unplug at 30 mins and restart it again for another free session but who wants to do that? Now if you get a 350KW EV charger you're golden...just remember they are not as plentiful as one thinks or suggests. So just saying you likely may need to rethink the home charge avoidance/deferment plan a bit. Unless hyper speed DC chargers are plentiful in your area or work related charging is avail then you may need to add home charging also. Just what I've observed lately and experienced. Good luck!!

I'm starting to look in to this myself now. We've got a friendly contractor who specialise in Solar and EV unit installs so can use them and they've asked about preference for units.

I mentioned the Andersen A2 that's mentioned on here and his immediate response was that they've only ever installed 2 of them and that the price was excessive for what it does.

Recommended these two just as starting points...

https://www.projectev.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Product-Datasheet-EVA-07S-SE-EVA-07S-SE-C.pdf

https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Produc...lurl&msclkid=50bc2ce10d041b0cc6d64f0f766e45e9

He mentioned they'd regularly installed Zappi units too.

...but I've no idea about the benefits or drawbacks of any unit.

Is there a particular concern over the app functionality or is it the case people just use the car's system for programming charge etc?
