Why is 85% battery recommended as the normal maximum?

Just in case there is any doubt about max daily charging - see the following directly from Porsche

https://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/vehicleinformation/bev/

"A lithium-ion battery is subject to physical and chemical ageing, as well as wear and tear. This reduces the battery capacity, depending on the usage pattern and environmental conditions, resulting in a reduction in range and an increase in charging times as the battery ages. Due to the effect of temperature on battery and charging performance, as well as battery life, please consider the following when parking, driving and charging your car:

If possible, avoid permanent ambient temperatures of over 30°C, such as prolonged parking in direct sunlight.

If you cannot avoid ambient temperatures of over 30°C when stationary, connect the vehicle to the mains supply after use and charge the high-voltage battery with AC (alternating current) to a maximum charge status of 85%.

If the car is left stationary for more than two weeks, the ambient temperature should, if possible, be between 0°C and 20°C and the battery charge status maintained between 20% and 50% during this time.
For the shortest possible charging time, a battery temperature of approx. 30°C to 35°C is ideal.

If charging the car on a daily basis, the maximum charge status of the high-voltage battery should be set to approx. 80%."
This really should be stickied somewhere! It contains all the information most posts suggest, but in 1 handy and short article from Porsche itself.

Just to be sure .. I left the default profile to whatever it default was at and I added a timer to be used every day with the time when I generally leave for work and 10 degr (Celcius) pre-heat.

I Charge once a week to 100% - the range goes up everytime I charger her - now around 265 miles on a full charge. First charge was 200 miles!

Part of it may be explained by the use of disc brakes only for the first 200 miles to break them in. Another is tracking your driving style.

I was diligently charging the Taycan to 85% unless I had a long trip planned, when a friend who is an EV veteran told me that the 85% is only for when you are using fast chargers, due to the heat and that with the low wattage domestic chargers 100% would be okay all the time.

Has anyone looked into this, which is true and why?
Asked my dealer and they mentioned clear that i can charge 100% without any issue at home with 11KW. The software / hardware will take care to avoid problems.

Charging to 100% at relatively low power is definitely preferred but may cause a very slight long-term degradation that you would unlikely notice. I wirelessly charge my iPhone 11 MAX every night - the battery test displays 99% capacity after one year - the Taycan is most likely similar (~1% per year).

Discharging to a real 0% is a killer - statistically, half the individual cells would be permanently damaged. It is certain Porsche protects 0% State of Charge (SOC) more than 100% SOC. My estimate is ~3% actual SOC is left when the display shows 0% SOC.

The Taycan learns your driving style over time, much like the PDK transmission in our other vehicles.

Depending on how you drive your Taycan, your range may fluctuate up and down overtime. The "Range Gauge" really is an estimate of overall range, versus something like a gas tank gauge which is pretty accurate for the mileage you'd actually get out of a tank of gas in that car.

Agree.

I think that is just part of the EV routine, that although very easy to do, is just different for people who have only had an ICE.

Weird for me to plug in when I have "only" 70% and don't plan much driving the next day, but I do it anyway and just have no worries.
I tried to limit my charge last night to 85%. It went to 85% and paused. When I got in the car this morning it was at 100%. I thought I had used a profile that I had set up that called for a maximum charge of 85% and charging to take place between 10pm and 7am. It started charging at around 8:30pm. If anyone has a simple solution, I’d love to hear it. If not, I’ll call Porsche (they helped me yesterday when I couldn't connect to the Porsche server)...

Sounds like you have a timer set. Have a look under charging.

Or are you maybe just using a profile setting charge. You cannot set a maximum with this. The % you set is the minimum target that you want it to charge to immediately and then it will resume charging again if you also set times.
In order to set a maximum charge you need to set a timer charge.

Sorry to be uninformed, but how do I set a timer charge? Do I do that on the phone, in the car or on the charger? Thanks in advance for helping the helpless!!!

Either in the car or on the phone. You set the time that you want the car to be ready and charged to the target state of charge.

Did you watch the video on this thread:

I found it very informative, although don’t have the car to test.

It starts with EPA estimate. As you drIve and get (significantly) better range, it adapts to “your reality.” Don’t be surprised if it gets to 300 or more … unless you’re enjoying that addictive acceleration most of the time.
