Would be nice if they could do it with a production car. But marketing over substance seems to work.
Porsche Taycan "Xiaomi CEO Claims SU7 Ultra Is Over 20 Seconds Faster Than Porsche Taycan Turbo GT At The Ring" - Article IMG_7442

New lap record on the Nürburgring race track was set on October 28, 2024. The Xiaomi company presented the SU7 Ultra Prototype sports car and drove a full lap 20,832 km of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:46,87 minutes. The sports car was driven by test driver and racer David Pittard. The sports car is a pure prototype, so it does not appear in the table of production cars. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Prototype electric car features a high-performance electric drive system ( All-wheel drive ) with three motors—two V8s and one V6—delivering a combined output of 1,548 horsepower. Its lightweight body is constructed from carbon fiber. For optimal braking, it relies on a racing system developed by AP Racing Engineering, while Pirelli P Zero racing tires ensure superior traction on the Nürburgring race track. The weight of the sports car is 1,900 kg. The Xiaomi SU7 currently holds the title as the fastest four-door electric sports car on the Nürburgring.

there is also less money to be made post sale as EV's don't require the extensive upkeep of ICE vehicles draining valuable revenue from their post sale infrastructures.
Hmm... I would bet you Porsche service department at my dealer got a lot more money out of my first 2 years of driving a Taycan than my 2 years of owning a 911C4. 911 had one service, an oil change. I lost count how many times my Taycan went into service.
the german's are in trouble - nothing immediate by the way
I am not so sure about this one. I think I saw headlines fly recently about VW looking at closing down 3 factories in Germany, something apparently unprecedented to date. Tariffs will probably only go so far in protecting the domestic industry if it keeps on lagging behind the competition.

So a proto is faster than an EV sedan... Who's surprised?
In its category, it's still only 4th, 1m27s behind the 1st.

Basically:
  • It's not the real SU7 Ultra car that will go on sale.
  • It should go even faster with better conditions (no wet track; no leaf blocking some sensor giving no electric power for ~ 10 seconds in the second half).

And put your head into the rear seat, the one where the child seat is?
If it absorbs all of the crash energy but you break your back in the crash, has it really done its intended job? You'll never walk again, but at least your nose isn't broken.

Doing research it seems numerous cars are dropped from this “prototype” list. Manthey GT2, Nio EP9 and McLaren P1 so not sure how they came up with 4th.

Did you actually pay for service? Or you meant that Porsche paid the dealer for the recall work?

If the latter, i fully agree - had my Taycan in 3-4 times for recalls, and they provided a loaner every time. Hasn’t cost me a dime. Don’t ask about my ICE cars - it’s only bearable because I don’t go to the dealer. $240/hr, and 100% markup on parts? Get fucked.

Porsche 956?
I don't work for the Nurburgring, so I can only guess. It seems the oldest listed records are from 2018. Though the page intro says:
As of the 2019 season, lap records are officially recorded, confirmed and published by the Nürburgring. With carmakers providing proof on the world’s most demanding race track: On the total of 20.832 kilometres of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the Green Hell.
...
Since 2019, these record drives are officially confirmed and listed by the Nürburgring.
