The enhanced 2022 Taycan: greater connectivity and more customization

08/24/2021

Numerous upgrades to technology and equipment for the 2022 model year.

Porsche Taycan ? Official Release: 2022 Porsche Taycan Upgrades & New Colors 4_sternrubin

The 2022 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo which are due to arrive at U.S. dealers towards the end of this year will feature a number of enhancements. Significant upgrades include the integration of Android Auto in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, as well as the availability of Remote Park Assist as an option for the first time on the Taycan. With this new optional assistance system, the process of parking the car can be controlled via a smartphone, without the driver needing to be at the wheel.

The Taycan can be personalized to a greater degree than ever before with the new Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus options, meaning extensive personal color choices can now be selected. For example, the Taycan can now be painted in the ‘90s classic color tone Rubystar or in bright Acid Green.

Technological enhancements

The thermal management and charging functions have also been further improved as part of a series of technological developments to further optimize the Taycan’s drivetrain. With the Turbo Charging Planner, the high-voltage battery can now be heated to a slightly higher temperature than before. This means that fast charging is possible earlier and at a higher charge level, further reducing the time it takes to charge. In addition, the excess heat from the electrical components is used to an even greater extent for battery temperature regulation.

Optional Remote Park Assist: remote control parking

With the new Remote Park Assist option, it is possible to remotely control parking maneuvers via a smartphone when driving into and out of parking spaces without the driver needing to be behind the wheel. Automatic control is possible for both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and garages. The system automatically detects parking spaces and measures them using the vehicle’s ultrasonic sensors and camera systems. If there is enough space, the driver can start the parking process via the Porsche Connect app and then get out of the vehicle. The driver continuously monitors the parking process by pressing and holding a button on the smartphone’s app interface. The Remote Park Assist function independently takes over steering and control of the forward and reverse movements of the vehicle. If the button is re-leased, the Taycan immediately stops the parking maneuver.

Android Auto: now also integrated into the infotainment system

The sixth generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) has been fitted to the Taycan since its introduction in 2019. The all-electric sports car has always been a connectivity pioneer, starting with the seamless integrations of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. Along with Apple CarPlay support for the iPhone, Android Auto is now also integrated in the PCM. This means that smartphones with the Google Android operating system are now also supported when plugged in via the USB-C port. Selected phone functions and smartphone apps can therefore now be operated via PCM 6.0 or the Google Assistant voice commands.

The Voice Pilot voice assistant has been enhanced and understands instructions in everyday language even better while the satellite navigation system calculates more quickly and also displays its information more clearly thanks to redesigned graphics.

The layout and operating system have also been revamped slightly: there are now five menu options instead of three on the left side of the central display and the icons can be arranged individually.

Cult colors make a comeback: even more individual paintwork

In the ‘90s, Porsche introduced a number of particularly colorful paint finishes to its range. These quickly achieved cult status among fans of the brand and are especially popular today on classics like the 964-generation 911 models. These eye-catching colors are now making a comeback. As part of the continually developing personalization strategy of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the Taycan is now also available with Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus in addition to 17 standard paint colors. The first option – Paint to Sample - offers a choice of 65 additional colors, at present. This includes the Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar, Riviera Blue and Viola Metallic colors that are so characteristic of Porsche. The second option, Paint to Sample Plus, gives customers almost complete freedom in their choice of color, even permitting them to match their Taycan to their favorite accessory.

Successful Taycan sales

The Taycan has been selling particularly well this year. With 5,367 vehicles delivered in the first half of 2021 in the U.S., the year-to-date number is already higher than the total for 2020 (4,414 units). Sales of the latest member of the Porsche model range are therefore on a par with those of the sports car icon, the 911.

That’s great to hear! Actually makes me happy for once that the production delays have pushed my order to MY22.

Something doesn't quite add up though. "Won't be homologated separately, so there won't be new range values" but then implying that all that makes a huge difference...

Meanwhile companies update the WLTP and EPA values for small changes all the time.
They updated the Taycan from 2020 to 2021. Audi updated the Etron twice. Tesla updates theirs every couple of months... So did Jaguar. It's not a huge deal AFAICT.

IMHO there's a good chance the real world impact of all those changes is less than 10 miles of range. We'll see what it actually is when the first folks report in, and I'd be happy to be proven wrong. But if this moved the Taycan 4s from 227 to say 250 miles (EPA)- why wouldn't they go through the extra effort?

Looks like some new hardware for self parking and maybe improvement to thermal management, though I noticed better battery heating after the most recent software update as well when going to a charger with my 2020 Taycan 4S.

2022 Porsche Taycan Gets Flashy New Colors And Faster Charging

The Taycan can now park itself, and it has Android Auto.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo arrive with tech upgrades and new, old-school color options to keep the EVs fresh. They'll begin arriving in American dealers near the end of the year.

The 2022 Taycan has an electric powertrain with better thermal management and charging. This includes the Turbo Charging Planner that heats the battery to shorten charge times by allowing for earlier fast charging and doing it at a higher charge level. The company doesn't say how much quicker the Taycan can charge, though. Also, the vehicle can harvest excess heat from electrical components for better battery temperature regulation.

If you're looking for a pop of color, there are the new, optional Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus palettes. Paint to Sample offers 65 colors, including vintage-inspired shades like Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar (pictured above), Riviera Blue and Viola Metallic. Opting for Paint to Sample Plus lets a customer any shade that a person can possibly imagine.

The Taycan now has the option of Remote Park Assist. The system lets the car pull into a parking space or exit out of one without a driver behind the wheel. It can even handle parallel parking. Owners can activate the feature from inside the car, get out, and let the system take control. Or, a person can do it all from a smartphone.

An odd improvement for the EVs is that the infotainment system now supports Android Auto. It's not the wireless version of the tech, so owners need to plug their smartphone into the USB-C port. For a vehicle that can easily cost in the six figures, it was surprising this functionality wasn't already available.

Porsche also updates the Voice Pilot voice assistant to have a better understanding of instructions. Plus, the satellite navigation system makes quicker calculations and has redesigned graphics that make the display easier to understand, according to the company.

Plus, a bunch of new color choices — Rubystar, anyone?

https://www.autoblog.com/2021/08/24/2022-porsche-taycan-updates/

Porsche announced late Tuesday that its Taycan electric sedan is getting a couple of quality-of-life improvements, some minor under-"hood" tweaks, and a collection of new paint finish options for the 2022 model year.

The headliner here (which should tell you quite a bit) is the addition of Android Auto compatibility for the Taycan's infotainment center. Previously, only Apple CarPlay was supported. The only other significant feature update is the addition of remote park assist as an optional add-on.

Porsche says the Taycan's battery fast-charge conditioning program has been updated to both reduce charge times and improve the pack's thermal stability and overall efficiency.

"With the Turbo Charging Planner, the high-voltage battery can now be heated to a slightly higher temperature than before," Porsche's announcement said. "This means that fast charging is possible earlier and at a higher charge level, further reducing the time it takes to charge. In addition, the excess heat from the electrical components is used to an even greater extent for battery temperature regulation."

Rounding out the updates is the addition of Paint to Sample options to the Taycan's paint finish choices. Paint to Sample is a Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur option that currently includes a portfolio of 65 colors from Porsche's history, including Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar (pictured), Riviera Blue and Viola Metallic.

Paint to Sample Plus is also available, and is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, allowing customers to match their exterior finishes to just about anything – for a price, of course. Paint to Sample will run you $11,430; opting for Plus doubles that to $22,860.

My build start date is currently 27th August with a build completion of 3rd September. Will I miss these updates? Or could Porsche have started from when the factory re-opened on the 23rd of August….I’m hoping they may have implemented a week or 2 before the announcement?

the intro of a better battery, improved software and features affirms my choice to lease the car. in 3 years my taycan might be functionally obsolete, losing value.
while there is some logic to this, and this was HIGHLY advisable in the early days, the rate of change has slowed a great deal. Yes there are minor tweaks but honestly I would guess small temperature changes or under inflated tires may have more impact.

not sure leasing unless you get a great deal makes sense anymore. I think the big changes will now be gradual, so nothing dramatic for 5+ years.

just my opinion from cycling through many EVs.

Well faster charging is vague, I think it would have been more specific if “faster” meant noticeable!

Nothing reads like they are actually making any battery changes. I think it’s likely just a software update of the electronic control of the motors / thermal management.

I watched a video of the self-parking feature of the Merc EQS (sad I know). Apart from the impressive and visually obvious rear steering (Porsche, please note) the chap doing the demo looked daft standing outside of the car pointing his mobile in a phaser like fashion at the car whilst it parked itself - it would be so much quicker if he just did it himself. I bet he wouldn't be standing there if it was raining!

Pointless tech IMHO - clever, but pointless.

More colours ... at what price ... scarily expensive to choose a colour Porsche may / may not let you have. Cheaper to wrap!

Some of the safety tech should be thrown in for 'free' plus a couple of new standard colour choices.

Ideal if PCM 6.0 comes to non MY22 cars via software updates but not clear if this is the plan or even possible.

Still its all progress!

The next wave of substantial battery changes will likely only come when the Rimac knowledge gets used by Porsche.

We're getting off-topic here but I'm very bullish on their partnership with CustomCells. Optimised battery packs for performance vehicles is going to be critical, and I'm very happy they are making this investment.

CustomCells is also going to be the main provider of cells to eVTOL company Lilium which will require high-density cells too.

If your build is a MY22, no. MY22 Taycans start being built on 09/03.
