I'm on the wait list for the new Taycan and based on some construction, need to run power to my garage for charging in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately this is the time and I don't have the charging specs. I'll need approximately 180mi or range daily and will have on average 10-11hrs charge time each night. I cannot charge at work.

I've been working with my electrician and have a few ideas, but don't know if they are sound or not.

1. Run 2 100amp lines 2 or 3 awg to the garage on separate 100Amp circuits which will allow for full charging and future proofing for 2 EVs.
2. Wait to hook up a charger until the car comes out and I know which are the best for the vehicle.
3. Setup an indoor and outdoor charging station as sometimes I'll park indoors and sometimes outside.

What am I missing?
What would you recommend?
If the modern cars can only take 19.2Kwh is this overkill?
Can I connect a #2 or #3 wire into a charger?
What type of outlet will I need or is this direct connect?

Thanks,

Eric

When I went to the Porsche Experience center in LA a couple months ago for the Taycan promotion, there were several charging questions, I got the impression that many issues were still not resolved. Various contracts for charging stations had not been signed. I would have to think the resolution may a real bearing on the charging procedures? So that unless you can get in touch with someone in the Taycan who is pretty high up the food chain you are best off waiting to see exactly what is decided.

Hi Eric

I am in the middle of the construction of my new home and I decided to switch to EV after I started the construction. Furthermore my parking will be ~70 meters away from my home and I foresee to have afterward a second EV.

My assumption is Porsche will have a 22 kW trafo (three phase) built in the Taycan so I can use AC current with a connector type 2 without the need for a DC charger.

So my planning is so far:

1) I'll install a power line to my parking with the maximal power available (I'm limited to 40A three phase). It means to have a cable 5x10 mm2 to have the maximum power available : 24 kW (400V three phase)

2) I'll have also a second cable duct for communication with the wallbox (Ethernet or Modbus or RS485), because wifi is too distant and to do load balancing/management I need to have a wired connection.

3) for the wallbox I don't think I'll use the Porsche, hereafter a list of interesting wallbox I found for my purpose:

https://alfen.com/en/alfen-product-range/eve-double-pro-line

https://circontrol.com/intelligent-charging-solutions/wallbox-series/

I'll think I'll go for the model "EVA connected" from chargestorm. It seems to me to be the best quality/design/price value.

4) I'll integrate my wallbox in my home automation to avoid overloading the main fuse and to take the best of my photovoltaic installation.:whew:

Hi Tim!

Chargestorm wallboxes look nice ... correct ... but it seems the wallbox has no own cable installed ... that means you have to plug the cable at both sides (car + wallbox) at each charging ... I guess this is too complicate resp. too much work ... isn't it?

They also have versions with fixed cable;)

... really? ... on their website there are only 3 models listed : EVA Start - Protected and Connected ... none of them is with fixed cable.

Can you provide a link -please?

Edit: Found it on their "Product sheet" : 910-00048 EVA-Connected - three-phase 32A, coiled cable - Type 2

Thx ... I guess this is exact the wallbox I was looking for :)

Edit 2 : ... now found a picture of the fixed cable ... uhhh ... the design is losing now ... not convinced anymore ... between wallbox and car is a path ... cable should be down during charging ....

... what a pity!

Yes the webasto wall box seems nice and simple. Also similar in price to the Tesla wall box that is good. And the new version is connected that’s even better. :)

I agree the EVA design is ruined with the fixed cable. The webasto look very interesting.

If you want to go for a neat design I think the G5 from ETREL look really nice in both version, altough quite more expansive (I found a price aroud 1'750 €)

Wow.....I have a lot to learn....and I think that my initial questions will display the extent of my ignorance  .

A few things that I have 'heard', from a related industry........that conventional 120V house wire charging will take 'forever'......that 220V (along w/ owner expense to wire that to your garage) is better. Yes?

Also.......I know all batteries are different, however.....some EV owners claim that charging before significant depletion affects long-term battery life.....i.e. the person that does not spring for the 220V (quicker charging on significant depletion) and just plans to plug the car in to 120V every night after the 20 mile daily run to work & back (almost like a trickle charger) will experience poor battery life. Yes/no?

Thanks in advance for trying to educate me :) .

There are dozens of sites with information on charging at home and on the road. I will use the set up at home that is NOT permanently attached to a wall, rather a unit that plugs into a 220v/40amp wall plug. That way I can take the small unit with me on the road with adapter in case I need to plug into the standard 220v plugs found at all RV parks around the US. With another adapter one can also plug into a standard 220v outlet used with most electric clothes dryers in the U.S. Most clothes dryers in the U.S. are on 30 amp breakers so in this situation you have to tell the car to only pull 24 amps max so it does not throw the breaker. Remember that the Porsche chargers are able to talk to your Taycan and do certain tasks for you prior to driving. I put the Porsche charger on the wall to the right of my taycan so I can use the 50 amp charge point I had my electrician install. No sweat
