Has anyone tried to apply sound deadening material to the wheel wells on the taycan?

Most of the noise, beside rattles, on the taycan is road noise. So some deadening material might have a bigger impact than on ICE cars.
Example of materials:

https://resonixsoundsolutions.com/products/resonix-cld-squares-sound-deadening-material

It can of course be applied to doors, which I know some have done. But I don't think that would make much difference.

It's not exactly cheap, but I am thinking of pulling the trigger on it. Has anyone done similar / tested?

Sound treatment inside the doors makes a substantial improvement on road noise. If you've looked inside your doors (https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/t...on-should-you-get-it.31058/page-3#post-479314), it's almost a drum. Performing to all 4 doors is worth the effort.

On the topic of wheel wheel sound treatment- I would not add any mass to the removable wheel liners; the clips may not sufficiently support the added weight in the long term. While it may block some noise when applied that way, butyl/CLD tiles are effective sound deadeners only if adhered to the metal side of the fender (not the removable liner). I have used CLD & foam (unnecessary) to my old Model Y (attached photos) and heard an immediate improvement. Road noise at 20 mph silenced, at 60 mph it was at similar level as ~40 mph pre-treatment. For the Taycan, when I have downtime this year I will apply this product that is sitting in my garage, to the metal wheel wells., maybe 2-3 coats with a paint brush/roller: https://www.secondskinaudio.com/sound-deadening/spectrum-liquid

I don’t know about the wheel wells, but having previously taken off the door cards for rattles I can verify the doors have poor sound insulation. I already bought the resonix solution for all 4 doors, they are in my garage right now. I’m on vacation, but will report back after I install them.

Nice, eagerly waiting.

I am curretly looking for a european equivalent solution, since i'm not going to pay hundreds in import fees 😅.

Will try to get it done once it's warmer and less rainy.

Since both of your report about the doors being shit by default, i'll probably do those first, since i can do them in my parking, unlike the wheel wells.

Tsingtao had a post a year or two ago detailing how he did wheel deadening complete with pIctures. Can probably be found with search.

Yes, multi layered sound insulation front and back. Made a massive difference and this is how it should have been sounding from the factory. Many car audio installers around here are offering these and more covering solutions as well.

Shop that I used replaced the fender liner attachment points with rivnuts and therefore were able to add mass to them as well.

How much of the resonix CLD squares you think I'd need for the wheel wells?[/QUOTE]

@mystermykee I have never tried Resonix products. I have used Noico products (from Amazon) in the past on my Tesla but using Second Skin Audio products exclusively on my Taycan- more expensive but superior (ex. MLV is made of new virgin rubber, made in USA), less chemical off-gassing and easier to install.

As for the wheel wells, like I mentioned in my post above, I will use the Spectrum product for this instead of the CLD tiles. I used CLD tiles for the doors.

I was able to do 3 of the 4 doors this weekend; I didn’t do the drivers’ side because I don’t have enough Resonix Guardian left. But there is already a significant improvement in road noise, enough where I may not touch the wheel wells.

It took a few hours per door.
  • Resonix Butyl Rope to decouple and dampen wherever plastic meets plastic/metal
  • Resonix CLD (MLV similar to Fatmat) on the flat part of the door cards and inside the door panels to dampen/reduce vibrations
  • Resonix Guardian (multiple layers of foam) inside the door panels for sound insulation
  • Resonix CCF Strips to isolate speaker sound against the door cards
  • Resonix Fibermat 1/2” on top of the door cards for further sound insulation
I got the kit with Guardian for the front doors (stage 3) for $750, and just MLV and Fibermat for the rears (stage 2) for $360.

A couple install tips:
  • Use the wax paper to create templates.
  • Use as large MLV as possible; small pieces of MLV aren’t as effective.
  • Don’t cover any screws, wires, or speaker backs.
  • Avoid using Guardian near the diagonal steel bar that the window arm goes up and down on. I also had to remove some Guardian that was rubbing against the window when moving it up and down.
  • Expect to have some back and leg pain afterwards due to contorting your body to work inside the door panels.
I had my wife drive on the highway while I listened in the passenger and rear seats, and I am more than satisfied.

Here are 3 pics of one my rear door cards: 1 of the wax templates, 1 after CLD application, and 1 after Fibermat.

I have done full-blown sound deadening everywhere, including the wheel wells. For the wells, I removed the liners and applied Resonix CLD inside the fenders (basically wherever I could reach). I then applied 3M Thinsulate to the inside of the liners. Even with 21 inch GoodYear's (which I don't think are the quietest tires in the world) the results were fantastic. I also hit all the door panels with a combination of Resonix CLD, 3M Thinsulate and some Resonix ribbon here and there to eliminate a few rattles that were driving me nuts. Not only does the door panel treatment block exterior noise, it also improves the Bose sound system. Finally for good measure, I removed the two fiber belly pans (fore and aft of the battery) and threw down a layer of 3M Thinsulate. I can't say that the belly pan treatment made much of a difference, but I had extra Thinsulate sitting in the garage and it was psychologically satisfying. Word to the wise: when doing the wheel wells, take lots of pics of all the different fasteners and where they go. Also, try to convince a buddy to lend a hand as it is a real pain to re-install Thinsulate-clad wheel liners with only one set of hands.
