Hi,

I am in California and planning to get a 2020 Taycan Turbo CPO. I have a question regarding software updates.

Will earlier model years like the 2020 Taycan continue to receive the latest software updates from Porsche, or are updates limited to certain versions for older models? In other words, will a 2020 Taycan be able to receive the same software updates available on newer models like 2024, 2025 etc? or will it eventually stop receiving updates beyond a certain version? And is the update will be pushing remotely or i have to bring into dealer to update it (Free of charge or fees). I have an earlier 2023 version of BMW i4 and continue getting software update over air. Only thing i would need to bring into the shop was if there is a recall.

Also, are there any major software updates that can improve the vehicle’s driving range? I noticed that the 2021 Taycan show a slightly longer range than the 2020 and the 2023 apeears to have another increase in range. I’m wondering if the hardware is essentially the same and the improvement comes from software update, or if those range increases are due to hardware changes in the newer model yerar?

Cheers!

No. Porsche refuses to update software to their cars.
Their go to phrase about software updates is: "just buy a new car".

The difference in range you mention are due to how people drive their car :) Drive harder = higher consumption.

All Cars get software updates.

2020 was part of a major software update that went from mono Interface to color interface.
2020 was part of an update related to Range where the front motor can be fully disengaged.

However, the updates are not something that you would consider constant and continuously improving and adding features. They are only related to safety, recent battery monitoring update related to ARB6/ARB7, and usually it is once a year. This does not include separate Map updates. I am pretty happy every time I see any kind of update.

2020 is not something that I would recommend and look for newer as this was a launch model and now aged in general including the battery. To me, when the battery warranty expires (8 years or 100k miles) the car is worth zero, since battery replacement, if needed, cost $45k used and almost double that if replaced with new, but if modules need to be replaced that would be cheaper.

Not true. A used battery can be had for 8k; and a new one is 20k.
I have asked porsche.
Good to know. I would ask OP to quote this with the local dealer.
The biggest cost that will always be going up is labor, but parts like cells and batteries should decline in cost. Now, J1.1 batteries no longer available, so J1.2 batteries are the replacement part, and I assume that would apply to individual cells as it appears they can be mixed, but not for sure.

Thanks and that's the reason I am adding two more years of CPO. CPO + 2 so i will have the battery cover until 2030.

I am quoting a real case from a year ago done by my dealer for the owner that I met. The insurance paid for it but there was a lot of back and forth on the cost, so $45k was the cost to replace the battery with a used one.

Let me pause you on this one. There is a big misconception. CPO does not cover the battery.
The battery is only covered by a factory warranty for 8 years or 100k miles (or if SoH drops below 70%) regardless of coverage you have and regardless if modules or entire battery has been replaced, the clock starts at delivery. I do not believe we have a precedent for anyone on the forum who was able to have their battery covered by insurance policy beyond that battery warranty. The battery is considered the most resilient part of the car -- in theory -- and should outlive the car if it has all good modules, but as we all know that has not been the case.

Things to know:

Updates OTA are few and far between for this MY and typically are noe limited to PCM (NAV) updates

Any available updates will be applied by the dealer either as part of servicing, recall or campaign work.

Any OTA update will require an active Porsche Connect subscription.

Range - not a chance! The only option is to source a J1.2 which is better but not spectacular.

Efficiencies came via updated motor hardware across the MYs which you won't be able to get but any software based enhancements will already be applied if buying CPO.

Thanks. In that case I would make sure the dealer will update to J 1.2 if it is the latest and greatest for this MY.

"The Porsche Approved Warranty covers technical defects in all parts of the following components: engine | fuel and cooling system | drivetrain and transmission | suspension and steering | braking system | heating and air conditioning | electrical system | bodywork | xenon and LED lights | high-voltage battery."
https://www.porsche.com/internation...eservice/vehicleinformation/approvedwarranty/

8y warranty is for the capacity, but extended warranty does cover battery defects.

if you are looking at a 2020, it’s a j1.1 and will not receive j1.2 software.

J1.2 is a Taycan facelift model (2024+) and not software.

The battery has a jump in capacity (97kWh usable compared to 83.7 kWh) hence the extra range - at 3 mi / kw efficiency (summer) that gives around 42 extra miles.

Make sure you have the Performance Battery Plus and not Performance Battery as this will provide the most range for a given model.

Excellent point.

My view is that the battery will easily keep its capacity above 70%, but the only way it fails if there are battery module or other battery components that fail such as the cooling system.

Also, who is going to sort all this out when a used Taycan reaches that 8yr/100k that even now the used examples at my dealer are impacted since the dealer cannot tell what is the battery health (SoH) as they do not want to spend time/labor for the all day procedure to get the reading. Then buyers are not comfortable buying them even they are not old and CPO. Macan EV now added SoH tab with a trend graph I understand.
