I remember reading somewhere on the forum that an independent EV shop in Thailand successfully installed a lead acid 12 volt battery (which should cost around $100) in place of the lifepo battery. Same as in an ICE car. But I guess some coding would be needed through the PIWIS system (maybe?). If he is reading us here he is welcome to give some clues.

I don't think it's just a "battery", i.e. a simple cell with a plastic housing. It includes its own BMS etc. therefore, I highly doubt there is a "simple" aftermarket solution like the one you have in mind. I do believe though that the following two solutions would be possible:

1. install another type of 12 volt (like lead acid entirely), as long as someone figures out/has figured out how to register the new battery type through the PIWIS;
2. have your old battery repaired, in the sense that someone successfully replaces just the lifepo cell inside it and logs in the software of the battery's BMS (not the car's BMS) and "registers" the brand new cell inside it.

I know option 1. is feasible (read on the forum and makes sense to me), I can understand that option 2. might be doable, but whether it makes sense financially is another matter.

I get this:
Short: You can replace the 12 V LiFePO4 with any proper 12 V LiFePO4 battery that meets the same specs, doesn’t have to be Porsche-branded.

Requirements to bulletproof the swap:

Same voltage (12 V)

Same or higher capacity (Ah)

Same or better cold cranking / discharge current

Same terminal type/size

Same physical size/fitment and mounting

Automotive BMS suited for automotive loads

Proper temperature rating

Why some recommend OEM:

Porsche battery has auto-sleep / wakeup / CAN integration tuned to car’s electronics.

Cheap LiFePO4 sometimes fails to wake car or triggers error lights.

If you pick a quality automotive LiFePO4 (Victron/Redodo/other known brand) with correct specs and do a proper reset, it’s fine.
